To contact Subway?!

So DP and I were Christmas shopping this afternoon and decided to have a quick and easy stop off lunch at Subway..

I had a vegetarian patty with salad, DP had chicken.

Fast forward to around 45 -1hr later, and I couldn't get off the toilet. We were out in the city centre a long way from the car park we had parked in - so this was really, REALLY inconvenient. Every 10 mins or so I had to rush to the toilet..
I'm now at home.. it's been 4.5hours and I'm now cold, shivery and feeling very sick.

Silly question perhaps, but can you get food poisoning from a vegetarian item of food?! I am not a vegetarian but fancied it today..

Also, where would I stand in writing to / emailing subway? I've not been this unwell in a LONG time.
@SchrodingersImmigrant is it not? I haven’t eaten meat in so long that I imagine if I was to eat something that had been contaminated I would get sick
Not really. If it was a an actual piece I've heard about it but micro contamination of meat wouldn't. I don't thing vegans and vegetarians sometimes realise the level of cross contamination with mean/animal products in everyday life.

Also, OP said she is not vegetarian so. Moot point here.

Hi Op, I have had this problem before. With subway too. I complained, and the franchise owner called me directly and gave me a rollicking I was tempted to complain to subway head again!

I have it with Nando’s too. And some other places. Any food that doesn’t sit well with me, straight away my stomach will start gurgling and feeling weird and then I can’t stop going to the toilet!

Example yesterday I went to McDonalds. I NEVER have this problem with McDonalds, however yesterday during my meal I noticed it wasn’t fresh, and tbh was too hungry to take it back. And of course, within half an hour I was on the toilet. And been feeling like crap till now.

Subway and other places usually say the 48 hour thing, but I think I know my body better. Every time I’ve had a bad meal which has set my stomach off, can really not be a result of the day before.

I was at a wedding where all the guests who had eaten the chicken were ill within 1 hour of the meal. It was indisputably food poisoning, so yes - it can strike that quickly.

This sounds like you have a sensitivity to certain food, rather than bacteria being present that has given you food poisoning every time
Pukkatea · 09/12/2020 20:48

Food poisoning can occur that quickly through direct ingestion of a bacterial toxin rather than the bacteria or virus. The offending food item would have had to have been contaminated and left sitting out for a very long time for that to happen, I doubt a Subway would be that poor at food hygiene.

@1415isgreat it sounds like you are triggering IBS symptoms.

Yeah. That's not on them tbh. Have you git checked for intolerances? Or spoke to your gp about the sensitivity? McDonald's has strict timings on how long to keep things. And the fact that you have it from so many places suggests it's your digestive and it should be looked into so you don't have to suffer this that often. It cannot be easy
GoudaGirl · 09/12/2020 21:07

Staph food poisoning (from the toxin associated with the bacteria) can start in 30mins (usually 2 hrs upwards ) Maybe the fact you hadn't eaten speeded it up. Any food handled by someone carrying it can be contaminated so could be anything.
Could also be just a reaction though to something else (I react to chick peas sometimes)
Subway are a franchise though , but would alert them and maybe food standards agency.
You can report suspected food poisoning here www.food.gov.uk/contactconsumersreport-problem/report-suspected-food-poisoning

Sorry to quote again but I agree it sounds like a food intolerance and not the fault of the shops

I can’t tolerate a lot of animal fat. If it soaks into anything bread etc I’m really ill.

The food sits at the top of my chest then comes out in about 45 mins. This is def an intolerance on my part nothing to do with the food

sproutsandparsnips · 09/12/2020 22:04

I must disagree that food poisoning cannot cause a fever - it certainly can, especially campylobacter and salmonella (although neither usually present so quickly). Could, as pp say be staph aureus or bacillus cereus.
Shivering probably means you have a fever, and a fever means you can be tested for Covid......

QuestionableMouse · 09/12/2020 22:06

What was it made of? Reminds me of how I react to Quorn.

abw94 · 09/12/2020 22:09

Report to the food standards agency they will then investigate. It's very hard to prove, I once got it off a pizza at Bella Italia and when I reported it they basically say it's near impossible to prove but we will visit the restaurant and carry out a full check which they did.

I caught campylobacter and ended up hospitalised from a subway chicken salad , I knew it was that as was the first meal after being back from holiday - me and DH had shared meals the preceding few days.
