Is a 25 min commute too far to travel for 3 hours work each day?

Whats people's thoughts on this? Employee is paid £15 per hour for 15 hours split over 5 days. They are happy with this I think but other employee doing the same hours is being vocal about wanting to do her hours over 4 days because of her commute. The rota and needs of the business won't really allow that. What do yous think of a 25 minute commute?

However I do understand the argument here. If they’re paying public transport fees it’s obviously cheaper to work less days/more hours for them.

I had a part time job at uni and used to hate getting multiple 4 hour shifts per week for that reason. I’d rather work a full shift if I’m having to get ready and travel there anyway? My commute was longer though.

Burnthurst187 · 06/12/2020 15:49

Unless the location of work has changed, the employee knew the location and time it would take to get there before they took the job

If it was an issue they shouldn't have taken the job Confused

Comefromaway · 06/12/2020 15:50

I did that for years at kids drama classes.

Approx 30 mins to get there. Classes ran for 3 hours. Rate of pay was £75 for teacher, £30 for assistant.

A 25 min 'commute' [each way] is nothing!

Crakeandoryx · 06/12/2020 15:52

Is this not an average commute?

sofiaaaaaa · 06/12/2020 15:55

For clarity my travel costs would hit the oyster daily cap, which I think was £7 at the time. So a bit annoying to have to do say 5 days a week at 3 hours a day as a broke student. Luckily my management liked me and always gave me full shifts.

Chocolatechocolatechocolate · 06/12/2020 15:56

I think a 25 minute commute is reasonable

rawlikesushi · 06/12/2020 15:56

I don't blame her for asking but if the needs of the business don't allow it, then it's a perfectly acceptable commute.

LindaEllen · 06/12/2020 15:56

I think given the reasonable wage, I would be happy for that kind of 'commute'.

If you think about it, you're working for almost double what people on minimum wage would get, and many many people on much lower wages would travel further than that.

ZenNudist · 06/12/2020 15:57

No

What a muppet

Knittedfairies · 06/12/2020 15:58

She needs to find another job to cut her commute to what she considers to be acceptable; it's not the employer's responsibility.

Jenstar123 · 06/12/2020 15:59

I agree wouldn’t call 25mins a commute. If I was the employer and the an employee who has just been offered a job is already starting to make demands and complaining it would be ringing alarm bells that they are going to difficult! If the hours don’t suite they shouldn’t have applied for the job.

Audreyseyebrows · 06/12/2020 16:01

Bloody hell, 25 minutes! That’s nothing!

WhatWouldYouDoWhatWouldJesusDo · 06/12/2020 16:03

It takes my dp about 25 minutes to get across the car park and through the building to the area he needs to be in 😂😂😂

Standrewsschool · 06/12/2020 16:04

25 minutes! That’s not a commute. That’s an ordernary journey. Can take me longer to get to the local supermarket or take the kids to school!

EveryDayIsADuvetDay · 06/12/2020 16:05

25 minutes is nothing
My walk to work is 30 minutes - I've just changed my hours to work four short days rather than three normal ones so I get some time to myself during the day rather than just dark evenings.

AlwaysBehindTheCurve · 06/12/2020 16:05

25 mins is my nearest town with a supermarket. It’s a journey, not a commute.

CherieBabySpliffUp · 06/12/2020 16:06

25 minutes is nothing but it would depend on the cost of the journey.

Dobbyismyfavourite · 06/12/2020 16:08

No 25 minutes to work is nothing. I work part-time and it takes me 35-40 minutes in the morning. On the way home 25 minutes!

islockdownoveryet · 06/12/2020 16:10

What's it got to do with a time how far someone commutes ?.
In rush hour it can take me 40 minutes on a bad day but on a good day it's 15-20 minutes it's just very congested where I live /work .

Cherryberrypies · 06/12/2020 16:15

When I was on minimum wage I thought nothing of a 30 minute drive each way to work a 6 hour shift.

In those 6 hours I earned less than your employee. It never crossed my mind to complain about my commute.

If they are unhappy then can leave and get a job 5/10 minutes from their home.

If it doesn’t suit the business don’t allow a change. Once you do it for one you’ll have to offer it to others and then you’re probably going to end up hiring more people to cover peoples days they don’t want to travel in.

HundredMilesAnHour · 06/12/2020 16:16

Is it genuinely the time it takes to commute that they're not happy with or is it the cost of commuting? It makes sense if it's more of a cost-related request but if a 25 min journey is seriously the issue, they're going to find the real world a bit of a shock to the system.

MustardMitt · 06/12/2020 16:27

It's really up to them to make the decision whether it's worth their time/cost for commute. It doesn't suit your business, so you can't accommodate flexible working that they are suggesting.

They aren't unreasonable to ask, they are unreasonable to bitch about it!

TonMoulin · 06/12/2020 16:51

It’s up to the employee to decide.
But tbh, I’m imo very close to my work and it’s 15mins away. There aren’t many jobs where you have lesss than 20~25mins commute.

Strangedayindeed · 06/12/2020 16:55

It’s nothing.
