Royal train trip across the UK. How is this good with a pandemic?

Prior to the Covid 19 pandemic I was not particularly for or against the royal family. I have been rather shocked at somethings they seem to have done throughout the pandemic including moving between (multiple) properties and even countries ( Prince Charles with positive test). Wondering what others think of the latest ongoing journey through England, Wales and Scotland.
YABU- they should travel

YANBU- traveling sets a bad example.

I was reading about it on twitter, I don't follow the royals that much but from what I gathered, its mainly to distract us from the shitstorm that is Brexit.

Either you are going to be thrilled they are visiting you, so that is what you will pay attention to, or you are fucked off they are visiting so will pay attention to that.

However, like I say this is from twitter

PirateCatQueen · 08/12/2020 04:43

Bunch of arse.

Wiredforsound · 08/12/2020 04:50

So they’re travelling round in the middle of a pandemic to ‘cheer us up a bit’? Christ on a bike. This is moronic.

TheRuleofStix · 08/12/2020 05:13

I’m a teacher. I can assure you they would not boost my morale in the slightest if they turned up to visit Hmm.

TheRuleofStix · 08/12/2020 05:14

Oh and the idea that this is their definition of “work” says it all really doesn’t it. What a mess this country is in Sad.

Shastabeast · 08/12/2020 05:21

It’s a bit weird and totally unnecessary. But their existence is unnecessary, they are probably realising most of the public realise it too. It comes off as a bit desperate and wanting to appear relevant. Royalty is irrelevant these days, the pandemic has shown this up more than usual.

I wonder if the government have any input? It takes attention away from brexshit and pisses off/shows up Nicola.

Nishky · 08/12/2020 05:50

I don’t agree that the trip was a good idea BUT I remember the royal threads in the early lockdown with absolute venom aimed at William and Kate for ‘not doing anything’ - although it was never clear what people thought they should do during a strict lockdown

So I guess they can’t win.

PoulePouletteEternellement · 08/12/2020 06:05

Every single member of staff on the train, at the stations, at each venue is being forced to take a completely unnecessary risk of catching or transmitting the virus. Every single person who turns up to whatever shindig is put on will have totally unnecessary pressure and complication added to their day. And will almost inevitably undertake some needless virus transmitting activity that would not have been undertaken without this quite fantastically inappropriate trip.

One would think they were saints coming to anoint us with healing shiny hair and shinier buttons.

OhWhatFuckeryIsThisNow · 08/12/2020 06:08

And, as pointed out on the news, royal train journeys cost a lot to roll out.

Pixxie7 · 08/12/2020 06:18

I like to know who is paying in this economically challenged time.

WhyDoYouAsk · 08/12/2020 06:19

I think the ‘Royal family’ will start to disappear from public view when the Queen dies.
I just don’t see King William and Queen Catherine being of any interest but as their 3 children grow up I’m sure the press with harass them all.
Charles wants a quiet life.
The Queen’s homes and gardens will become just historical parklands to visit.
They whole family should become self sufficient.

@BonnieDundee

Yes its work.but its not essential work. It's an utter pisstake. The RF have had different rules to he rest of us throughout the pandemic though.Hmm
Well said. To a pp this supermarket worker would like to travel to North Yorkshire that would cheer me up not seeing some overpaid aristocrat swanning around bestowing their gracious presence on me.
EdithWeston · 08/12/2020 06:43

They moved to different locations round the country just before lockdown and then each stayed there throughout. No trips to Barnard Castle by them.

Fitting in some RL, covid secure 'thank you' tried s seems a pretty standard thing to do. I think there would be more criticism if they weren't carefully restarting engagements

Train is a very sensible and early most covid-secure choice - it's so self-contained, no facilities required for them at the places they visit.

tigger1001 · 08/12/2020 06:43

An ill conceived idea which is likely to backfire on them.

Many people cannot travel into these areas and as a result have not seen family or friends for some time.

And while it is lovely that they want to thank front line workers, in the middle of a pandemic, in winter, just really isn't the time.

I suspect there will be quite a lot of bad feeling about this

ShizeItsWeegie · 08/12/2020 06:48

I think good for NS standing up for her principles. I'm no NS fan but gushing over the royal she ain't! I was shocked when I read about this. It's like what part of there's a pandemic don't they get? Completely absurd!

plinkplinkfizzer · 08/12/2020 06:51

To be honest this Train Tour has Boris' finger prints written all over this .

midnightstar66 · 08/12/2020 09:51

Yes its work.but its not essential work. It's an utter pisstake. The RF have had different rules to he rest of us throughout the pandemic though.

But there aren't any rules that state only essential work can be done. Guidelines are work from home if you can!

ssd · 08/12/2020 10:26

@ChestnutStuffing

Realistically I don't think its a risk, I imagine they and the staff involved will be super careful.

In general I'm not very enthusiastic about performative measures around preventing transmission, I think they tend to lead people to become more anxious in the long term and it's a waste of effort that is needed elsewhere.

But it's worth asking would people feel better if they saw them also being locked down. My overall inclination is not really. The fact is that being locked down for the well off is not like it is for those who are struggling, and pretending like it is puts people off more than just acknowledging it. But being seen and being a symbol of solidarity and doing what needs to be done is part of their job. I tend to think if you are a supermarket worker you might be more moved or inspired by that than by them hiding out at home.

I'm a supermarket worker who sadly isn't moved or inspired by them.
bodgeitandscarper · 08/12/2020 10:29

It just smacks of one rule for them and another for us. Why are they allowed to travel extensively while everyone else is being encouraged to stay at home? Completely wrong imo.

orangecinnamon · 08/12/2020 10:32

I'm no Royalist..but they should work if they can do we get value from them

Aroundtheroom · 08/12/2020 10:35

Can't say I find it even remotely helpful or inspiring just patronising the little people.

You do realise that not everyone shares your cynical views? Extract from DT:

Paramedic Alistair Matson, 54, who lost his father to coronavirus, said it had been “really heartening” to see them in person and that their visit “means a lot to us”.

Cleaner Ellen Reeder, 65, who was singled out for praise by the couple, said it had been “such an honour” to meet them.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 08/12/2020 10:38

They could have spent the money another way and had a bigger impact.

  1. Fund a theatre group to send out digital copies of a panto to all state schools
  1. Email all NHS staff to personally thank them for their efforts over the last year.
  1. Fund donations to the research teams who have worked on the vaccine or to other research organisations who've had to slow down other research in order to focus on covid vaccine
  1. Donated to all care homes to spend on making Christmas a little nicer for those who will not see their families.
mena51 · 08/12/2020 11:00

It amazes me that people get excited about seeing them, I don't understand how it's meant to help anyone?! To be honest, those people need to get a life.
And no, it's not sensible to be travelling about doing their 'work' right now.

orangecinnamon · 08/12/2020 12:07

@orangecinnamon

I'm no Royalist..but they should work if they can do we get value from them
Should say So we get value from them.
WillSantaBeComingToTown · 08/12/2020 12:10

Why the constant changes of coats?

Out local homeless charity is appealing for warm winter cost- used or new

How can someone be so insensitive as to change their coat several times a day?

They are not Barbie and this isnt a design up game.
