I know there is a lot of Nigella haters here, but I love her playfulness.

Will you be referring to yours as a micro-Wav-eh from now on? Will it take off? 😂

OP posts:
DahliaMacNamara · 10/12/2020 18:30

I take Amlodipine for high blood pressure, and every time I take it I sing 'Amloddipeenah, I'm 'avin' Amloddipeenah', to the tune of Guantanamera.

PamsterWheel · 10/12/2020 18:36

It was fairly obvious she was pronouncing it this way on purpose. Why can't people use their brains instead of launching into a knee jerked barrage of abuse?

And yes! Most families have similar.
We say Maaay-oooooh- naaaaaise because of the way it's said in An Officer and a Gentlemen.

SlopesOff · 10/12/2020 18:36

A bit of milk?
But it is liquid she is using, not powdered.

ScribblingPixie · 10/12/2020 18:44

"Has anyone been brave enough to try one of her recipes yet?"

We did the anchovy, chard and chilli pasta - it was really good.

UghNotThisAgain36 · 10/12/2020 18:44

I love Nigella. Her weird and wonderful pronounciations just make her more endearing. I use a lot of her recipes especially the rocky road.

However, I refer to the microwave as 'tucker fucker' a la Nat of 'Nats What I Reckon'.

NancyPickford · 10/12/2020 19:33

My MIL for some reason had only read the words 'mange tout' but never heard it said aloud. So we were offered 'mahnjy towt' at dinner. I said nothing but DH guffawed and corrected her, she was a bit embarrassed and then thankful he'd told her before she said it in company (to be more exact, in front of her snobby SIL who would have pounced on her and then brought it up til the end of time.)

SilverOtter · 10/12/2020 19:40

@CaveMum

DD (6) was most amused when I told her that “microwave” in Welsh is “poppity ping” so that’s what she calls it!
That's brilliant!🤣
sparklewater · 10/12/2020 19:50

@IntermittentParps No story I'm afraid, it just made us laugh one day!

I'm pretty sure that welsh for microwave is microdon (Meecro-don) . You probably could say popty microdon, which translates as microwave oven (popty being oven).

Popty ping just means 'oven that goes ping'. Sorry.

CaveMum · 10/12/2020 20:24

Awwww, @ScrambledSmegs seems like my dad (who is Welsh) has been pulling our legs 😂 I won’t tell DD though, it’s her “favourite thing ever” (direct quote)!

BatshitCrazyWoman · 10/12/2020 20:28

Quiche = quitch
Canapés = can-apes

Ibuprofen - Eye-byou-PRO-fen (the 'byou' to be pronounced like the first syllable of 'butane')

ScrambledSmegs · 10/12/2020 20:29

Grin That doesn't surprise me @CaveMum! My DDad is also welsh and told my DC the same thing. I just didn't believe him because he's a bit of a joker, so I went away and checked with Welsh-speaking colleagues!

emilybrontescorsett · 10/12/2020 20:35

I watched it and loved it.
Dh and I always say Worcses ser shire sauce after hearing it on an American TV show.

ManxiousCat · 10/12/2020 20:37

In my short house (bungalow)
Quiche is 'Kwish'
Any sort of Meecrowaveh meal is 'Chicken Ding'
Chocolate is Shockolah
Porridge is Porraaaghe

And I thought I was odd 🤣

mommydragon · 10/12/2020 20:43

@Womencanlift

She is so awful I cannot watch her at all. Although I am hoping that this is shown on Gogglebox this week as their comments on micro-wav-eh will be gold
That will be Gold... I can't wait until tomorrow's Gogglebox 🤣🤣🤣

We have renamed our kitchen the pleasure palace (when my son isn’t within hearing range, I don’t want that repeating at school!), but we don’t have a microwave so we can’t take this one on.

I love irritating people when I say sor-bet and bis-kwits.

Don't think I've ever heard anyway say 'primark' after Primani was coined...

XiCi · 10/12/2020 21:21

I’ve always pronounced it as eye-bee-profen, most people I know do too
This is hilarious. So you've been saying it completely wrong and laughing your chops off at people saying it right GrinGrin

MummBraTheEverLeaking · 10/12/2020 21:28

We've started now, and will continue on christmas day when we present DM with her requested gift of a microwave! Grin

It'll get added on to silly household talk such as dishwish (dishwasher), tumbleydry, skissors, kerneefe (knife), Teskies (tesco), Quee chee (quiche), Cham-Pag-Knee, Weeeeeene (Wine), and Whacking The Dead (Waking The Dead).

We say biskwits too @Smallgoon Smile

VienneseWhirligig · 10/12/2020 22:36

@MummBraTheEverLeaking you've just reminded me of more!

Ker-niffy (knife)
Skizz (scissors)
Sore-sarge (sausage)

Monsieur le Cashpoint - no idea where that came from but that is what a cashpoint is called now. Helipoppopter because DS couldn't say helicopter properly when he was little. Mulk instead of milk, for the same reason

sparklewater · 10/12/2020 22:47

@VienneseWhirligig We say mulk instead of milk too! Someone on telly once said 'who delivered the mulk' by mistake and it stuck. We say the full sentence if we're feeling flamboyant.

Also, instead of saying 'do you remember...' we say 'are you good at remembering?' (We have Topsy and Tim to thank for that)

Smallgoon · 10/12/2020 22:51

Bloobs for blueberries and strawbs.... Just me then!

Smallgoon · 10/12/2020 22:54

Also, the Ikea advert has totally in which it's pronounced eeekeeeyah as completely blown my mind. Makes it sound so much nicer than how I've always pronounced it. To be point that I find it soothing to call it that now
