To leave the butter out?

Was reading some article yesterday about things you didnt know about food and came across one fact that said butter is only ok to be out of the fridge for a few days before the possibiliy that it might go off etc.

I hate butter in the fridge (real butter not marg of course) as it is too hard to spread and i always leave it out on the side wrapped up so none of it is exposed, no matter the weather and depending on whether i use alot or a little sometimes it probably takes me a good month to use it all.

I've never been ill from it (as far as i know!) am i being risky keeping it out of the fridge?? It is mostly me and DD that eats it as DP uses marg and DS doesn't like butter, but i put it in mash potato and other dishes.

It's never looked or tasted dodgy, does everyone keep it in the fridge?

I cut a chunk out of the block, maybe a quarter max, and put this in the butter dish and leave out.

The rest goes back in the fridge. It's still fairly hard in the dish at the moment tbh.

Aprilx · 09/12/2020 12:40

I keep butter in a butter dish on the counter top. I have never come to harm.

Rememberallball · 09/12/2020 12:40

We always leave ours out on the side in the kitchen in an airtight butter dish (click lock type food tubs that we turn upside down and put butter on lid). Doesn’t last more than a few days but wouldn’t worry if it was as I prefer to be able to butter my bread without tearing holes in the bread!!

BringBackDoves · 09/12/2020 12:41

I keep mine in a butter dish. It’s always been fine. But maybe that’s because it doesn’t hang around long enough to go off ....bloody love butter.

timeforawine · 09/12/2020 12:42

Mine stays in the fridge through summer as our house gets hot, it stays in the door though so not the coldest part, but from maybe Sept, depending on temperatures, it stays on the side in a butter dish, never had any issues with it going bad.
Drives me mad out of the fridge as it's like a brick!

Likewise! Rock-hard butter is an abomination

Also this, i never have the whole block out
dementedpixie · 09/12/2020 12:43

Mine is out in a butter dish in the kitchen. At this time of year i still have to cut a small chunk off and microwave it for 10 seconds so it's soft enough to use

Leaving butter out for a month is very daft, why would you not just get a small butter dish and keep out a small bit for daily use?

YeahYesYup · 09/12/2020 12:48

I'm so glad im not the only one!
When my DM visits it mysteriously keeps making its way into the fridge and i dont discover it until im standing there with the knife in my hand ready to spread it on my toast and when i find it rock hard in the fridge my heart sinks.

I did notice this morning it is almost as hard as it would be in the fridge, in the summer it's perfect spreading consistency.

TurkeyTrot · 09/12/2020 12:51

I always leave it out, except for when it's over 30 degrees. Agree about the spreading (plus it doesn't cool the toast down too much)

YeahYesYup · 09/12/2020 12:51

@teateateateateamoretea I am in no way organised enough to remember to take some out daily, i dont really have the same routine of using it, could use it everyday for a week or once a week.

Although what you have said makes perfect sense!

I cut some of and put it in the butter dish and store it in the press. The rest goes back into the fridge. Real butter needs to be kept out definately.

JamesMoriarty · 09/12/2020 12:54

Yep, butter dish! I leave the whole block out so I can use it for baking and don't have to wait for it to soften.

Frannyhy · 09/12/2020 12:54

I use this.

What do you think our grandparents did, when nobody had a fridge.
If you only use a clean knife, (salted) butter lasts for months past its bb date.

The spreadable type tends not to.

EBearhug · 09/12/2020 12:56

I keep some out on a butter dish. Not dead yet. Grin

You can tell by the smell when it's gone off. I think as long as you keep it covered when it's out, then you'll be fine. If you take months to get through a pack, it makes sense only to keep part of a pack out of the fridge.

CatholicKidston · 09/12/2020 12:56

Mine sits out for a few weeks at a time. Glad to see others are wrestling with hard blocks of butter this time of year - I thought maybe my house is just abnormally cold!

mouse70 · 09/12/2020 12:56

Summer Fridge. Winter out in store cupboard. Never lasts more than 4 days as household loves butter

unmarkedbythat · 09/12/2020 12:58

I don't but only because I have memories of the butter at my nana's house in summer being just gloop and it makes me nauseous. To be fair though, I only use butter (or marge) in cooking, if I was spreading it more than occasionally to make someone else sandwiches I might well change my mind.

EBearhug · 09/12/2020 12:58

If I'm baking, I don't often have enough butter out, but 10 minutes in the microwave softens it enough to cream for a cake.

GreyBow · 09/12/2020 13:00

You can definitely smell when butter turns rancid! I wouldn't worry.

I leave it out for a few days and sometimes the organic local one I buy goes off, but rarely.

FindHungrySamurai · 09/12/2020 13:01

I keep it out but we get through a lot of butter so it’s rarely out for more than a few days.

VettiyaIruken · 09/12/2020 13:03

I keep it in a butter dish in a cupboard. It is cool enough there to avoid it turning to gloop.

GabsAlot · 09/12/2020 13:10

i keep ours in the butter dish on the side but it doesnt ake a month to get used
