To train my hair to be washed only once a week

twentyfourth · 03/12/2020 16:22

I binned sls and silicones around 6 weeks ago and I can now go a week before washing again. Previously it had to be done every other day because I have really fine, lifeless hair.

It can be done!

I wash every other day my hair seems to absorb every smell around it and is greasy as hell if I try to get to day 3 without washing. My kids have said it smells of vomit by day 3 if they hug meBlush

Bearnecessity · 03/12/2020 18:32

I have been doing this for decades, it is great and I have always had healthy, bouncy hair.

dayslikethese1 · 03/12/2020 18:50

I don't think this works on my hair (very fine, straightish, oily). When I was a kid DM would always tell me I only needed to wash it once a week and basically didn't let me do it more often but I basically had greasy hair all through my child/early teen years and thought that was just normal. When I got older I realised I didn't have to put up with oil slick hair if I just washed it more often Grin But I agree it works for some.

blackpoolsneighbour · 03/12/2020 18:52

I only wash mine once a week, it looks much shinier and curlier as a result.

SmileyClare · 03/12/2020 18:53

my kids have said it smells of vomit by day 3 Sorry but Grin

Thegingerpig · 03/12/2020 19:20

I only wash my hair once a week. It’s very curly and quite dry though so I get that different hair types couldn’t do this! I always use SLS free shampoo and also silicone free conditioner. I’m using Moo Goo at the moment.

AcornAutumn · 03/12/2020 19:22

I accidentally bought SLS free shampoo and it took me a couple of days to work out why my hair looked so awful.

How long did it take your hair to stop looking awful? The convenience of less hair washing might be good.

Wexone · 03/12/2020 19:55

@acornautumn I had about two months of it. you need to allow at least 6 weeks of it. so I reduced it from every two days to every three days for the 1st two weeks then moved it up to eve y three days for about three weeks after then moved up a day again for a few weeks and so on. it did help that we were in lockdown and wasn't going anywhere plus no zoom. I used dry shampoo in between when I could. I also purchased a silk pillow case don't know if it helped but find now my hair is less frizzy too.

Less for me. About two weeks

Wheresmykimchi · 03/12/2020 20:20

I wash mine every day Blush

day7 · 03/12/2020 20:20

@SmileyClare

I suppose it depends on not only hair type but skin type as well (dry or oily skin) and lifestyle.

I'm still sceptical about "training" hair, it doesn't have a memory?. The poster with long brown hair in the pic does look lovely so it clearly suits some people.

I honestly would rather put the work in washing and blow drying because I like the feeling of really clean hair. I'm prepared to sacrifice a bit more time in bed! I'm not a convert Op sorry Smile

The more you strip your skin or scalp of natural oils, the more oil your skin or scalp will produce to overcompensate.
OwlinaTree · 03/12/2020 20:29

I wash mine every day. Used to be every other, started on every day about 20 years ago.

Most mornings I'm so sweaty it would be more effort to not wash it than to wash it. I just let it dry naturally though, it's dry by the time I get to work.

RunnyPaint · 03/12/2020 20:31

I have tried to train my hair several times over the years, using various SLS free cleansers and avoiding silicone. It's never worked for my greasy, fine hair, and the sense of relief when I started washing my hair again was always amazing. The longest I went without real shampoo was about 9 months. It just doesn't work for some people.

EveryDayIsADuvetDay · 03/12/2020 20:33

I cowash mine, usually every 7 days, just so that if its a Saturday....
I only use shampoo probably every three months or so, if it feels that there's a build up of product.
I've been sls free for abut 4 or 5 years. I wet my hair most mornings (just comb some water through, not completely wet), and sometimes use a curl reviver spray, then just hang my head down and fluff it a bit to encourage the curl.
Someone stopped me the other day on a Friday(day 6) to say my hair smelt amazing, so it isn't rank.

Cantu is my go to range, although I have a few others.

SewingBeeAddict · 03/12/2020 20:34

@lazylinguist

The thing is, I also don't really see the point of wanting to leave my hair unwashed for a week. It takes 1 minute to wash it in the shower I'd be having daily anyway, and about 3 minutes to blow-dry it (if I bother).
Totally agree. It doesnt train your hair, it just looks like you need a hairwash 😂

As for dry shampoo 🤢 lovely
Greasy roots that look dusty !

I LOVE the feeling of freshly washed hair and feel utterly manky with dirty hair. How do people stand it? My hair isnt even greasy
IsolaPribby · 03/12/2020 20:45

I shower every day, and can't see the point of not washing my hair whilst I'm in there.
I used to use mousse and blow dry it every day, but since lockdown I am not using any product and just leaving it to dry naturally after brushing through. I have grown it a bit too. It's never looked better.

CounsellorTroi · 03/12/2020 20:57

I'm sure your hair does smell great, I'm just curious as to how someone got close enough to smell it!

MissDoNowt · 03/12/2020 20:58

This will sound rank.

I live alone and I'm disabled. I would usually get my hair washed weekly at the hairdressers but obviously Covid and me being shielded means I haven't been able to go weekly.

Its been 9 weeks since I washed it. Seriously, it went through a bit of grease about 3 weeks back but now it feels normal ! It is long and curly and I wear it up.

Nameandgamechange123 · 03/12/2020 20:59

I'm so jealous. My hair follows this pattern
Day 1: wash and looks great for about 30 mins.
30 mins later : looks thin and flat and wispy
After one hour :has to be put in a pony tail and starts to look greasy
Several hours later : looks terrible but I must wait until morning to wash it.
Day 2: I could not be seen dead with hair like this. Must wash at once.

BillyGroatsChuff · 03/12/2020 20:59

I can go 7 days with not a touch of grease in sight but my scalp does get itchy so I usually wash twice a week. No more than that though

Ohdoleavemealone · 03/12/2020 21:01

I have started doing every 4-5. Day 1 wash, day 3 dry shampoo, day 4 curly hair, wash day 5.
WAs every other day until lockdown.

ShitOnIt00 · 03/12/2020 21:02

I think this is very dependent on hair type. I cowash twice a week and never use shampoo. It never smells or gets greasy. I think finer hair probably would. But it takes easily 20 mins to wash and then 45 mins to dry with the hairdryer so isn’t very practical to wash every day.
