Sharing details of how much office contributed to funeral fund?

A colleague from another office died. There was a collection for his funeral, and the person organizing the collection has just sent an email saying how much everyone contributed. I was towards the bottom and now I feel terribly ashamed.

AIBU to think you don't share how much everyone contributed?

Shock wow thats bad form! Just out of interest how much did the top person contribute and the bottom person, and what was the average?

littleharissa · 10/12/2020 13:42

Oh that's bad!

CitizenClem · 10/12/2020 13:43

Out of interest, the top was 200 GBP and the lowest was 20 GBP. I had given 30 GBP.

TheSoapyFrog · 10/12/2020 13:43

That's a really dick move. Why would anyone do that?

AlexaShutUp · 10/12/2020 13:43

That's rubbish, OP. Don't feel bad, I'm sure you gave what you could.

CitizenClem · 10/12/2020 13:43

Average was probably about 50

CupoTeap · 10/12/2020 13:44

Totally out of order

BlackCatsRule88 · 10/12/2020 13:44

Bloody hell that is bad form! Have they given a justification as to why they did that?!

LuckyNumberThirteen · 10/12/2020 13:44

This is weird.

HollowTalk · 10/12/2020 13:44

That's terrible. I think you should complain about that. They have set out to shame people.

CitizenClem · 10/12/2020 13:45

That's rubbish, OP. Don't feel bad, I'm sure you gave what you could.

Yes and no. I'm sure I could have given more without having to sell the house, but still, I'd never met the colleague, only knew them through email.

£30 sounds a generous contribution to me. But very bad form publishing the amounts.

LimaFoxtrotCharlie · 10/12/2020 13:45

Blimey those are large donations! Nobody where I work would donate more than a fiver.

Plonque · 10/12/2020 13:46

No, you shouldn't know what everyone's running total is - that's terrible!

But I can possibly see why they've itemised it, maybe to show they haven't pocketed any?
I've got to say that a couple of places I've worked I've sometimes eyed the collection person with suspicion if somethings not quite added up and, had I been braver, probably should have requested a breakdown of spending!

katy1213 · 10/12/2020 13:47

Especially to someone you didn't even know! And surely - unless in extraordinary circumstances - colleagues collect for a wreath, not for the funeral?

SunInTheSkyYouKnowHowIFeel · 10/12/2020 13:47

If Id given £30 Id have thought I was being really generous, esp if I'd never met the person Confused

Why were people paying the funeral, usually it would be the family?

Shinyletsbebadguys · 10/12/2020 13:48

Wow that's incredibly bad form. The person who sent the email not you OP.

I am usually one for not making unnecessary fuss professionally unless its needed but on this one I would absolutely raise with HR or an appropriate person. It's really not ok. Send an email just raising that it shouldn't be done in future (obviously hopefully noone else passes to have in future ).

Aprilx · 10/12/2020 13:48

That is bizarre, you have to wonder why the person that sent the email thought it sound a good idea to do so.

Anyway I think £30 is an extremely generous contribution and I must admit, in thirty years in the workforce I have contributed to many collections, but never a funeral before.

Shock

Really bad form, but maybe they wanted to be transparent about it?

The mitigating factor is that it's a bit of an unexpected death, and it's a collection for the colleague's family rather than a wreath per so. Still shocked and feeling a little ashamed.

This, was going to ask the same OP

helloxhristmas · 10/12/2020 13:51

That's horrendous. Who shared the info?

LiJo2015 · 10/12/2020 13:51

You have nothing to be ashamed of. This was an absolute dick move on behalf of the collector. I would be emailed back informing them how utterly insensitive and unnecessary this email was.

CitizenClem · 10/12/2020 13:53

It was shared by another colleague.
