Work recording screens.

Name changed for obvious reasons.

So in the last week or so my work, a contact centre for a major telecommunications company have made some changes to our software.

Basically they now record all calls, absolutely fine with that but they now also record everything on our screens during calls.

That just feels too far. If I'm running a line test that normally takes a couple of minutes and then went to check my emails my manager would be able to see the contents of my emails. Nothing exciting in mine but I'm they're still private.

It just feels like I have a manager sitting behind me all day. Don't get me wrong, I'm a good employee and work hard but it just doesn't sit right.

Would this bother you? Does anyone else get monitored to this level?

That would definitely bother me! Can you speak to a Union about it?

chipsandpeas · 10/12/2020 13:30

we have this in our work as part of the training and monitoring and making sure we are doing the job properly
so when on a call we dont look at anything else other than the screens we need to deal with the call and not be as distracted

SewingWarriorQueen76 · 10/12/2020 13:30

They are work emails so nothing is private. Everything is accessible for FOI, so I would definitely take a look at the works social media & acceptable use of It equipment policy. You might find its tighter than you think

Ours goes as far as personal use of social media and having to point out that it is yours not works opinion. People have been disciplined for it.
I never send personal emails to work due to this.

Is the laptop or machine you're working from your own, or provided by work?

I have never been monitored like that but I am not sure it would bother me. I have never considered my work emails to be private.

daisypond · 10/12/2020 13:35

Your work emails aren’t private, though. Everything is accessible to your workplace. You don’t send private emails on your work account.

TrickorTreacle · 10/12/2020 13:36

What do they think they're playing at?

Untrusty employees will just resort to checking their personal emails, Facebook, Instagram on their phones of tablets instead.

The suits in the boardroom are stuck in the 20th century as usual.

Mrsclaus5 · 10/12/2020 13:38

Yeah I know they're not private and I don't use the computer for anything other than work. I was just thinking more of emails from HR or perhaps payslips etc. We get 10 seconds between calls so there's no let up and no chance to just quickly check something.

Send a polite and brief email to HR to raise your query. Put it in professional terms and mention your concerns about things like potentially sensitive emails from HR and payslips.

theemmadilemma · 10/12/2020 14:08

Anyone reviewing the recordings will need to be approved and considered not a security risk in terms of knowing private data. Just like your Manager will know your salary etc.

If policy states no external internet/email on work machines or during working hours then you obviously couldn't. But it sounds like you mean internal and are just concerned. Provided they do state nothing external should be done on the machines then essentially I can't see they are breaking any privacy rules or being overly intrusive.

Bit shit though.

QueenPaws · 10/12/2020 14:10

Yeah ours screen record but only during calls. So yes, emails will show if we are checking them when on a call
