To think Hermes shouldn't recycle my Christmas presents for me?!

Checked my amazon account this morning to see that a parcel I'd been told would arrive on Wednesday had actually been delivered yesterday. I had had no note, no text, no email to say that it had.

After checking the tracking number on the Hermes website, I find the attached picture, which I'm fairly sure is the bottom of my recycling bin.

Unfortunately my bin was emptied this morning, apparently with DH's main Christmas present in the bottom.

AIBU to think that Hermes should let me make my own decisions about what I recycle?!

I get deliveries into bins alot. But I keep track of where all my deliveries are and never miss one,( not a dig) they should refund you, they're not meant to put them in bins and they are meant to leave a note so its totally on them. Unfortunately the driver has seen an empty bin and thought the chances of it getting emptied are slim.

I much prefer their system to royal mail who insist I go get the bloody thing myself, I should start charging them for my time. I agreed with the last woman that I'd leave a window open and she could put it through there Grin but they change a lot.

MedusasBadHairDay · 07/12/2020 14:27

My new favourite game is seeing how far the amazon delivery drivers have legged it to by the time I open the door. Given I sit right next to the door, some of them can really move Grin

robloxnoob · 07/12/2020 14:30

I ask mine to put mine in the recycling bin! I work a lot of nights so I'm normally in bed when they come. Saves the hassle of rearranging or bothering my neighbours (plus I hate small talk so it's better all round for me Grin)

LostAcre · 07/12/2020 14:31

The delivery driver may have assumed that your next bin collection date was a week or more away given that the bin was empty when the parcel was put in.

I do agree it’s a daft place to leave a parcel though, you’d have to tip the bin upside down to get the parcel out, which is awkward to say the least.

AlwaysLatte · 07/12/2020 14:32

I had Hermes deliver a parcel to me yesterday - and left it not in our porch but a nearby field! I only got it by chance as I was walking the dog and saw someone band down to pick up a parcel by the field gate just after I received a text saying it had been 'delivered'. Grrrr!

Robinelf · 07/12/2020 14:32

Hermes customer service email - I spammed this until someone got back to me re. my ‘missing’ delivery[/quote]
I just take to twitter.

Though if the parcel is from Amazon they are really good.

Dearmaria · 07/12/2020 14:33

Ah this happened to me last Christmas! My green bin was ON THE KERB for collection and my Hermes courier thought that was a good place to leave my parcel. Baffled me. Bins had been emptied by the time I got home. Argos were very helpful though and sent me a replacement item on my chosen day for delivery so there was no chance of a repeat. Hope you get it sorted!

ChessieFL · 07/12/2020 14:35

Taking pictures of the delivery on the doorstep is not helpful when you live on a new build estate and everyone’s front doors look the same! We had an email once saying a parcel had been delivered and showed a picture of what looked like our door with the parcel on the step (but only the bottom of the door so didn’t include our number). However, we hadn’t received the parcel. By looking closely at the photo we identified a small weed by the door and then had to go round looking for weeds on our neighbours’ doorsteps to see who had our parcel!

AlwaysLatte · 07/12/2020 14:36

My husband has his own name for delivery companies based on previous poor service:
DPD = Dippy Dopey
Parcelforce = Parcelfarce
Hermes = Herpes
Parcel Monkey = Parcel Sloth
Yodel = Slowdel

IwishIwasyoda · 07/12/2020 14:41

Hermes left parcels behind our bins recently. We were in and they hadn't rung the doorbell or left a card. They also delivered a parcel to NDN even though we were in at the time

ProbablyLate · 07/12/2020 14:42

I've contacted the seller on amazon so hopefully I'll be able to get it sorted. I briefly considered contacting the bin men but thought that would probably prove futile...

I feel I need to start a new thread "AIBU for letting recycling build up in a box inside the house before emptying it into the outside bin before collection?"

I hadn't realised I was so unconventional!

(It was an old photo, of a previously delivered package, in case that part isn’t clear grin)

I hate to think they keep old photos. There must be so many photos out there of me in my slippers holding a parcel. 🙈

Brighterthansunflowers · 07/12/2020 14:46

Hermes are truly shit. Their latest is they apparently can’t find a perfectly ordinary numbered house in a perfectly ordinary suburban street Hmm so have returned the parcel to sender.

