Royal train trip across the UK. How is this good with a pandemic?

Prior to the Covid 19 pandemic I was not particularly for or against the royal family. I have been rather shocked at somethings they seem to have done throughout the pandemic including moving between (multiple) properties and even countries ( Prince Charles with positive test). Wondering what others think of the latest ongoing journey through England, Wales and Scotland.
YABU- they should travel

YANBU- traveling sets a bad example.

It pisses me off that they're allowed to travel all around whilst we're on lockdown.

But I'll get told they are working.

Kate's coats were beautiful right enough.

HugeAckmansWife · 07/12/2020 21:50

They are going to be kept miles away from anyone else, not using the loos at the Blyth services and the schools that have been visited will undoubtedly have had a much needed boost to morale. Its work, for which travel is allowed.

Changethetoner · 07/12/2020 21:52

It's work. It's what the Royals are good at - PR.

BonnieDundee · 07/12/2020 21:56

Yes its work.but its not essential work. It's an utter pisstake. The RF have had different rules to he rest of us throughout the pandemic though.Hmm

ladylunchalot · 07/12/2020 21:58

Nice to see they can travel freely while us paupers are stuck in tier 4 and have been restricted for travelling since October. No need for it....... do they know there is a pandemic?

WillSantaBeComingToTown · 07/12/2020 21:59

The reason William didn't reveal he had covid was because like his father the pissed off to his second home one diagnosed.

Realistically I don't think its a risk, I imagine they and the staff involved will be super careful.

In general I'm not very enthusiastic about performative measures around preventing transmission, I think they tend to lead people to become more anxious in the long term and it's a waste of effort that is needed elsewhere.

But it's worth asking would people feel better if they saw them also being locked down. My overall inclination is not really. The fact is that being locked down for the well off is not like it is for those who are struggling, and pretending like it is puts people off more than just acknowledging it. But being seen and being a symbol of solidarity and doing what needs to be done is part of their job. I tend to think if you are a supermarket worker you might be more moved or inspired by that than by them hiding out at home.

providentglue · 07/12/2020 22:03

They are going to be kept miles away from anyone else,

They might stay away from people but please don't forget the amount of people involved in facilitating such a trip. It's not just the 2 of them involved here. It's an absolute joke. Not remotely essential and a terrible example to the general public.

unchienandalusia · 07/12/2020 22:04

God how depressing. They absolutely are doing their job.

providentglue · 07/12/2020 22:05

@unchienandalusia

God how depressing. They absolutely are doing their job.

Really? I'm quite sure there isn't a single part of it that's essential.

AppleKatie · 07/12/2020 22:06

They can’t win though.

Stay at home- hiding playing tennis on their private courts living life of luxury.

Work- on a tour that has no doubt been carefully put together to minimise risks- bastards flaunting the fact they can travel.

providentglue · 07/12/2020 22:07

They can’t win though.

They don't need to 'win' - they just need to follow the same rules as the rest of us. As you have pointed out, it's much easier for them.

ladylunchalot · 07/12/2020 22:07

Is it strictly necessary in the midst of a pandemic? Can't say I find it even remotely helpful or inspiring just patronising the little people.
Onceuponatimethen · 07/12/2020 22:08

Annoying

Notcontent · 07/12/2020 22:08

But who will actually benefit from this?

Onceuponatimethen · 07/12/2020 22:09

Yanbu

Ragwort · 07/12/2020 22:09

A lot of people get a great deal of enjoyment from a visit from the Royals, you and I may not, but to hear the excited voices on the radio this afternoon following the visit to Batley was really quite heart warming.

oneglassandpuzzled · 07/12/2020 22:09

They’re not going on holiday!

Springcatkin · 07/12/2020 22:09

It doesn't have to be essential work to travel, just work that you cannot do from home

ladylunchalot · 07/12/2020 22:10

Exactly this - they're travelling to areas that have travel restrictions. The people that live there can't travel outwith their council area so it is a smack in the face for us living in these areas.
ItsAlwaysSunnyOnMN · 07/12/2020 22:11

Well the PR train trip has backfired

I’m pleased Nicola Sturgeon addressed this

sergeilavrov · 07/12/2020 22:17

Shouldn’t have taken place, the messaging is ridiculous. However, Kate and William can do no wrong according to most so prepare to be told they’re immune to legal and moral responsibility Hmm

I like the institution of the royal family, less keen on their fondness for pizza express and treating new entrants with disdain.

DCIHoops · 07/12/2020 22:21

Disclaimer - I think the monarchy is a complete anachronism and I want to see it go in my lifetime.

It’s not so much the travel, but the fact that so May are in desperate need/dire financial straits and the amount of money the Royals cost is just galling.

The ONLY reason they are doing this is because the vaccine has been announced and the Royals know that next year will see a return to ‘normality’. This is the first step to re-introducing the Royals more and more so when we’re all vaccinated, they can have us back where they want us- the adoring, flag waving public and divert us away from keep asking the really uncomfortable questions that they should answer.

ChestnutStuffing · 08/12/2020 03:48

Or, the other way to look at this is people are necessarily stuck in place, so the RF are coming to them because having a few people do so is quite a different thing than having everyone going everywhere.

In the past people have generally not responded well when they have disappeared when things were bad.

TwinklyLightsandBaubles · 08/12/2020 04:02

I think they mean well and are trying to carry out royal duties and show they care. But as others have said this is not essential travel at present especially as many people are living under huge restrictions and can’t travel around like this. Surely they could have continued with their zoom calls and leave the physical visits until spring/summer next year when hopefully some kind of normality resumes.
