Me and hubby disagreeing on parcel

Hi all

So obviously with lots of parcels being delivered not everyone is always in. We've taken a few in for neighbours however it's my view that neighbours should come and get their parcel but hubby thinks we should take it round? AIBU? I kind of think waiting for them to get back and going round is a ball ache. Surely they should just collect at their earliest convenience as they will have got a card through the door informing them where the parcel is anyway?

The delivery guys don't always leave slips so I always take the things to neighbours - but they do the same for me. At least you should text them you have their delivery.

Nottherealslimshady · 07/12/2020 08:52

People should collect. Otherwise you have to watch at the window for signs they're home. I always walk in, pick up the card and walk straight over to collect a parcel. Knowing your parcel is at someones house and not going straight over is so rude.

One2Three4Five6 · 07/12/2020 08:53

I'm in the middle on this.
My neighbours and I do both.
Sometimes my neighbour sees me arrive home from work, and pops out with the parcel before I've even seen the note. Sometimes they are not in when I have popped round to collect, but if they see our car when they get home, they drop it off.
And we do the same for them.
Neither of us seems to mind, and we do get on well with our neighbours, not sure if that makes any difference.

One2Three4Five6 · 07/12/2020 08:54

Oh, and sometimes the delivery companies do not leave cards, so I've popped round to nextdoors with a parcel and they didn't even know I had it.

saraclara · 07/12/2020 08:57

Like a pp, I take it round because I prefer not to have other people's parcels cluttering my hallway. My neighbours generally do the same for me. It's easy enough to tell when we're in, what with cars in the drive and lights on.

Having said that, if I get home and there's a card, it's clear which neighbour has it and they're in, I'll knock. If they're not, I'll wait for them to bring it round.

LaurieSchafferIsAllBitterNow · 07/12/2020 09:02

I like to take them round to be helpful, but would also want to go collect my parcels to save them the bother.

I only take parcels in for the nice neighbours....there's one who I won't entertain, and annoyingly his pizza deliveries keep chapping my door as they cannot find him...tempted to misdirect them, but I don't.

I also try to insist the couriers leave a note, but I know they sometimes say the will go back but they don't

reesewithoutaspoon · 07/12/2020 09:04

Stopped taking in now. too many people leaving them for me to deliver. I,m not fecking postman pat. Also I work nights and it was getting ridiculous the number of times delivery guys banged on the door because my car is on the drive and so woke me up when I was trying to sleep.

Mischance · 07/12/2020 09:05

Take it round - be a good neighbour - you do not have to get close tothem.

billy1966 · 07/12/2020 09:09

I wouldn't take a parcel in for someone unless I had a number for them.

I think a quick text to tell them you have taken a parcel for them is fine.

I would expect the parcel to be collected asap.

People not answering doors, and not bothering to collect parcels for days, that I read about on MN, would not be tolerated.

gingerbreadfox · 07/12/2020 09:10

I think they should collect from you. If my neighbour was kind enough to take in one of my parcels I would not want to add to the inconvenience by expecting them to leave their warm house and try to deliver it to me themselves.

We have a neighbour who signed for a lot of our parcels a few years ago and we bought him a nice bottle of wine as a thank you.

LazyName · 07/12/2020 09:12

My neighbours drop it off to us usually. Half the time we don’t know there’s even a parcel delivered for us somewhere as the delivery person didn’t leave a card. Or we find parcels for us round the side of the house. We don’t usually receive other people’s parcels but one time we got a letter that was for a house in a nearby street so I just went and posted it. Not a big deal to just be a little bit helpful, unless you hate your neighbours Smile

PawPawNoodle · 07/12/2020 09:13

I take the parcel round but that's likely because a) I like my neighbours and want them to have their parcel ASAP to enjoy and b) I don't want them calling round when I'm in the middle of watching Masterchef and disturbing me.

HitthatroadJack · 07/12/2020 09:16

It's often my neighbours bring me my parcels when no card was left, so I don't mind bringing theirs.

I also had emails hours after delivery telling me my parcel have been left "at reception", "in the shed" etc... which translated as thrown over the side gate, or hidden in the bushes Grin
so who knows what the neighbours got!

Jobsharenightmare · 07/12/2020 09:17

Taking them round that evening or the next day is the norm here because not everyone gets a card. Some cards just say left with a neighbour and not even which house.

Rae36 · 07/12/2020 09:19

50:50 I say. People on our street are generally pretty nice.

If one person repeatedly left something for days we would stop taking their parcels.

TreestumpsAndTrampolines · 07/12/2020 09:28

I do a mix - I take it in, and leave it by the door, then if they come and knock I give it to them, otherwise if I'm by the door I'll poke my head out and see if they seem to be in, and pop the parcel round if they are.

Ditto in the other direction.

But my neighbours are all easy-going, nice people.

CorianderBlues · 07/12/2020 09:29

If this is all you've got to worry and post on MN about, then go and enjoy your otherwise perfect life and stop stressing the small stuff. Smile

Waveysnail · 07/12/2020 09:30

I usually send kids round with it but we are terraced housing so not big deal

donquixotedelamancha · 07/12/2020 09:34

One of my neighbours from down the road came round with one the other day. I'd had no card about it so didn't even know it had been dropped off.

Obviously they will come when they are in but I don't see why you wouldn't drop it round if it was a convenient time for you. If it's been there a couple of days they probably don't know or have missed you- popping to them is not a big deal.

donquixotedelamancha · 07/12/2020 09:40

Meh. Sane, calm threads about petty points of etiquette make a refreshing change, like it used to be.

Velvian · 07/12/2020 09:40

It is possible they don't know you have their parcel. The leaving of cards seems to have gone out the window (no pun intended) at the moment.

Sedlescombe · 07/12/2020 09:41

I would expect neighbour to collect but if they haven’t that evening then I would take it round. My neighbours take in parcels for me and I would always go round.

Isn’t the solution simple. DH can take it round ?

HappyChristmas29 · 07/12/2020 09:43

They should come round but sometimes I would take it over especially if it’s large or in the way.

Some of the couriers in my area are known to hand to a neighbour but not let the parcel recipient know where it is!

teateateateateamoretea · 07/12/2020 09:43

How does a person manage daily life when its is such a huge issue to them to take 2 mins to walk to a nearby door and ring the bell? Doing a weekly shop must be completely beyond you.

Grooticle · 07/12/2020 09:45

A neighbour was really pissed off that we never collected our parcel - it was actually important prescription medicine and we were desperate to get it, but the delivery company just said it had been delivered to “a neighbour” - I spent ages going up and down the street bothering random people who hadn’t seen it but never happened to catch her at home. If you know whose parcel it is either take it round or let them know when they can collect it.
