I know Steve Rotherham is the Metro Mayor of the city region, but what does that make Anderson?

TheGreatWave · 04/12/2020 18:31

Middlesbrough does too. An elected local Mayor and then a Tees Valley Mayor.

RhinestoneCowgirl · 04/12/2020 18:31

Bristol has 3! An elected mayor, a metro mayor and a lord mayor

RhinestoneCowgirl · 04/12/2020 18:33

I have relatives in Liverpool, they say it's an open secret that Uncle Joe takes back handers... (Obv just their opinion)

Westfacing · 04/12/2020 18:36

Well I suppose London has 33 mayors with all the Boroughs and Sadiq Khan, but no-one would know who any of them were, apart from Khan.

Glad I'm not the only one confused! I was sure the mayor was Rotherham (that confused me as well with South Yorkshire when they went into tier 3 originally) so was completely bamboozled when this other mayor appeared in the news.

beautyboxaddict · 04/12/2020 18:40

We have a Lord Mayor too so there’s 3

BobbinThreadbare123 · 04/12/2020 18:42

We've got 2 cathedrals and all!

Anderson is elected Liverpool city mayor and Rotheram is Liverpool city region mayor (like Andy Burnham for GT Manc)

Westfacing · 04/12/2020 18:44

So is there another mayor for Manchester in addition to Andy Burnhan?

OP posts:
user1471453601 · 04/12/2020 18:49

Rotherham is the Liverpool Regional mayor, jo Anderson is the Liverpool city mayor. Most place have two. A regional one and a town/ city one.

Redshoeblueshoe · 04/12/2020 18:53

In Manchester we had a referendum to see if we wanted a Metro Mayor.
The result was No. But that was the wrong answer so we got one anyway.
As for Anderson . . . .

Cherrytreepuddle · 04/12/2020 18:53

Jeez how much does all this cost I wonder?

BobbinThreadbare123 · 04/12/2020 18:53

Each borough in Gt Manchester has one eg there's a Salford one, Bolton one, Oldham one. Same with Merseyside - Wirral one, St Helens one. The region Steve Rotheram oversees is not quite Merseyside as it covers Halton, which is in Cheshire.

One of thems just been arrested. The comments on the Echo are being deleted faster than they're being posted.

madroid · 04/12/2020 19:07

That Echo site is unusable. There's so many adverts it makes the site too unstable to read, not to mention sooo slooow

MyHairNeedsASnip · 04/12/2020 19:13

Oh it's terrible. I read it via their Facebook page because it's far more user friendly.

Unescorted · 04/12/2020 19:19

The Metro Mayors cover a larger area - in Greater Manchester it is Man City, Salford, Trafford, Bury, Bolton, Oldham, Stockport, Rochdale, Tameside and Wigan. Paul Denning is the Mayor of The City Salford.

In Liverpool Joe Anderson is Mayor Liverpool City only where as Liverpool City Region is Liverpool, Halton, Knowsley, Sefton, St Helens and Wirral. Steve Rotherham is the LCR mayor.

One of them is colloquially known as "chippy tits"

Liverpool has two mayors?
Sondor · 04/12/2020 19:28

Manchester has a Lord Mayor, which is a ceremonial role filled by a councillor from the city council.

Andy Burnham is the Mayor of Greater Manchester, which encompasses not just Manchester but also 9 other regional boroughs (Salford, Bury, Bolton, Wigan etc).

London has 30 Lord Mayors, and one metro mayor.

Joe Anderson's role in Liverpool is effectively leader of the City Council, and then there's a Lord Mayor (Anna Rothery), and then a Metro Mayor (Steve Rotherham).

BackforGood · 04/12/2020 19:41

Yup, same in Birmingham.
For decades we've had the Lord Mayor of the City - a Cllr chosen by the different parties in turn - it is a 'ceremonial role' - and worked fine.
They asked us to vote about having another (Regional) one, and there was a resounding 'No'

A few years afterwards, we had to elect a regional Mayor too.

So much for democracy.
