Ok so I'm a self-confessed geek who loves watching the History Channel, Discovery, Sci Fi Channel etc. I often see people in the documentaries I watch with titles popping up on the screen like 'Shipwreck Expert,' 'Loch Ness Monster Specialist,' 'Alien Expert,' 'Mary Celeste Historian' and so on. I often wonder how these people actually get to be specialists, experts, historians. Are they titles they've attached to themselves by being an invested hobbyist or are they actually paid in these roles? I'm always wondering about this.
