Is a 25 min commute too far to travel for 3 hours work each day?

Whats people's thoughts on this? Employee is paid £15 per hour for 15 hours split over 5 days. They are happy with this I think but other employee doing the same hours is being vocal about wanting to do her hours over 4 days because of her commute. The rota and needs of the business won't really allow that. What do yous think of a 25 minute commute?

Seems like quite a long travel time to me for 3 hours work but it's up to the employee to decide. If the employer needs those shifts then the employee will need to look for a new job, it doesnt matter what anyone else thinks though does it?

flaviaritt · 06/12/2020 15:20

It’s not really the employer’s responsibility to make allowances for a commute. If the job is too far away the employee should apply elsewhere.

Waveysnail · 06/12/2020 15:20

Normal. My commute can be 15 minutes in non rush hour traffic, more like 30/40min plus in rush hour. I used to work mornings only for just over 3 hours.

Kpo58 · 06/12/2020 15:23

A 25 min commute is almost nothing. I can't see why they are complaining. Confused

lockdownalli · 06/12/2020 15:23

Totally normal. I agree with flaviaritt

JorisBonson · 06/12/2020 15:24

My commute is 3 hours a day. I would kill for a 25 minute journey.

AppleKatie · 06/12/2020 15:24

Yeah that’s not really a ‘commute’. That’s just driving to work. Not a reasonable request on those grounds.

InTheLongGrass · 06/12/2020 15:25

It sounds like there are 2 people doing this. If they can agree a schedule that covers all the hours, and gives each of them a day off, fine.
But one person changing their hours, leaving 3 hrs with double cover, and 3 hrs with no cover isnt going to work.
I'm sure you'd get your hand snapped off for those hours and pay - especially if they fitted in school hours!

BuffaloCauliflower · 06/12/2020 15:25

25 minutes is a pretty normal, acceptable journey time. It’s not an hour. That said I’d also rather do my hours over 4 days if possible but if not possible a 25 minute journey isn’t a deal breaker.

GooseberryTart · 06/12/2020 15:26

Does one do mornings and one afternoons everyday? Or would they both fancy getting together and doing more hours per day and still cover the week?
If you are considering the other persons request I wouldn’t let the person wanting to change take a Friday off as it is always the day when others want to take odd days annual leave to make a long weekend,

TheSilentStars · 06/12/2020 15:26

Nope.

BlueBottle19 · 06/12/2020 15:28

25 minutes is not really a commute. Not re ive ever had a job thats a shorter 'commute' even as a teenager it would take me 20 minutes walk.

I think its fine. If the person doesnt they need to find a new job

Waxonwaxoff0 · 06/12/2020 15:29

I used to commute for an hour each way to do 4 hours work a day. I have a 45 minute commute now and I do 6 hour days. 25 minutes is nothing.

KittenCalledBob · 06/12/2020 15:31

My commute is 35-50 mins (depending on traffic), and one day a week (normally - currently wfh due to covid) I only work a half day. So I think that's fine.

northstars · 06/12/2020 15:32

25 minutes is nothing!

Whatthebloodyell · 06/12/2020 15:33

25 minutes isn’t a long commute! I’d rather a 25 minute walk than a 25 min drive though, as a car journey can be longer and more stressful if there is traffic and also involves having the stress of finding a parking space which is tough where I live!

I’d enjoy a 25 minute walk to and from work. Saying that I would MUCH rather do those house spread over 3 or 4 days rather than 5. 15 hours spread over 5 days doesn’t sound very appealing to me.

CounsellorTroi · 06/12/2020 15:34

Normal. My inward commute could take 20-25 mins depending on traffic, homeward anything up to 45 mins.

RolandSchitt · 06/12/2020 15:35

It's nothing. How far do they expect they should travel for work, is anything over 10 minutes too long?!

SnuggyBuggy · 06/12/2020 15:35

Doesn't seem overly long to me. It's irrelevant anyway if the business needs don't work with a 4 day week.

AllGongNoDinner · 06/12/2020 15:37

Christ people don’t know they’re born these days Grin

thebakeoffwasntasgoodthisyear · 06/12/2020 15:42

It’s not a long commute. I live less than 2 miles from the city centre but it takes me at least 25 minutes to get to work, and I often do a 2-3 hour shift. I could walk I suppose, but I’m too lazy. I don’t think a commute is the employer’s responsibility.

TheSilentStars · 06/12/2020 15:44

I also agree I wouldn't even consider it a commute. It's a less than half hour car/bus/train isn't it?

sofiaaaaaa · 06/12/2020 15:45

I think that’s a good commute if anything. Get from door to door in less than half an hour? Why is that worth complaining about? I used to leave work whilst it was dark outside, and return whilst it was dark outside, most days due to a long commute!

trappedsincesundaymorn · 06/12/2020 15:46

It takes 25 minutes for me to travel to the nearest town, so I'd say no.

HelpMeh · 06/12/2020 15:48

Yeah, that's really not a commute.
