Royal train trip across the UK. How is this good with a pandemic?

Prior to the Covid 19 pandemic I was not particularly for or against the royal family. I have been rather shocked at somethings they seem to have done throughout the pandemic including moving between (multiple) properties and even countries ( Prince Charles with positive test). Wondering what others think of the latest ongoing journey through England, Wales and Scotland.
YABU- they should travel

YANBU- traveling sets a bad example.

@EdithWeston

They moved to different locations round the country just before lockdown and then each stayed there throughout. No trips to Barnard Castle by them.

Fitting in some RL, covid secure 'thank you' tried s seems a pretty standard thing to do. I think there would be more criticism if they weren't carefully restarting engagements

Train is a very sensible and early most covid-secure choice - it's so self-contained, no facilities required for them at the places they visit.

William has covid symptoms and went to Norfolk to isolate That was why it wasn't in the press- Charles did the same and was slated.
MrsKingfisher · 08/12/2020 12:14

Mumsnet the place you come to be thoroughly miserable.

They're doing something nice, it's part of their job. Give over and find something to be happy about.

Parker231 · 08/12/2020 12:14

Why can’t they use Zoom like the rest of us. None of their ‘work’ is essential. From the news coverage I saw, there wasn’t much mask wearing or social distancing. The next thing we will hear is an outbreak of new cases, similar to when Trump did his rallies.

VinylDetective · 08/12/2020 12:15

@BonnieDundee

Yes its work.but its not essential work. It's an utter pisstake. The RF have had different rules to he rest of us throughout the pandemic though.Hmm
Travel isn’t limited to essential work. It’s for work that can’t be done from home. They’re damned if they do and damned if they don’t.
cologne4711 · 08/12/2020 12:15

I don't care if they travel round, after all William has already had covid (yes yes I know you can get it again, but given there haven't been that many documented cases worldwide I'm not going to get too excited about that).

I do mind when they start telling the rest of us to donate to food banks etc. I hate it when rich people tell less rich people what to do with their money.

And to come back to the travelling, I was part watching the Southampton-Brighton football match yesterday which had spectators. That's 2000 people milling about Brighton after the match.

Womencanlift · 08/12/2020 12:25

So many comments now and in previous threads that they did nothing but if you follow their social media (which I am sure some of you don’t going by these comments ) they did a lot of Zoom calls during lockdown - which to be fair was the only thing they could do

Sounds like they did a lot of care calls behind the scenes too as the elderly man on the news last night whose wife had dementia said Catherine called him during lockdown and that’s why they visited him yesterday. He for one felt very happy to see them

PicsInRed · 08/12/2020 12:29

They've really misread the mood of the nation.

TheTrashBagIsOursCmonTrashBag · 08/12/2020 12:31

I’m sure that they are perfectly nice people but I can honestly say that I wouldn’t be arsed with a visit from them and I don’t think they should be travelling around the country right now. Yeah ok, they’re “working” (if you can call it that...) but it’s not essential and it’s for their own benefit really- good PR. You can bet your arse if Harry and Meghan were doing this the likes of the mail and the scum would be having an attack of the vapours and there would be headlines like “selfish Meghan drags Harry round the country, spreading virus to NHS workers”. Etc.

AlecTrevelyan006 · 08/12/2020 12:32

there's plenty of 'non-essential' work going on

I had my hall and stairs plastered last week :)

C130 · 08/12/2020 12:42

This is what they call "work" is it? I wish I could get a gig like this. What a nonsense.

We haven’t banned all non essential work though! If they had done this in the first lockdown it would be a different matter.
BoggiesBonnieBelle · 08/12/2020 12:45

Mostly I'm indifferent to the royals, but this pisstake is pushing me towards republicanism.

It's just rubbing our noses in the fact that the rules apply to us, but not to them. It feels like William and Kate delivering a personal "fuck you!" to those of us stuck in one tier with family we can't see in a different tier.

VinylDetective · 08/12/2020 12:46

I don’t think they have. For everyone frothing about it, there’s at least one who’s delighted.

I know, I mentioned this earlier in the post too but people continue to repeat it. Not sure what their point is.

Srslydontgiveacrap · 08/12/2020 12:49

Sitting on a train, getting off, getting back on... hardly work is it?

This pair always get it wrong.

midnightstar66 · 08/12/2020 13:01

It might not be work you approve of but it's a large part of their job.

Divebar · 08/12/2020 13:02

I dare say lots of people have done stuff which you could argue shouldn’t be done right now -I got my hair done, went for lunch Sunday. Anyone had their nails done? Met a friend for coffee? No one here speaks for the nation so quit thinking that you represent anyone but yourself - I personally don’t care for the Royal family but lots and lots of people love them. These are unprecedented times and I dare say they want to feel useful. The whole thing would have been risk assessed and the risk managed as much as possible just like your not very essential week away at half term or night out with your mates. ( Only you probably didn’t do much of a risk assessment )

TeenyTinyDustinHoffman · 08/12/2020 13:12

I don't get why people are always so ready to defend them, saying that they're only doing their job. It's not a job. At the very most it's a role. A title, really.
William cannot be fired from being the Duke of Cambridge. The only way he qualified to be the Duke of Cambridge was by being born. If he sat at home flicking bogies at the ceiling, he would still be the Duke of Cambridge.
I accept that a lot of people like them but it's frankly embarrassing the way that people gush over them.
"Yes, I've lost my job and can't visit my mum in her care home and Ooooohhhhh look! Shiny hair! Pretty coats! Aren't they brave, aren't they stunning... Gosh, I feel so much better now."

BoggiesBonnieBelle · 08/12/2020 13:17

Divebar, I haven't been to the hairdresser since February. Neither have my husband or my son. My daughter has been once. I haven't had my nails done. I've been for lunch twice since March - and one of those times was when the alternative was hanging about in the rain while my car was MOT'd.
I've been in a friend's house once since March- we had been out for a socially distanced walk, I tripped and went into her house to clean the graze, rather than leave it till I got home.

I've had a plumber in my house twice since March, but no family or friends.

All that effort and William and Kate swan around as though there is no pandemic and it doesn't matter.

zafferana · 08/12/2020 13:20

You're a po-faced lot. This is what the RF do - they visit places and cut ribbons and keep up the nation's morale. It's like during the Blitz when the QM and King George VI went and visited people who'd been bombed. I'm no particularly royalist, but I'm glad William and Kate are getting out and doing something. They've been sitting at home on Zoom all year like the rest of us, but they should be visible and doing their bit. They won't get closer than 2m to anyone and they're travelling on their own private train, so they won't be spreading Covid around the land.

I think you misunderstand the meaning of a job if you think the criteria is the ability to be fired. Nobody’s said they’re brave. They’re simply carrying out royal duties which, whether you like it or not, does impact positively on the morale of millions of people.

MN seems to attract a disproportionate number of republicans who fail to understand they’re in a minority elsewhere.

That's your choice though - you've been able to do most of those things since early July. Most people have tried to get back a bit of normality whilst still taking precautions.

eddiemairswife · 08/12/2020 13:43

It's a wonderful opportunity for Kate to show off her collection of lovely, warm, winter coats. And also they are having a well-deserved break from the arduous job of child-rearing.
