To think Hermes shouldn't recycle my Christmas presents for me?!

Checked my amazon account this morning to see that a parcel I'd been told would arrive on Wednesday had actually been delivered yesterday. I had had no note, no text, no email to say that it had.

After checking the tracking number on the Hermes website, I find the attached picture, which I'm fairly sure is the bottom of my recycling bin.

Unfortunately my bin was emptied this morning, apparently with DH's main Christmas present in the bottom.

AIBU to think that Hermes should let me make my own decisions about what I recycle?!

@liveitwell

Either that's not your recycling bin or you're trying to pull a fast one.
I'm also perplexed by this certainty, there has already been a thorough cross examination of my recycling habits and I believe enough evidence has been given to explain it!

To be honest though, I have no real way of knowing if that is my recycling bin. I rarely peer into its depths looking for defining features.

@Ferrari458 I will call you as my expert witness!

@Aroundtheworldin80moves

I can't understand the logic of putting parcels in bins. Where to put rubbish. Which will be collected by binmen.

The same thing happened to my MIL recently.

A friend had £800 worth of camera equipment left in the bin by a delivery form. My daighter lives on the second floor of a block of flats, heard to buzzer, went downstairs quickly to find the Hermes driver leaving, he gave her a mouthful of abuse but at least she got her parcel, Hermes are appalling in her part of Edinburgh.
AvengingGerbil · 07/12/2020 17:00

My parcel from John Lewis via Hermes was out for delivery between 7 and 9 on Sunday night. It wasn't delivered. The tracking still says it is with my friendly local delivery person for delivery at the same time on the same night. JL won't do anything because it's not 10 days since i made the order but I can't cancel the order because it's out for delivery. How I hate Hermes.

listsandbudgets · 07/12/2020 17:02

Hermes did this to us years ago on bin collection day = that was DSs birthday present dealt with. Luckily the seller managed to get compensation from Hermes - helped by the fact that they'd actually left a note saying the parcel was in the bin!

Our main problem at the moment is with the Royal Mail. To be fair, they don't leave stuff in the bin - they just don't seem to deliver it at all most of the time.

Seriously1996 · 07/12/2020 17:03

Why are people getting so hung up about when the recycling bin was put out .Surely the problems are it was a draft place for the parcel to be left without a note being put through the door. Hubby no longer has a main present and WhereverIGoddamnlike has the hassle of trying to get a refund

bridgetreilly · 07/12/2020 17:03

It wouldn't be empty the day before collection day unless you're hoarding your recycling in your house

I do this. I don't have enough recycling for the main bin to need to go out every two weeks. All the cardboard and paper goes in a separate bag, so it's only glass bottles and tin cans, usually. In a full size wheelie bin. Takes me months to fill up and I'm lazy about taking things out of the house until I've run out of room.

OP, that's not okay. You'll need to take it up with the company you bought from, though. Hermes won't talk to buyers, only sellers.

Marellaspirit · 07/12/2020 17:04

This happened to me. We have a recycling bag for plastics and card, and a box for tins and glass. The box doesn't fill up as quickly as the bag so we don't put it out as often. But once, the recycling guys helped themselves to the box which was beside the front door, not at the end of the garden path like the bag and tipped it into the lorry, complete with parcel that had been left in there!

lockdownalli · 07/12/2020 17:13

My Hermes delivery chap is wonderful. I get texts and he always knocks. If I am out he will leave in my unlocked porch which isn't visible from the road.

I am very fed up with Royal Mail today though. Have stayed in all day waiting for a parcel on a 48 hour guaranteed delivery and they now say it could be delivered any time up until 9pm tonight (unlikely!) but I am going to put my PJs on anyway. Angry The worst thing is it was a parcel I was really looking forward to receiving.

trevthecat · 07/12/2020 17:22

My favourite Hermes delivery was the wine glasses they chucked over the back fence. The box was clearly labelled as fragile and containing glass. Morons

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 07/12/2020 17:25

I have always found Hermes very good (but maybe it's just our local guy)? I always get emails through as soon as parcels have been delivered too (same as for Royal Mail and other delivery services). They tend to give you the option to change delivery if it doesn't suit as well.

cdtaylornats · 07/12/2020 17:29

Why do you bother the courier - this is between you and Amazon.