I normally avoid companies who use Hermes but didn’t realise til after I’d ordered (which I suspect is intentional). I’d much rather pay more for delivery from Royal Mail who at least actually turn up and if I miss a delivery completely, the sorting office is within walking distance.

WhereverIGoddamnLike · 07/12/2020 14:47

We have an issue on our road. There are only 5 houses. It's a bendy country road. If you put any of our addresses into Google maps, they all take you to the last house. We all have clear numbers on our doorman. Royal mail, DPD and parcelforce have never got it wrong. One hermes driver is brilliant. Then we got a new Hermes driver on our route and even if he is delivering parcel for number 1, 3 and 5 he will take them all to the Google maps house and leave them all there. Apparently he cannot read numbers or realise what is going on.
I've reported it to hermes over and over. No chance.
I've reported the change to Google maps by moving the pin and correcting the addresses. The reply was "we were unable to make these changes as we coildnt verify the informtion".

It's a nightmare because the owners are so sick of it that if they're home, they refuse the parcels so hermes re-attempt delivery, which is just the driver doing the same thing for 3 days until they return to sender or until the driver is able to sneak them into the owners back garden. He has been told by her over and over but cannot get it through his thick little head that he needs to walk up to the correct numbered house.

ladycarlotta · 07/12/2020 14:49

@Emeraldshamrock

Well you've explained how an empty bin became full then emptied within 24 hours. Hmm Why keep the all recycling in doors how much caft from recycling do you need. Is it covered by insurance?
this is such a weird interrogation!

In defense of OP, we also keep our recycling in the house until collection day, unless there's a lot of it. It all fits into the bins we have in the cupboard under the sink, so we might take it out as and when, but usually not til the night we put the bins on the kerb. It's really not unusual.

WhereverIGoddamnLike · 07/12/2020 14:49

@ProbablyLate

I just cant stand clutter. Our recycling bins are emptied every 4 weeks and the idea of 4 weeks of recycling just creating a mini mountain in my house sets my teeth on edge. The kids keep what they want (usually egg cartons to make crocodiles) but the inside bins get taken out as soon as they are full.

Bluebellbike · 07/12/2020 14:51

My Amazon parcel last Friday was chucked over the side gate which is 6 ft high. It sat in the pouring rain for several hours. My neighbour who is designated as secondary delivery address said she was in at the time but the driver did not attempt delivery there.

Lightsabre · 07/12/2020 14:53

Same thing happened to me a year or so ago! I got a refund from the company who I presume then claimed off Hermes.

TrialOfStyle · 07/12/2020 14:54

Why does it matter if OPs bin was empty or not/ whether it will filled after/ how she stores her recycling. All irrelevant. I would actually be more annoying if a package was dropped into an empty bin as I’m basically need to climb inside to get it out again Envy (not envy).

ThatDamnKrampus · 07/12/2020 14:59

Our Hermes delivery guy is great (hopefully haven't jinxed it!). Yodel on the other hand...bloody awful! They launched a bag of cuttlefish over our 6ft high, back garden gate onto concrete and they were all broken up. They also last week left my uni paperwork on my front doorstep in the pouring rain (it was obvious what it was from the box) and it was opened!!

LimitIsUp · 07/12/2020 15:01

I agree that you have a very good case for a claim!

I was going to handsomely tip the delivery driver who was due to drop off a box of frozen dog food for my two dogs (two week supply) as my tracking information showed that he had 115 drops to make and we were 111th and it was already 21.00 on Saturday night. Felt sorry for him earning a pittance and working long hours under pressure.

However he didn't bother to buzz the intercom (we were very much at home) and he simple left the package on the road side of my gate where it could have been intercepted by anyone. I get that he was probably frazzled and knackered, but he has an obligation to put the package somewhere safe and attempt to get an answer from the householder. Fortunately I was checking the tracking info and discovered that it had been delivered a few minutes after he dumped it kerbside. He missed out on the tenner tip

@ItWorriesMeThisKindofThing

Hermes deliver Amazon purchases?
Yep. I'm waiting on a delivery from amazon at that's being delivered via Hermes.
ProbablyLate · 07/12/2020 15:06

@WhereverIGoddamnLike in our defence there's only the two of us and our bins are collected every 2 weeks so it's very much a molehill rather than a mountain of recycling!

I feel bad for reporting it to Amazon because next to the picture of the parcel in my bin there's a little picture of my delivery driver telling me she likes hot chocolate and walking her dog
