My little girl is 18 months old and I’m not sure when I should let her have a pillow to sleep with and a quilt instead of the little grow bags as it’s now gone freezing here. Please don’t come for me I’m a first time mum just looking for a little advice Xmas Grin

DC1 20 months, took to it brilliantly. Tokk side off cotbed at 2. DC2 I tried at the same age but kept kicking the duvet off and waking up cold. I got fed up and went back to sleeping bags. Might leave until next summer.

Sorry to hijack your thread, but this reminds me of when my now 19 year old transitioned from cot to bed. Didn't have baby sleeping bags in those days. When I first put her in in her bed at about 23 months after she climbed out of cot ,I just used the cot quilt (quite small and thin) because I Was worried she would over heat. She didn't sleep very well for the first few nights and I assumed she just wasn't used to the bed. On about the 3rd or 4 night when she awoke during night I went in to tend to her and it was then she spoke one of her first random sentences "Mummy, I need another banket (sic)". She wasn't sleeping because she was too cold!

Ilovesugar · 11/12/2020 10:55

13 months as LO was an awful sleeper and slept loads better with a duvet. Next DC still in sleeping bag and sleeps well so will probably wait till they are closer to 2

Ilovesugar · 11/12/2020 10:56

I did have to put two toddler duvets together as they are only 4 tog and no way it’s warm enough in the winter

HitthatroadJack · 11/12/2020 11:01

Around 2 when moved to single beds.

I would have preferred to stick with sleeping bags, it's a pain when they wake up at 5 or 6 because they are cold, but once they go in and out of their bed, it doesn't work.

Sleeping bags wouldn't work with potty training either for me.

Once they are old enough to have soft toys in their beds, they are also old enough for a pillow, you can see when they prefer them and use a teddy if that's all they have.

Astraturf · 11/12/2020 11:05

Mine had a toddler duvet and a very flat pillow from 2.5 as it was warm weather so didn't matter if she kicked the duvet off.

Theotherrudolph · 11/12/2020 11:09

18/20 months when they started launching out the cot and had to move to a toddler bed.

Subordinateclause · 11/12/2020 11:11

Mine is still in a sleeping bag (and cot) at 2.5. Her sleeping bag is very thick and warm and goes up to 36 months. Helps she's quite short! It's easy to wash so less faff than a duvet I think. Re potty training above, she's is potty trained in the day but still wears a nappy at night so not an issue - I don't know any 2 year olds who are potty trained at night though so not sure if I'm missing the relevance of this!

harper30 · 11/12/2020 11:12

We only did it a month or two ago, and DD is nearly 2.5.
And all I do all night is worry about her being cold from kicking off the duvet 😂
If she wasn't such a gigantic child I'd have kept her in the grobags I think, but she outgrew the 18-36 month ones and I didn't want to buy a load more of the bigger ones as they're expensive.
So duvet and pillow it was, I don't think she was fussed either way

welshladywhois40 · 11/12/2020 11:12

We stopped at 2 and 3 months. Each night was a battle to get him in it and then he would escape or just seem to uncomfortable - pulling at it etc.

We used that as a sign he was ready.

harper30 · 11/12/2020 11:12

I think there is no right answer, maybe try it and if it's a car crash, go back to what you know for a bit longer Smile

UnconsideredTrifles · 11/12/2020 12:07

18 months, right after she got out of her sleeping bag, climbed over the cot railings and face-planted on the carpet. We heard the screaming, DH went up to check on her and came down with her face covered in blood! A very scary moment, but she'd only bitten her tongue.

Straight into a bed with a toddler duvet and pillow after that!

ChocolateSantaisthebestkind · 11/12/2020 12:14

Mine stayed in Growbags until I could no longer find them to fit at a reasonable price or ease. My daughter is three but is very diddy so stayed in a GB until 2.4

Lemondropsandgumdrops · 11/12/2020 12:24

Mines two next month and is still in a cot bed with a sleep bag. She wears a long sleeve vest and long sleeve pyjamas under the bag and seems okay warmth wise. I’ve no intention to change her into a bed at the moment as she sleeps just fine in her cot, can’t escape yet, and means she can’t get up to trouble in her room if she wakes up before me!

As far as I know they shouldn’t have a duvet until they’re out of a cot and into a bed, I think lullaby trust maybe did a thing about how bags at safer inside a cot and duvets shouldn’t be used with sides on cots.

Lazypuppy · 11/12/2020 12:26

Pillow was 12 months, duvet was about 18 months and then into toddler bed at 2yo

Yeahnahmum · 11/12/2020 12:27

Almost 3. And wish i could still stick them on those cute 3.5 tog sleeping bags!!! Haha. Just buy some warm arm warmer thingys.
There is no wrong or right age op. X

Whywouldthis · 11/12/2020 12:29

My DS has always hated gro-bags, he doesn’t like having his feet covered at all. We co-slept for ages with him so it wasn’t really an issue but when he went in his cot at about 18 months we bought him a duvet and pillow.

tyrannosaurustrip · 11/12/2020 12:30

About 20 months when she moved into a toddler bed but would have kept her in a cot if she had ever slept in one (toddler bed was transition from co-sleeping on mattress) and in sleeping bags as they're cuddly and warm if she hadn't started tantruming at being put into one.

I think sleeping bags are by far the easiest choice until you have no option, its much easier for them to accidentally kick off a duvet and get cold without realising.

NotAnotherPain · 11/12/2020 15:26

I also don’t want to use a toddler bed at all

Subordinateclause
my kids got potty trained at very various age, each child is different, but I didn't really made a difference between day and night - when they are ready, they are ready.

SnackSizeRaisin · 11/12/2020 15:46

I don't think there's much point in a toddler bed except if your cotbed converts to one. I guess they are lower than a normal bed so it doesn't matter as much if they fall out. But you could use a rail. Otherwise it's an unnecessary item that will only last 2 years and needs different sheets, duvet, mattress etc.

LemonBreeland · 11/12/2020 15:50

Mine all went into a bed aged 2, and two of them went to duvet and pillow. One kept his sleeping bag until 3 as he liked it. My youngest is now 9 and her head is rarely on the pillow.

Subordinateclause · 11/12/2020 16:56

Surely when most people are saying cot bed, they just mean taking the sides off their cots not buying some special toddler bed - I'd think most cots convert to cot beds.

GlomOfNit · 11/12/2020 17:00

Some time between 2 and 3 with the second one (or maybe even later??). I was buying the grobags that were good up to 18m and possibly older. He was still in his large cot because a) he is autistic and enjoyed the pressure of lying against the bars, and b) he is autistic and an escape artist and it slowed him down a little! Grin in fact I think he stayed in his cot for a while after we gave him a little duvet - he was really hard to shift out of there!

You can now get grobags that go up to age 10, aimed mostly at kids with sensory issues.

minnie465 · 11/12/2020 17:03

DS will be 3 at start of April. Still in sleeping bag. We tried a duvet but he cries looking back in to the bag.
Can get big grobags. Not sure what size up to. Don't understand ppl saying their child was too big/long for one. DS is tall
