To be bothered by this car's registration?

flipflopping · 07/12/2020 13:39

I have my eye on a car. I like everything about it except the number plate:

FF69 XSP

(Imagine here that my name really is FlipFlopping, so the FF is my initials. Actually my name is something else but the letters are my initials, if you see what I mean, so if I were called Mary Brown it would be MB69 XSP)

I am slightly worried that people will think I have a personalised number plate with my initials followed by 69.

Please reassure me that I am worrying over nothing.

Vote YABU if you think the number plate is fine.
Vote YANBU if you think everyone will assume I've basically put my sex life on my number plate.

There a lot of car reg pedantry on this THR 34D !

Elai1978 · 07/12/2020 19:34

ORB 150N is a valid U.K. format, released in 1974.

Of course it is. That’s not the plate the PP claimed though is it?

It actually is. The poster even said which car type it was assigned to and you can check that yourself on the Gov website.

Oh really? Now show me where in the following post I can find ORB 150N or even ORB150N if you want to space it illegally?

There's an old Range Rover I see frequently with the plate ORBI5ON. Always wonder if there's an interesting story behind it.

Maybe it's not legally spaced. Maybe the poster just omitted the space in the same way they used O instead of 0.

That fact that it was legible and does indeed check to the vehicle that poster stated should be enough for you to understand.

Are you just being like this for fun?

TramaDollface · 07/12/2020 20:16

Does anybody else LOVE seeing PN15 plates?

TroysMammy · 07/12/2020 20:19

I'd have the number plate for a laugh. However I have yet to see a car with the registration CV19 and CV is the prefix for registrations in my area. I've seen CV other numbers but not CV19.

BikeRunSki · 07/12/2020 20:20

It’s obviously an allocated plate, not a private plate. I’d laugh it off as a nice coincidence if anyone notices it. I had a car with my full three initials once (old style plates), no one ever noticed. Eg: P456 BRS*

*not my actual initials

Accuracy matters. If I mixed up 0 and O at work I’d be in deep shit, attention to detail just spills over into everyday life.

I work with a father and son whose surname is Penistone. You can imagine their driving licence numbers...

I actually live very close to the town of Penistone. We’re so over the sniggers, but those driving license always raise a smile.

Accuracy matters Grin This is Mumsnet not the fucking NASA HQ. You were wrong.

Get over it.

PenelopePiper · 07/12/2020 21:07

I would not get a number plate like that. So I must also be a 14-year old boy inside.

69 on it's own = fine
69 + my initials = not fine
69 + BJ = hilarious and definitely not for me

I look at number plates - and see so many on the school run. Two of my friends have what I consider amusing number plates with rude words. And I chortle to myself everyday (sorry for being immature!).

So no OP! I would not buy this car.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 07/12/2020 21:09

I was about to say "Why what's wrong with Penistone then I took a closer look. Grin

TheBlueStocking · 07/12/2020 23:06

I'm loving the registration pedantry. I considered pointing out that registrations don't have a space in them, even though a lot of people put a space in because they're spaced on the plate.

Slightlyunhinged · 08/12/2020 01:48

I had a car with a plate ending in FOF. I teach and could never understand why my class found my car so hilarious, until one little child asked me why I had fuck off on my car!

PizzaForOne · 08/12/2020 13:30

I always find it funny to see plates ending in FAJ or VAJ tbh

Elai1978 · 08/12/2020 13:58

You were wrong.

No, I was 100% factually correct. Claiming otherwise doesn’t make it so.

Lightwater, Surrey feels the pain too - my friend Balonz's emails never get through to me.

Shoppingwithmother · 08/12/2020 18:02

I’ve seen a car near me with the registration PN15 ARZ
I notice car registrations all the time, and I do think about how old they are, where the car is from, if it’s a private reg it not, etc.
Some people notice these things and some don’t. The people who do notice are unlikely to think anything of your proposed registration as there are thousands of 69 plates out there at the moment.

SurreyMumOfOne · 09/12/2020 20:30

I can only apologise to @Elai1978 for not going out and taking a photo of ORBI5ON nor being able to remember exactly how it is spaced from the comfort of my own home.

Your failure to appreciate that, nor ability to initially accept it does exist, albeit with spacing, makes me assume your own personal plate must be 1MATWAT. You can choose where any spaces go.

DukeOfEarlGrey · 09/12/2020 20:48

I just voted and it took the YANBU total to 69% Grin
