AIBU?

To turn down a 3x salary job?

I'm really really torn. Earlier in the year I got offered a job that pays £60k. I couldn't take it as it required relocation. They just got back to me to say they're happy to offer same role, different location but within commuting distance (1 hour drive). My current job pays £21k. I love what I'm building with it but I seriously doubt it will ever get beyond £30k. So it's between loving my company/job and the £££s. I'm absolutely torn.

The biggest issues is that I wouldn't see my DP at all 3 days a week as our schedules would overlap.

I'm jealous that you've jumped from 21k to 60k!? Whats the secret!

You must be mad even to think of turning it down. This will impact the rest of your life, and when you get to (no doubt by then) 70-odd, you'll be very glad your pension is based on £60,000 not £20,000!
Your lovely company would dump you in a blink if it suited them.
This is how women hold themselves back.

From just the numbers I’d have said “go for it”, but reading further posts I’m less sure. It sounds as though you would need do:

  1. work nights, which would severely interfere with your sleep patterns, social life and relationships, AND
  2. exit an industry that you love.

That is a high personal price to pay. But it’s also a lot of money. Difficult decision. Good luck with it!

I wouldn't work for Amazon, even for 60k. Also, if you have a chance to move up in your current job in a field you love, wouldn't that be better?
Is there any chance of your current employers being able to improve your package/promote you if you talked to them?

And let your DP - who hasn't even given you the security of marriage - hold back his own career if he wants to see you every day.
You'll manage fine seeing him four days a week. Sounds perfect to me!

My partner has had a similar dilemma in the past, he could probably double his salary if he moved to another sector (finance) but he doesn't want to and I don't actually think it would be worth the money even though it would be amazing.

@katy1213 we're getting married. But I'm the career minded one.

We're both low earners, our current joint salaries don't make it past £45k.

Your last two points surely demonstrate that this is the right move for you, honestly I don't think you have the luxury of turning down £40k a year (ok I know it's not 40k strictly but you know what I mean!) just because you like the company where you are now.

I know for a lot of people money is the bottom line but I personally feel that enjoyment of your job is as important. After all you'll spend about a third of your life there.

I left a very well paid role after just 3 months because I spent every evening and weekend dreading the next working day.
I'm now back doing something I love for less than half that salary and I'm as happy as I've ever been. Would it be nice to have an extra few hundred quid a month in my account? Absolutely, but it's not worth being miserably for the next 40 years.

So if you truly love your current role I'd be hesitant to jump ship solely for a bigger salary.

It's not just the company it's the industry. If somebody told me (money aside) would you rather work in the same industry as Spotify, iTunes, etc.. or Logistics ... I would choose my current industry a million times. It's literally for the money. Yes, I like being a manager but I know I'll become one in my current company it's a bit vague when but it's happening.

take it - my friend's dd was head hunted by a company that her firm had previously sub contracted her out to. She got a huge jump in salary too - and because they WANTED her skill set they bent over backwards to keep her.

I think she was surprised at how safe that extra salary made her feel. So long as you don't start massively upping your lifestyle and spending it will give you a lot of security.

wow, they wouldn't have to ask me twice. i'm always underpaid so i guess to get 3x my salary i'd be willing to drive an hour one way, which isn't really that long at all.

logistics is hugely important - you will have transferable skills that be used in other, more socially useful, sectors, if you choose to move on. Look at what is about to happen with the implementation of vaccine delivery - all logistics.

@Fressia123 but you are on a pittance currently and clearly dais or of earning more, you've ticked the music box, can't you go over to a more senior and higher paying position and then keep an eye out for a music employer who pays more appropriately after a little while?

SoTiredNeedHoliday · 03/12/2020 14:27

Of course you should take it. Just make sure its a long term position not a short term role.

@wigglerose

I couldn't hand in my notice quickly enough.

Your company would bin you without a second thought if necessary, always remember that.

Like other posters have said, you could take a step back if it doesn't work out in the future.

Also, it might open new doors for you.

This!!!

Problem is location. We can't move. Jobs as much as they want to make them sound they're happy to be remote aren't fully remote and we can't relocate.

I’d take it, in your position. It is a stepping stone, and you’re at an ideal time to accept a commute, some shift work, seeing your DP a little less. You don’t have to stay in that industry forever, but you’ll learn loads and have lots of transferable skills through logistics. Logistics is huge right now with brexit, Covid vaccine etc. And amazon is a hugely profitable organisation, and likely to stay so. Which means much higher job and salary security.

I work in the City. I don’t know anyone who has less than an hour’s commute anymore. It is really common.

Your heart is in what you are building where you are, so I say stay on track.
