Thank you 😊

I’m a bit meh about some of these, The Guest List, Silent Patient etc.

I’ve just read The Family Upstairs and found it really enjoyable.

Annasgirl · 10/12/2020 16:41

Gosh, I really disliked Blood Orange - I thought she was a totally unsympathetic character and could have cared less what happened to her.

I agree the Hunting Party was not as good as the hype, but The Mothers is very good.

Thanks to all of you for posting - there were some here I had not heard of so have downloaded two and will come back to this thread for more!!!

LajesticVantrashell · 10/12/2020 16:49

While I didn’t love the character in Blood Orange, I did really enjoy the book. Smashed it in a day!

hammeringinmyhead · 10/12/2020 16:52

I liked Should Have Known Better by A J McDine.

I wasn't keen on The Hunting Party. The main-ish beautiful snob character was awful.

I see you and I let you go both by Claire Mackintosh both had me gasping out loud at work when I read them a couple of years back. They are books I repeatedly recommend

WitchesSpelleas · 10/12/2020 16:59

Remembered another I enjoyed - The Catch by T M Logan.

Oh, yes, I second this. They were great.
tenlittlecygnets · 10/12/2020 17:01

Play Nice by JP Delaney. Or Lock me in by Kate Simants

Itstheprinciple · 10/12/2020 17:07

Anyone else think psychological thrillers are becoming increasingly more meh? I read a few good ones a few years back but, since they've increased in popularity, they seem to have become a bit formulaic and predictable like chick lit.

emma6776 · 10/12/2020 17:14

I read a lot of psychological thrillers and really enjoyed The Wynch Elm by Tana French, Haven’t they Grown? by Sophie Hannah & the Six Stories series by Matt Wesolowski (although perhaps not strictly psychological thrillers).

ZoeTurtle · 10/12/2020 17:19

emma6776 Haven't They Grown is on my wish list. Glad to hear you enjoyed it.

IntermittentParps · 10/12/2020 17:20

Tana French is great, isn't she – police procedurals but with proper characterisation and backgrounds/family issues etc.

ZoeTurtle · 10/12/2020 17:21

Itstheprinciple I think authors are now so desperate to have a twist-you-don't-see-coming that plots are becoming increasingly far fetched. There also seems to be a trend of really unlikeable characters since Girl on the Train, which doesn't do it for me (see The Hunting Party where everybody was insufferable).

Thespidersweb · 10/12/2020 17:23

Shameless place marking!

WitchesSpelleas · 10/12/2020 17:30

I normally enjoy Sophie Hannah but Haven't They Grown was a bit disappointing. I know her trademark is convoluted and unlikely backstories but she normally makes them work by having solid characters, but everything in this book - plot and characters - just seemed flimsy.

The reveals - one or two clever ones, but mostly what you'd thought of yourself but hoped you were wrong and the actual explanation would prove more intriguing.

Miamarshmallows · 10/12/2020 17:34

Sister Sister was good but I cannot remember the author name. Easy to find on Amazon though. Sister loved it as well x

WitchesSpelleas · 10/12/2020 17:38

Sister Sister is Sue Fortin and yes, it was good.

Adding some of these to my reading list!

The last one I read was The Chain by Adrian McKinty, which I got really in to and finished in two days Grin

Newbie8365 · 10/12/2020 18:45

My Lovely Wife by Samantha Downing. 10 out of 10. Highly recommend!

maresedotes · 10/12/2020 18:51

I second The Chain. A really good book.

Oh yes I liked this too!
Hearnoevilspeaknoevil · 10/12/2020 19:25

I hated Blood Orange. Didn't understand the hype. Found the hunting party unconvincing.
How about Three Hours by Rosamund Lupton? I also like a good Rebus book...
Jane Harper books are decent too

NorbertMeubles · 10/12/2020 19:25

I hated The Hunting Party. Didnt warm to any characters and couldn't have cared less what happened so gave up.

golddustwomen · 10/12/2020 19:29

Just the thread I needed heading into a new year. Thanks op!

golddustwomen · 10/12/2020 19:30

I have Follow You Home coming as a Christmas present off oh, cannot wait to read this book!
