What to do about the heating...

Do you leave it on 24/7 so it sits at a comfortable temperature, or, have it on at set times through out the day?

Prisonbreak · 08/12/2020 22:59

We put it on when cold and off when warm.
Works fine for us

HiyaMeAgain · 08/12/2020 23:05

I ask because I have it on timer to come on at 6am-8.30 then again at 3pm till 7,
I get in from work around 5 and the last few days the house hasn't been very warm, I wondered if it's taking so long to heat up from cold that it's just not getting warm?

Whats your thermostat service at?

dementedpixie · 08/12/2020 23:06

Set at*

squishedlemons · 08/12/2020 23:08

I have mine set to come on from 6-8am then from 6-8pm. Sometimes I turn it on about 430/5pm cause we have the worlds worst windows and it gets cold quickly. Check if your radiators need drained if it's feeling cold though cause that can make a big difference.

KarlKennedysDurianFruit · 08/12/2020 23:19

I leave it on but set the thermostat at 20, which means the boiler only fires and the heating only actually comes on when it's fairly chilly inside, our house tends to hold heat fairly well so today for example it was on from around 6:30 off by 9am, then didn't kick in until just after 4pm because it was above 20 the rest of the time without the radiators being on. We're WFH some of the time at the moment and even when we're not, DS is here with either one of us or grandma 4 weekdays. Pre DS when the house was empty all day I'd set it to come on at 4-10pm , we'd each get home anywhere between 6&9pm so the house was warm.

Hot water comes on for an hour at 6am for morning ablutions, 4pm so there's plenty of water for DSs bath and again at 7 for washing up and any evening baths for DH & I

ExclamationPerfume · 08/12/2020 23:30

We turn it on when we want to. I get too hot easily so wouldn't like it to come on automatically.

PontiacBandit · 08/12/2020 23:38

7-9.30am and 2.30-8.30pm set at 20.5⁰. it used to come on later in the afternoon but since WFH I'm colder earlier. I miss summer.

hansgrueber · 08/12/2020 23:46

I have mine switched on but I control it by the thermostat, it's never on overnight, that's what duvets are for, nor do I put it on in the morning because I'm moving about, I put it up to about 16 mid afternoon and turn it down to off once l light the wood burner. Most people complain the house is cold but I like it that way, it is a pretty balanced house heatwise.

dinglethedragon · 08/12/2020 23:50

off at night - on during the day at around 20. I'd rather be warm than have holidays tbh.

Kokosrieksts · 08/12/2020 23:53

Heat lover here, I am miserable if temperature drops under 20c, we keep it at 22c when home. So therefore heating is on all day if we’re home, off at night. It drops from 22 to 16 overnight.

EveryDayIsADuvetDay · 08/12/2020 23:56

Mine comes on for an hour or so in the morning, and from about 5pm until 10pm.
If I'm cold, it's got a button to advance to keep it on.
When it's cold outside, it's often not warm enough in the mornings - If I wake up at around 5am, I'll flick it on then,

PickAChew · 08/12/2020 23:59

I zone it. Thermostat in this house has 4 zones. Overnight 17 (only kicks in when it's proper baltic) morning 20, daytime 18 (only kicks in when proper baltic - turn it up when we beg to differ, now the house is occupied by more than just me, through the day) late afternoon through 11:30 a comfortable unless it's blizzard 21.

Thermostat is in a sheltered North facing room. The kitchen gets warmer but most other rooms are mostly colder, so it keeps most of the house comfortable, most of the time.

PickAChew · 09/12/2020 00:01

@TheSmallAssassin

(I think it's better for you for the house to be colder while you sleep)
It's not, especially when you're older. Heart attacks tend to happen in a cold house.
bebarkered · 09/12/2020 00:19

25 degrees for 20 hours a day. I'm wondering, is there something wrong with me

Chloemol · 09/12/2020 00:36

Temp controlled by the thermostat to come on if it goes below 18 ( if icy outside) or 17(if not icy) comes on at 6.30am goes off at 10pm

Catsup · 09/12/2020 00:37

I turn it up when I'm in the house and turn it down when I'm out so it's shorter high bursts. I leave it on low for the dog when I'm at work and double up their fleece blankets during winter months.

Lineofconcepcion · 09/12/2020 00:41

An hour in the morning, an hour or 2 in the evening. Put a sweater on during the day. Both bedroom windows wide open at night irrespective of the temperature 🤔 can't stand a warm bedroom.

RoseMartha · 09/12/2020 00:48

Have it on for an hour in the morning and four hours late afternoon/ early evening. But the rads stay hot for ages after it goes off. And although set at 19-20 it doesnt always come on as already at that temp.

If very cold in the day will stick it on for extra hour. But more likely to get myself and extra layer or hot water bottle if wfh

housemdwaswrong · 09/12/2020 00:51

Central heating on 8-10am, 7-12 evening. Gas fire in living room, electric heater in kitchen. Lounge kept at 20/21, kitchen heater on as and when. Sounds very complicated written down, but it's a big old house, not a brilliant boiler, and we don't want to end up heading unused rooms. Works for us.

user1471528245 · 09/12/2020 01:08

On 24/7 it drops to 18 at night then 20 and 22 depending on the room, thermostat in every room and water underfloor heating upstairs and down , only 2 towel radiators in the bathrooms, best money I ever spent once the floor slabs warm the boiler hardly kicks in, very cheap to run

Fuckitsstillraining · 09/12/2020 01:11

Our ancient oil burner finally died after many resurrections, we cannot afford to replace it, it'll cost thousands and there are so many other things needed but we are fortunate that around 10 years ago we removed our open fire which had a back boiler and installed a stove with a boiler and the house whilst old, is relatively well insulated so I light the fire daily and it heats the water and radiators, we've a great electric rad with a thermostat and timer in the sittingroom which is the warmest room so that goes on in the morning until I light the fire. It's only hub and I, if we had children things would need to be different but for the moment this is manageable. I'd love a windfall of around €20k to do all the work needed on the house and garden so it was finished and more enjoyable rather than constantly looking at the things that need doing

earsup · 09/12/2020 01:34

On from 6 am for few hours then off all day until about 6 pm ...then it's on and off on timer until about 1 am. Cold house with big rooms. Usually have real log fire in lounge from 7 pm also..I am usually busy around house in day time so don't sit still and feel cold.

Graphista · 09/12/2020 02:02

Been wondering and worrying about this myself. Thermostat doesn't work and having it on all the time is too hot for me (I'm pre menopausal and tbh it's also a problem as it takes ages for the flat to cool down even if I turn it off myself) and frankly a waste of money too as it's just me!

But I cannot figure out how to set the timer, it's taken me weeks just to find an accurate image and I still can't find any instructions online.

Attaching a pic - if anybody can please advise re instructions or even better link me to the official ones I'd be immensely grateful as I've searched and searched!

Even the time isn't correct on the timer (and I don't mean due to seasonal clock changes it's approx 1hr 45 mins out!)

I'd really like to have it that it comes on just a couple of hours in the morning and at dusk and maybe an hour late at night (depending if I feel the need)

I turned it on recently thinking it cold enough to have on all day and after about 7 hours I was just melting! I turned it off - it honestly took about 12 hours till I felt comfortable again! It's just so stuffy in this flat!

Graphista · 09/12/2020 02:03

Forgot pic of course!
