To train my hair to be washed only once a week

I binned sls and silicones around 6 weeks ago and I can now go a week before washing again. Previously it had to be done every other day because I have really fine, lifeless hair.

It can be done!

*Do people who do this also do sweaty exercise? Curious as after a workout my hair is absolutely stuck to my head with sweat...

Exactly!!

Scarby9 · 03/12/2020 17:29

I have got mine up to once every four days, if that falls on a weekday, five if it is a weekend.
I went longer in the first few weeks of lockdown, but I find Zoom can be a bit unforgiving.

lazylinguist · 03/12/2020 17:34

The thing is, I also don't really see the point of wanting to leave my hair unwashed for a week. It takes 1 minute to wash it in the shower I'd be having daily anyway, and about 3 minutes to blow-dry it (if I bother).

ScrapThatThen · 03/12/2020 17:34

Yes it's like the switching shower gel for soap thing all over again - they are selling us stuff that makes us need it more often.

I switched to the earth bits shampoo bar expecting it to be rubbish like the other bars I had tried and now unless I'm doing sport I hardly need to remember or bother to wash it.

Because for me, it takes more than a minute to wash properly, and ages to dry to look nice, and it's far better for my hair to not get stripped everyday
User0ne · 03/12/2020 17:39

Day 8, will probably wash it on Saturday.

If I swim then it needs washing more often. If I run 8-10 days is still ok.

CorianderQueen · 03/12/2020 17:39

I didn't have to train it I just stopped one day and nothing changed.

Everything about me is dry though - eczema, dry hair, dry eyes, I barely sweat it takes about 10 days for my hair to get greasy.

My hair feels normal after exercise except swimming.

The bad side is I'm effing dry all the time.

grassisjeweled · 03/12/2020 17:39

Op. We need a pic. Also, if your roots are a mess, then sorry, you've failed.

HikeForward · 03/12/2020 17:40

I don’t think this really works unless you have thick porous hair that absorbs oil. Maybe aim for twice a week?

I get the first bit, although I refuse to spend ages doing anything to my hair. But I've heard the thing about it being bad to 'strip' your hair before and I don't really get it. How does washing out the dirt, sweat and product strip your hair, as long as you're using a decent conditioner after?

I meant the colour!! Rude!

I have posted under a different name because I'm being silly and paranoid about people recognising me

Failed what?

Wexone · 03/12/2020 17:45

@lazylinguist would love if could blow dry my hair in 3 mins. It atkes me at leats 20 mins to wash it. Then another 20 mins to blast dy it or at least an hour to blow dry it poperly to make it look decent. Its an effort to wash my hair

CorianderQueen · 03/12/2020 17:49

I also never need to use dry shampoo...not even after a week

RuthW · 03/12/2020 17:52

My hair would go two sleeps and then was so greasy the top looked wet.

Over lockdown, I grew it and it went curly. I now go 5 days. The only difference is that I only put mousse on the ends now instead of all of it.

Shock Well, I guess it's my one advantage of having thin, fine, straight hair. If I hang about too long after my shower it dries before I can blow-dry it and I have to wet it again. I blow-dry it upside down to get a tiny bit of volume in, but there's no point in spending much time and effort because it's flat and looks like I haven't bothered 20 minutes later anyway. Even when the hairdresser does it.

lazylinguist · 03/12/2020 17:57

Nothing works on my hair. Dry shampoo makes it look weird. Perms don't take. Product weighs it down. Curl it under and it uncurls in 10 mins. I've given up!

LadyFeliciaMontague · 03/12/2020 17:59

I use these

www.boots.com/noughty-care-taker-shampoo-250ml-10256197

www.hollandandbarrett.com/shop/product/faith-in-nature-jojoba-conditioner-60020469

Before I started using them I was having to use nizorel shampoo for awful dandruff that head & shoulders & T gel wouldn’t shift. It was reading a thread on here that made me try them.

My hair had also gone really thin & flat but has much more body and bounce in it these days since I switched.

OverTheRubicon · 03/12/2020 18:00

Agree with others, I'd love to see pictures / and hear of products from people with fine, straight hair and oily skin generally. I used to work in a remote job and washed my hair every 5-6 days for months at a time, but by end of day 2 every time it would be oily and I could smell it Envy (not envy) even when using the natural shampoos that worked ok for my colleagues with thicker/curlier/drier hair.

If there is a way to make it work, I'll be so thrilled to be proven wrong though!

Me too! On the plus side, mine barely ever needs detangling, as it just kind of hangs there...

Really do try getting rid of silicones and sls and stick with it for at least 6 weeks!

I've heard great things
EasterIssland · 03/12/2020 18:04

I have just coloured and now I managed 5 days or so when before was every 2

SmileyClare · 03/12/2020 18:12

I suppose it depends on not only hair type but skin type as well (dry or oily skin) and lifestyle.

I'm still sceptical about "training" hair, it doesn't have a memory?. The poster with long brown hair in the pic does look lovely so it clearly suits some people.

I honestly would rather put the work in washing and blow drying because I like the feeling of really clean hair. I'm prepared to sacrifice a bit more time in bed! I'm not a convert Op sorry Smile

lazylinguist · 03/12/2020 18:12

day7 - I get my lovely shampoo bars and conditioner refills from my local zero waste shop. I've just checked and they are silicone and sls free. I just have shit hair. Grin
