Aibu or is this discrimination? Mask exemption

278 replies

Lowhangingfruit · 04/12/2020 16:37

Got challenged in a pub about not wearing a mask. I have an exemption card, she said it wasn't a big deal just wear one. It's our policy. Then 2 people walk in not wearing masks and walk around and she didn't say a word to them??? So aibu to be pissed off.

I had a medical appointment the other day

I was already nervous and the dr wanted to check my blood pressure

It was at stroke levels...and i think part was nerves, part is probably high blood pressure and part was the sodding mask 😀

(Light hearted...no one yell at me!)

Lowhangingfruit · 04/12/2020 20:57

@FoxyTheFox

I had an appointment with someone last week who wasn’t wearing a mask. When I asked her why (in a very polite manner) she replied ‘because I don’t want to’. She had no illness. Am I just not to ask and get on with it

Thats not an exempt person though and your employer should have policies in place for that.

Yes that's not acceptable. If I could wear a mask and avoid the verbal abuse, intimidation dirty looks I would. But I can't. End of story.

Public toilets are still closed in many areas
@Lowhangingfruit funny that in my 36 years of life, never once have I needed to go into a pub for a wee when out and about.

Basically you want the benefit of everyone else looking out for you so you can continue to do what you want.
Slow handclap. Well done would you like a medal..... Xmas Biscuit

Great, are you disabled?
You might as well say; "Well I've never experienced paralysis so people in wheelchairs must be lying or using it as an excuse for their own selfish gain!"

RufustheSniggeringReindeer · 04/12/2020 21:04

Ive had to go to a pub for a wee

I know it's like people are all born with the exact same bladder and bowel control.... 😒

I think it would be better if you had to get something signed off from the doctor that confirms your excempt from wearing a mask, and I'm not sure why it isn't that way
However, as it isn't people should not be interegeated on why they aren't wearing mask, nor refused service or entry because of it. It's annoying to think some people aren't wearing a mask when you are simply because they don't want to. But I'll take the few people who do make that choice, so that those genuinely unable to wear them are not treated like leapers or lesser humans for not wearing a mask.

Tinyhumansurvivalist · 04/12/2020 21:05

Let's not forget that most people are wearing cheap homemade masks with absolutely no medical protection whatsoever. They offer almost zero protection and actually the science suggests could increase people's chances of contracting cobid as they are not changed anywhere near regularly enough.

Hidden disabilities exist...hence the massive campaign for accessibly toilets etc that have been running in the last few years.

I am exempt. I have a chronic lung condition which makes breathing with a mask on almost impossible. I was also raped and find the mask to be exceptionally triggering. I will not wear one. Even my gp surgery is aware and does not make me wear one, nor does the hospital.

However, what the diabilist judgemental ignorant posters on here are failing to do is actually read the original post.

The bar maid had no legal right to question once she had been told the op was exempt.

The bar maid was not acting with consistency

Not necessarily discrimination but certainly not good customer service.

Op you have every right to be pissed off.

Barearseloverofthigh · 04/12/2020 21:06

@Ihatefish

In our local Sainsbury’s they constantly play a message saying some people can’t wear masks and they recognise that (and so should the self righteous cunts who stand there insisting a stranger relives their rape experience-or whatever stops them wearing a mask). I like that message. Yes there are a lot of people who are exempt. There’s lots of people who have been raped, suffered a trauma that involved inability to breathe leading to ptsd, lots of people who have physical problems that prevent them from wearing one. Just because you are lucky enough to be able to wear one doesn’t give you the right to act like a first class cunt. Most people are wearing them.

Yes it's very true. Very good description. I'm not that good with words like you. I'm sorry you have to deal with it as well x

She went for a wee, @Yeahnahmum. Even if OP had gone for a full piss-up at the pub, if she had adhered to all of the regulations she was able to, she would be well within her rights to do so.

Tinyhumansurvivalist · 04/12/2020 21:14

@Yeahnahmum

Yabu if you dont wanna wear a mask but DO want to go to the pub Hmm
Why?

Just because she is disabled does not mean she is not allowed to socialise.

Pop a mask on at the door, walk to the table, take it off again. 30 seconds max.

"Pop out of your wheelchair, walk to the table, get back in it again. 30 seconds max". Hope the people posting these things can hear how they sound.

FoxyTheFox · 04/12/2020 21:17

There is this weird attitude in society that disabled people should only exist in this saint-like state of self-sacrifice and determination and that their sole purpose is to be a figure of both inspiration and pity. And then when they move out of that stereotyped little box by behaving like an Actual Person, people get pissy about it because it challenges their narrow view of disability and disabled people.

Lowhangingfruit · 04/12/2020 21:18

Maybe we should stick all the disabled people in a building. Wait let's see if we have made any progress shall we....Envy

I cannot for the life of me fathom what could possibly stop someone from wearing a mask for such a short period of time

Disability.

Illness.

Long term medical condition.

Mental illness or condition including PTSD.

Do I need to go on?

berrygirlie · 04/12/2020 21:19

Absolutely, @FoxyTheFox. Plus the additional box of "disabled people are essentially children who can't be trusted with bodily autonomy / their own decisions and experiences of their disability."

I cannot for the life of me fathom what possible risks could be avoided by forcing a traumatised or disabled person to wear a mask for 30 seconds max
