To train my hair to be washed only once a week

I binned sls and silicones around 6 weeks ago and I can now go a week before washing again. Previously it had to be done every other day because I have really fine, lifeless hair.

It can be done!

Which shampoo did you switch to?

Yanbu to wash as infrequently as you need, I wish I could!

DrinkFeckArseGirls · 03/12/2020 16:26

Same here. It doesn’t even look greasy at the end of day 7. For years (decades?) I did all the wrong things with my hair on the basis that it was fine and easily greased Confused Now I wash less, heavily condition/ moisturise/ even use oils and it’s so much better now.

Florelei · 03/12/2020 16:27

I’ve been doing this inadvertently during lockdown and my hair is in much better condition than it used to be.

YANBU

Trolldom · 03/12/2020 16:27

On account of my hair being dry, curly and damaged as fuck I could go 8 ish days without washing it, never got greasy. Then I went lock down mad and gave myself a fringe and now that bastard is a grease magnet...

TooExtraImmatureCheddar · 03/12/2020 16:28

By using SLS-free shampoo I can get from washing daily to every 2nd or 3rd day - that’s big for me! But I use dry shampoo which is still putting chemicals on my scalp/hair. Not sure which is worse, really.

PickAChew · 03/12/2020 16:28

Glad it worked for you. I can go 3 days if I'm lucky. My scalp breaks out if I push it too far.

OverTheRubicon · 03/12/2020 16:29

It's never worked for me, my hair is fine and so oily. What do you use?

CounsellorTroi · 03/12/2020 16:29

I have always washed my hair once a week. That's what people did in the 60s and 70s and we weren't all walking about with greasy hair. Shampoo manufacturers decided we'd use a lot more of their stuff if we could be persuaded to wash our hair more often.

TooExtraImmatureCheddar · 03/12/2020 16:30

DrinkFeckArseGirls, which shampoo do you use?

FourTeaFallOut · 03/12/2020 16:31

What is this witchcraft? I look like a scarecrow by day 3 if I don't keep washing even with the 'right' shampoo and conditioner.

I'd love to make it to once a week - I hate drying it most of all.

SmileyClare · 03/12/2020 16:31

Can we see a picture of it on day 7?

I'm convinced mine would look horribly greasy after 2 days. And I just love the look of my hair freshly washed and coated in silicone so it's all shiny.

44PumpLane · 03/12/2020 16:31

I attempted to do this at the start of lockdown and I just had a greasy mop! I have such fine hair.

OP can you share EXACTLY what shampoo or products you are now using please as I'd love to give it another go!!

CounsellorTroi · 03/12/2020 16:34

I use Ogx shampoo and conditioner they are sulfate free.

speakout · 03/12/2020 16:34

Doesn't it smell?

I couldn't wash that infrequently- sweat from exercise and that "unwashed scalp" smell would make me feel less than clean.

Homemadearmy · 03/12/2020 16:35

I wash my hair once a week and it doest get greasy. I have thick hair so maybe it's just hair type

SmileyClare · 03/12/2020 16:36

I don't know, doesn't it smell a bit after a week? I think it's psychological but I'm not in a good mood if I feel a bit unclean/hair not washed.

picklemewalnuts · 03/12/2020 16:36

I wash mine every ten to fourteen days with an egg, or henna powder.

Day one, it's curly/wavy and dry.
Day seven it's sleek and bouncy.
Day ten I start to wear it up or wash my scalp with just water, which makes the ends curly again.

I occasionally use other things- vinegar, aqua faba, etc, but egg and henna are my go to.

picklemewalnuts · 03/12/2020 16:39

But I don't get sweaty! And I'm not an oily person.
If I wash too often it gets very dry.

Also, I don't use product in my hair, so nothing to wash out or for dirt to stick to.
I use a natural bristle brush and a wooden comb.

I don't go on public transport. When I do, I usually wash after because I can smell it on me, my hair and my clothes.

Pukkatea · 03/12/2020 16:41

Do people who do this also do sweaty exercise? Curious as after a workout my hair is absolutely stuck to my head with sweat...

QueenPaws · 03/12/2020 16:42

I can usually do 4-5 days then wash (no shampoo) not because it's greasy but because my curls start dropping and losing definition

CounsellorTroi · 03/12/2020 16:42

My scalp doesn't sweat. I have thick slightly dry hair.

SmileyClare · 03/12/2020 16:47

Who are you people that don't sweat or produce oil? Grin What about in a heatwave?

Is this a curly thing I wonder and is anyone brave enough to post a hair pic around a week after washing? I'm struggling to believe this works.
I mean I'm not sure you can "train" hair? It's dead.

Wexone · 03/12/2020 16:52

I have very long thick hair, before lockdown was every three or four days, now during lockdown i managed to train my hair and now wash it once a week. But i didnt change any shamporr or anything. Always used salon brands like Kerastase and JoCo. They last so much longer than supermarket bought shampoos as you use less. Before lockdown i would get a blow dry in teh hairdressers and i would get 5 days out of it before i would need to wash it. Am sitting here now, hair up in a bun and i havent washed it sonce Friday last week, only used dry shampoo yesterday.

doadeer · 03/12/2020 16:54

I do mine once a week too, it doesn't even look greasy by day seven, I just like the smell of the shampoo so I wash it when I can no longer smell that. If I've straighted it and faffed around with it more it gets greasy.

Wexone · 03/12/2020 16:54

Meant to add that my sister has very fine thin hair. She would have had to wash it every day before lockdown and now she has done the same and managaed to train it so she only washing twice a week . She did spend a few weeks with her hair quite yucky but she then saw a huge difference
