What to do about the heating...

Do you leave it on 24/7 so it sits at a comfortable temperature, or, have it on at set times through out the day?

On at set times during the day and off at night. Heat level controlled by thermostat

Flavabobble · 08/12/2020 22:02

Have it set to not go below 16/17 during the day, or under 14 at night. Have it a bit higher for the times that people (me) are likely to be getting up for work/having a shower.

SuperLoudPoppingAction · 08/12/2020 22:04

There's a money saving expert page about this. From memory its usually best to turn it on when needed rather than leaving on all the time

WotWouldCJDo · 08/12/2020 22:04

I turn it on when I can’t feel my extremities feel cold.

WotWouldCJDo · 08/12/2020 22:05

Yep, I was convinced by an article on Money Saving Expert.

PegasusReturns · 08/12/2020 22:10

It’s on 4am - 11pm.

I can’t imagine having a house drop to 14°c Shock

TheSmallAssassin · 08/12/2020 22:17

When we were going out to work and school, the thermostat was set to 20° while we were all getting up and ready and then to 19° just before we were due home, dropping down to 16° during the day. Now we're working at home, I tend to advance it in the morning so it's on all day and maybe put it up to 20° in the evening. It goes off at about 11pm.

TheSmallAssassin · 08/12/2020 22:19

(I think it's better for you for the house to be colder while you sleep)

XherdanShaqiri · 08/12/2020 22:20

Exactly this here.
Izzy24 · 08/12/2020 22:22

18 during the day.

15 during the night.

On 24/7 since November.

namochangoro · 08/12/2020 22:24

Turn it down to 14 degrees at night. Doesn't actually get that low because thermostat is by the door. Tried with it off completely but I don't like the feeling of my face being really cold at night.

MadauntofA · 08/12/2020 22:28

Ours is set for morning and evening for a few hrs at 20, doesn't usually get boosted in the day unless it drops to 12!! Plenty of layers here!

DialsMavis · 08/12/2020 22:29

On a timer, comes in at 6am and stays at 19 until 9am then 17 all day, which means it had been on in day the last few days, then back up to 19 from 4.30pm-9pm then set to 14 over night, weekends it goes on at 8am until 11am then back on at 3pm. We had it set to 20 when it was on but I noted children in bare feet and t shirts and decided they were taking the piss Grin

JoeCalFuckingZaghe · 08/12/2020 22:31

It’s usually on a timer but it’s been so cold this year, or because we’re both home and notice the cold more, it’s pretty much been on all day. The house rarely gets over 18, we really need to look at better energy efficiency but I’ve lost 2 jobs this year and DP been furloughed for most of it so we’re too skint to even think about that for the foreseeable

Mischance · 08/12/2020 22:31

I only have it on in the living room and that only during the day; and for one hour in the bedroom before I go to bed. No point in heating rooms I am not in. I cope with a chilly kitchen quite happily.

GlitteryUnicornSparkles · 08/12/2020 22:39

I have mine come on at 5am ready for me getting up at 5.30ish to 7.30am when I leave the house set to about 18 degrees, off whilst the house is empty. Back on at 3pm so its getting warm for my son getting home from school until 8.30pm then off overnight, I will turn it up a degree or two and put it on for an extra hour if its really cold or I’m extra tired as that makes me feel colder. I have a super thick feather duvet so no chance of getting cold overnight in fact I still have my bedroom window on the latch as it sometimes keeps me too warm.

Money Saving Expert says that is more cost effective to only turn the heating on when its actually needed rather than keeping it on a low setting constantly.

Pootle40 · 08/12/2020 22:41

On all day controlled by thermostat....16c at night then 18c/19c during the day

numbbycocomelon · 08/12/2020 22:45

I have excellent insulation where heat doesn't leave so I only have my heating on for an hour a day since the start of Dec. I set it at 6.30am to 24.5c and by the time it's 6.30am next day, it only drops to 18.5c in 24 hours. In my previous house, I would have it on from 6.30am-8am for when we are up and getting ready for work and then I would have it on again at 6pm until 10pm from when I get back from work and before I go to sleep at 11pm. If there's extreme weather such as "beast of the east" I will definitely would have it on longer!!

bigbluebus · 08/12/2020 22:45

Ours comes on at 6.30am and goes off at 10.30pm. In between those times it is controlled by the thermostat/me. If I'm home it is set at 18. If I'm going out I turn it down to 15 and turn it up again when I return. In the evening when we are sitting it goes up to 20. Never have the heating on overnight and it doesn't take long for the house to heat up in the morning.

ChasingRainbows19 · 08/12/2020 22:46

We have best heating so I can control from my phone: it is timed and scheduled but I work shifts so it varies and partner isn’t as cold as me.

Partner working from home so heating on more this year as the office upstairs is cold. He wears a jumper etc too. It’s set to 18/19 most the day day atm as it’s been cold. (clicks on and off) If we are both home and it’s cold I boost to 20 then adjust back to 18.

It goes off to 13/14 around 9 as we like a cooler bedroom for sleep... it never goes that cold tho to click on! Around 15.5/16 overnight temp with no heat.

BackforGood · 08/12/2020 22:46

Now we'e replaced the boiler, and have a better system, thermostat, etc.

We have it to come on to 20 before we get up (is on for about 75mins) then - whilst we are working from home - it will come on during the day if it goes below 16. Then another warm spell in the evening when we sit down and down from about 10.30 so it will come on if it dips below 12.

I do have the radiaters turned down in rooms we don't use though.

Nottherealslimshady · 08/12/2020 22:51

Minimum 16 at all times. In the evening when we have tea and chill out it goes up to 21, used to be 20 but we constantly complained about being cold so I snuck it up 1. I wear thick socks and my toes are still cold!
In summer or when we're on holiday it goes down to 5. Even if we're out its 16 for the dog and so we're not miserable coming home.

WotWouldCJDo · 08/12/2020 22:51

I can’t imagine having a house drop to 14°c

Mine is currently dropping to 12 in a morning. I try to resist putting it on, but have recently had it turned to 18, but only in the room I am in.

delilahbucket · 08/12/2020 22:51

We have a Nest thermostat. It's set for 18.5 for when we get up and then up to 20 when we're at home. It goes off automatically when we're not here and then at 10:30pm. It will only come on if the house drops to 10 or under when off, but it's never done that. Even when we're away it only drops to about 12 in winter.

Cygne · 08/12/2020 22:58

We have the heating on when we're around and awake, basically. I can't sleep if the house is warm overnight. If it's only me in, I tend to have an electric heater on in whatever room I'm in.
