This really irritates me, friend will ask 'oh have you seen such and such' me 'no not yet, don't tell me anything' friend 'oh it's so good, such a twist at the end you'll never guess it'

Why do people do this? Why can't they just say nothing?

Maybe they're trying to engage you with watching it as she/he found it brilliant?
It doesn't matter if you've been told that there's a twist, if you haven't seen it then you won't know what the twist is.

I had the same thing recently... knowing that there was a twist engaged me more!

sunnysidegold · 09/12/2020 22:29

I've seen this in the praise for books, like actually on the cover!
"Riveting from start to finish with an amazing twist!"

Nottherealslimshady · 09/12/2020 22:34

Surely you expect a twist? It's the whole point. If you knew what was going to happen at the end then why would you bother watching?

Not like she said "I couldn't believe it when it turned out she was still alive!"

I once got told that "the martian" turned out that he wasn't on Mars at all but in a simulator without knowing. It ruined it because it confused the fuck out of me.

MrsKingfisher · 09/12/2020 22:36

When I've said don't tell me anything then just don't tell me anything! She has form, 'oh you'll like it, I really thought he'd done it' I'm happy to engage once I've seen the bloody thing until then please say nothing!

My husband does this! Soooo annoying!!!!
I have to stop him ruining it for others! He gets so carried away!

This is my mum. When she asks that question I actually have to hold up my hand and say "stop talking". I usually take to repeat that 3 or 4 times before she will stop going "oh, but wait till you find out" or "you'll never believe which character..."

She will never change so I'm just very loud with my "stop talking".

@Nottherealslimshady

Not all stories have a twist and the main point, or even at all. Once someone tells you that there is a twist, you spend the whole movie trying to figure it out. Who is a totally dead? Who is actually alive? Who actually did this really innocuous thing which ends up being a massive deal at the end?
