What to do about the heating...

Do you leave it on 24/7 so it sits at a comfortable temperature, or, have it on at set times through out the day?

We have the app and the house is zoned.
Part of the house ticks over all the time for an elderly cat.
It's put to 15 overnight and goes up to 20 5am to 7.30am. Then to 17.5 in zones required.

DH and I are WFH at the moment and we are both v hot blooded so we have it in on in the morning, warm the place up and then turn it off, and the house, despite being an old cottage, retains the heat. Neither of us like central heating so would rather stick a sweater on if we feel a bit chilly. In the evenings the wood burner goes on which heats the whole house v effectively. We have never ever slept with the heating on, we sleep with a fan on in any temperature (no I’m not having hot flushes!), we just both have an intolerance to being hot! I love the feeling of cold air when I’m under a warm duvet.

Ours is set to 20 in the mornings and evenings and 18 during the day when we’d be out at work during normal times. It’s only set to 7 at night so it never comes on.

Fluffybutter · 09/12/2020 08:08

Neither .
I just boost it for an hour or so when I feel cold

catnoir1 · 09/12/2020 08:27

In my old house I could turn on as needed but in this house it needs to be on all the time. It drops to 12 degrees.

DumplingsAndStew · 09/12/2020 08:31

I have never been able to get our thermostat to work properly, so just have the heating set to come on for a period in the morning, and a period in the evening (until the kids are in bed). If the kids are cold in between ill pop it on, but if its just me, its much more efficient to use my heated throw.

DumplingsAndStew · 09/12/2020 08:32

@Graphista

Check for timer controls on your boiler

PoppyOppy · 09/12/2020 08:32

My house is usually 12° first thing in winter.
We wear a lot of layers! I sleep better in a cool room.

Heating goes on around 8:30am and off around 9pm, by then we've got the wood burner on so the lounge is toasty (22°) as there's no point in heating rooms you're not using!

midinthenight · 09/12/2020 08:49

We turn it to not drop under 16 at night. During the day we turn it up and down manually. When we're out we turn it down to 16, once we're in it goes up to 20.

If we let it drop too much by turning it off it takes hours to heat up again. We're looking into getting a smart thermostat we can control through our phones to avoid this.

realunicorn · 09/12/2020 08:52

We have hive radiator valves on all the radiators.

Typically they are set to frost protect in the unused rooms like guest rooms and our room as we like a cold room.

Playroom is set to 18 permanently ( room that's used the most as I'm home with the youngest) and the eldests bedroom is always set to 18 as well as her room doesn't retain heat very well so if it drops to much it takes ages to warm up again. We boost both rooms as and when needed but never more then 20 and usuallly on a morning.

We alter the sitting room, dining room etc when we feel like we need to. Think they are set to about 13 typically so they rarely click on.

The system works better for us as I like it warmer and DH prefers colder so this way I can have the room I'm in the most, nice and warm whilst he uses the colder sitting room after work to cool down having been stuck in a hot office all day.

Caramel81 · 09/12/2020 08:54

We have it set to come on in the night if temp drops below 16. Otherwise it’s off all night. We turn it up manually throughout the day depending on what we’re doing. If we’re at home all day and not doing much then it’s usually set around 20. If we’re at home but being quite active then it will be on at around 18. If we’re out then it stays off.
We have an electric blanket on our bed so that usually goes on for a couple of hours when we get in.

4starbie · 09/12/2020 09:38

Don't have a thermostat boiler just goes by timer so it's set to come on at 1am for an hour, then 6am for 2 hours while everyone gets ready for school, then again about 4 for 2 hours when everyone's home. But I have a gas fire which heats my living room really well and costs penny's to run so that helps

Lovelydovey · 09/12/2020 09:44

Off at night (10pm to 6am). 20c between 6-8am and 6-10pm plus an extra hour or so boosting in the morning and afternoon as we get cold working from home.

NoddyWithAVoddy · 09/12/2020 09:45

I turn it on when I get up and off again at bedtime.

Graphista · 09/12/2020 11:25

@DumplingsAndStew the pic I posted IS the timer controls - I don't know how to program it that's what I was asking for help with

DumplingsAndStew · 09/12/2020 12:25

@Graphista

Ah ok sorry.
The model number should be on your boiler somewhere and you should be able to Google a manual

Graphista · 09/12/2020 13:42

No far as I can tell original timer was replaced at some point so the boiler model is of no use to me and just from how it looks I've not been able to find instructions for the timer
