Had an interview and was asked if I preferred being called Charlotte or Charlie (example): responded, 'oh, Charlie please, Charlotte is what I used to get called when my mum was telling me off' - was trying to be humorous but now cursing myself for social awkwardness...

I think you're over thinking it. It was a pretty innocuous comment.

Sounds like a perfectly normal comment to me. Lots of people prefer an informal version of their first name.

Sounds fine. And good they asked you. I hate people shortening my name without permission. Which I’d never give.

It’s absolutely fine and a very normal thing to say but I totally get the overthinking it , I do it with everything .

i use the shortened version of my name and that's what I say too. Wouldn't think about it too much, but its good that they asked.

person: Hi Charlotte how are you today?
me: Oh charlie please, I'm only charlotte when I'm in trouble!

One of the people I admire the most said that today-- you're fine!
