When is the right time to decorate your house for Christmas?

I always thought it was traditionally twelve days before and twelve days after but I think I might have got that wrong and it’s only just the 12 days after that matter. Oops!

We tended to go for the weekend closest to 12 days before though. Can’t wait to get it up. In the last few days of November I was scoffing at people having their tree up but now I’m really ready for it. We’re finishing off a lot of decorating and probably have a couple of weeks left of that to do so we will wait till that’s finished before we get it.

I got the advent things out on Nov 29, filled the calendar that needed filling on the evening of Nov 30. Christmas cards go up as I get them. I will bring the tree inside and decorate it on either the 23 Dec after work or the 24th.

We used to do it about 10 days before Christmas but it's impossible these days with bouncy kids wanting them up earlier. We put them up on 30 November this year, although not the main big tree - being real I don't want it to be bald by 25th so we'll put one up at the coming weekend.

Since we've had kids I've always done it the first weekend in December, before that I used to wait until after DHs birthday which is in mid December.

15th November 🎄
Although I put the fairy lights around the conservatory a couple of weeks earlier it helps to light the path to the wheelie bin Xmas Grin

Usually the first weekend in December but this year it went up two weekends ago because you know it’s 2020 so why not!

Biscusting · 03/12/2020 07:37

Normal = first weekend in December
Pandemic = July

41weekswithno2 · 03/12/2020 07:44

We do ours the first weekend in December.

TheGlitterFairy · 03/12/2020 07:45

Usually 2nd weekend in Dec; this year I’ll be doing it this weekend. Always down by the 12th night after though.

DuzzyFuck · 03/12/2020 07:52

This coming weekend.

The traditional day was Christmas Eve - reflecting the fact that the tree was for Christmas, not Advent.

We generally do ours from the 18th Dec or thereabouts - everything stays up until Twelfth Night. We always have a real tree. CofE churches generally put out their crib scenes from about the 18th, and people used to decorate their houses to coincide.

I’m afraid I think people who decorate in November and have it all down on Boxing Day are massively missing the point...
