To ask people to donate to charity when I do my walk?

Hello all! I'm not sure if Aibu is the right place for this but I need to ask for opinions.

I am going to undertake a big walking challenge in the UK next year, I asked for
advice about in online and I really didn't think anyone would care but I have been really surprised by the amount of interest this has generated and had literally hundreds of people asking me to keep them updated about my progress, suggestions of doing a blog and putting videos on YouTube etc etc. I really have no clue as to how I'd go about doing this as I'm not that social media savvy but I'll look into it a bit closer to the time 😂

Anyways, since this has attracted quite a bit of attention I'm wondering if maybe I should add the option for people who follow my progress to donate to a charity? Normally I'm a bit wary of so called 'charity challenges' because I think sometimes it's a bit of a pretence. Most people do it for them because it's a challenge they want to do, or a place they want to visit. The charity stuff is just a cherry on the cake. I don't want to seem disingenuous as I really am doing this challenge for me but maybe it would be nice to have it as an option?

A very dear friend of mine has an incurable rare bone condition and is now pretty much confined to a wheelchair and she is only in her 30s. She has mentioned several times that she loves it when I take pictures and videos of the places I visit because she is basically trapped in her flat a lot of the time and it's a nice escape for her. Wibu to try and raise some money for her condition's charity while I'm doing my challenge? Or will it look grabby?

I think that’s absolutely fine. I’d just make it clear that you are paying all costs associated with the challenge and any money donated will go straight to charity - I think these things only look ‘grabby’ when someone asks for donations and it turns out money taken from the donations pays for their flights and accommodation in Kilimanjaro or China or wherever.

Fortunately it's in the Uk and I have virtually all the equipment I need already so all the donations will be able to go to the charity 😊

Doesn’t look grabby at all, good luck with the challenge! I hope you make some money for the charity.

It's not grabby. There's a difference between asking on a dedicated youtube/SM/blog account which people can choose to follow, and messaging people from your personal account.
