I’m in hospital and my kids are not allowed to visit was just talking to my DD 7 on the phone and she was telling she wants to a ambulance driver when she is older.
It got me thinking about what I wanted when I was younger.
As a young child I wanted to be an astronaut, as I got older but was still at school I wanted to be a lawyer.
At 28 ( now ) I am a pretty successful make up artist and stylist but miles away from the child/ teen aspirations 🤣
What about you ?

I wanted to be a nurse which was daft as I’m very squeamish and not good at science. Ended up a solicitor.

Justjoinedforthis · 02/12/2020 06:30

Wanted to be an archeologist / luxury hotel reviewer.
Am a nursery nurse now!

hijabijabi · 02/12/2020 06:32

I wanted to be a journalist, I'm a researcher. I do spend most days writing so not a million miles away! Hope you're back with your children soon.

Whattheactual20201 · 02/12/2020 06:35

Haha @Justjoinedforthis luxury hotel reviewer what an amazing job that would be 🤣🤣

I wanted to be an air hostess. We always went to Ireland by ferry when I was a kid, so never flew until I was 20Hmm

I'm a mental health nurse.

FancySomeChips · 02/12/2020 06:39

Wanted to be a ballerina, artist or writer- I actually think I could have been successful at 2 of these! But coming from a very poor background and quite a turbulent childhood,I needed the stability of regular income. I’m a teacher now- so I do a bit of dancing, a bit of art and a shed load of writing every week, sometimes everyday!

Whattheactual20201 · 02/12/2020 06:41

@Spidey66 and @FancySomeChips at least join both have very rewarding jobs now !!
I often think I wish I had gone for something that helped people !
I’m not sure making the people you watch on telly look TV worthy is quite as rewarding 🤣

I wanted to be an author. I'm an English teacher now.

Wish you a speedy recovery.

PirateCatQueen · 02/12/2020 06:42

My cousin is a luxury hotel reviewer. Before that he modelled for Dolce & Gabbana and was an editor for a men’s magazine. Life of Riley.

Anyway, when we got asked this at primary school I said I wanted to be a nun. When asked why I said “to help people”. I ended up working in international development and charity sectors. So similar, but more sex.

I did consider becoming a Buddhist nun in my late twenties and started working towards it, but realised it probably wouldn’t be for me as I’m a bit too headstrong. Still meditate a lot.

Plsv87 · 02/12/2020 06:43

Also OP your job sounds awesome - I'd love to do that!

Pyewhacket · 02/12/2020 06:44

I wanted to be a midwife and trained as a midwife but ended up in emergency medicine so yes and no.

Whattheactual20201 · 02/12/2020 06:45

Haha @PirateCatQueen that’s hilarious !

I once told my RE teacher in secondary school I wanted to be a nun, she did not mention the fact there was no sex but she did something about ( along time ago now ) a vow of silence of some kind and said I would fail miserably.
In fact I was actually pregnant before I left school so she was probably right :/ I would have failed 🤣

Whattheactual20201 · 02/12/2020 06:46

@Plsv87 it pays well but not many people realise how stressful it is 🤣

Also wanted to be a paramedic. From primary school right through to actually almost applying to train to be one instead of A-Levels. My mum talked me out of it and I have ended up not a million miles away in Nursing and am now an academic in Nursing.

purplechairandcat · 02/12/2020 06:47

I wanted to be a writer (age 5-10), an actor (age 10-16) and a filmmaker (age 14-16). I also always knew I wanted to work with people and as a teen was interested in equalities work.

I'm now a writer, a freelance youth theatre artist working with vulnerable young people, and an assistant producer for a small film company that makes documentaries about various people doing things. So I'm pretty much right on the money!

Spidey66 · 02/12/2020 06:50

At least your job sounds glamourous. Nothing glamourous about administering depot medication, or encouraging someone to have a shower!

ThornAmongstRoses · 02/12/2020 06:50

I wanted to be a midwife or an author.

I’m now a paediatric nurse working with 0-2 year olds, a community breast feeding supporter, training to be a breastfeeding councillor, and I write novels in my spare time.

I’m not too far away from my dream really Grin

PirateCatQueen · 02/12/2020 06:54

@Whattheactual20201 I’d have failed at the silence vow too for sure.

Whattheactual20201 · 02/12/2020 06:55

Haha @Spidey66 at time’s sometimes not so much
I have a regular 4 time a week can’t say who with but it can be more stressful than glamorous.
I then have 1 day a week dedicated to other jobs , which I to tend to find a bit more exciting/ glamorous but suppose that’s because it changes week to week where as being on the the same set with the same people 4 days a week isn’t as exciting / glam 🤣

I wanted to be an air hostess and now I am a dental nurse which is a lot less fun

I loved John thaw when I was young so at one point wanted to be a forensic pathologist, and then a barrister.

I now work part time in admin support in aviation 🙄

pinkpixie83 · 02/12/2020 07:00

I wanted to be a teacher, then I wanted to work in the theatre.

I spent many years in retail and am now an administrator, so nothing like my aspirations.

Although this year has taught me that I never would have made it as a teacher.

Whattheactual20201 · 02/12/2020 07:02

@pinkpixie83 you and me both !