Email Amazon saying not delivered.

rottiemum88 · 07/12/2020 17:29

They shouldn't have left the item in the bin. However I find it hard to believe that anyone would keep two weeks worth of recycling in the house (and has the space to do so), but it's also worth putting that equivalent amount of recycling out on bin day. Either way, you've got an easy get out for your replacement of the item that was "taken with the rubbish".

DontCryForMeNextdoorNeighbour · 07/12/2020 17:46

Exact same thing happened to me a few years ago. The company I had ordered from replaced my order, I imagine they claimed compensation from the delivery company (can't remember which one it was).

AldiAisleofCrap · 07/12/2020 17:51

@ProbablyLate so as adults you make crafts out the recycling , what are you making Snowmen out of toilet rolls and egg carton Christmas trees?

wibdib · 07/12/2020 17:54

For some reason one of the Sat nav companies has flagged our address as being accessed from the road behind our back garden rather than down our drive even though its pin is in the right spot. Has led to all sorts of complications getting things delivered or picked up because even if we leave a note to say sat navs often send you to the wrong place, their systems don’t let them override it unless they are dedicated to coming the mile or more back around to the actual address. Has also caused problems with people coming to see us - some have ended up taking well over half an hour to do the 5 min drive...

Dsis has a different problem - she lives at say Yew Farm and at the other end of the village - but with the same postcode and it comes up first in the alphabetical list of addresses on a postcode - is another property - Yew Farm House. So many problems with people not realising that they are not the same place. Dsis lives on the actual farm rather than in the village house and even leaving instructions about needing to go through 2 fields (or not! - for the other occupants!) doesn’t ring alarm bells...

ProbablyLate · 07/12/2020 18:04

@AldiAisleofCrap Yep! I'm a teacher, and we both help with scouts/guides. Currently each week we meet we're trying to do a craft with items kids are likely to have access too. It's not entirely for our own enjoyment! I also use glass ramekins and jam jars to mix paint/as water jars for more grown up craft. I also use the inside of cardboard cereal boxes and things for shopping lists etc.

They left mine at my door when I wasn't in. My house opens straight onto the pavement! Luckily a neighbour saw and took it in for me!
Our recycling is collected weekly and we only have 1 bag so ours would be empty the day before collection too.

rainkeepsfallingdown · 07/12/2020 18:17
@WhereverIGoddamnLike in our defence there's only the two of us and our bins are collected every 2 weeks so it's very much a molehill rather than a mountain of recycling!

I feel bad for reporting it to Amazon because next to the picture of the parcel in my bin there's a little picture of my delivery driver telling me she likes hot chocolate and walking her dog
Yes, she likes hot chocolate and walking her dog. And putting your presents in the bin.

Bumply · 07/12/2020 18:17

I live in 2nd floor flat and keep the recycling in a bin bag in the flat until the day before collection.
My teen son takes it down and wouldn't think to check what was already in the bin.

TableCat · 07/12/2020 18:18

I request my parcels are delivered to my recycling bin. It's next to the front door, I check it everytime I come home.
It's a much safer place than leaving with my neighbours.

UndertheCedartree · 07/12/2020 18:23

I actually really dislike Hermes as they so regularly 'couldn't deliver' when I've been in all day - my front door opens on to my living room so I don't miss the knock and mysteriously there's no card from them! I remember once leaving my front door open all morning so they couldn't say I didn't answer!

myneighboursarerude · 07/12/2020 18:34

My mum had her front door opened by Hermes the other week, she’d forgotten to lock it and was greeted by a delivery driver hauling a boxed Christmas tree as my mum was coming downstairs in dressing gown. The world has gone mad.

Beautiful3 · 07/12/2020 18:48

But your bin was empty in that photo. Why did you have to empty it? Also our bins only get emptied every fortnight. Your story doesnt quite add up.

dudsville · 07/12/2020 18:50

It's a mistake, it happens. Tell Hermes, get your refund, move on.
