Dd14 started with the symptoms of a water infection two weeks ago. After a conversation with the emergency doctor she was prescribed three days work of antibiotics and we were told that of she still had symptoms on the fourth day to contact our gp. I did as the symptoms hadn't lessened. Our gp emailed back to ask us to take her in for a urine dip. This apparently came back clear. That was last Wednesday. Her symptoms have worsened but as we had been told she definitely didn't have a water infection she's been drinking loads of water and taking paracetamol when needed.
The last two days she started with a temp and started being sick. She hasn't eaten since Sunday. This morning I checked her temp and it was 39'
I emailed our gp at 8am. At 10am I rang 111 who told me to take her to the local walk in centre. They initially refused to see her as she had a temp. Once I reinforced that we had been told to attend by 111 they saw her in a side room.
Five minutes later we were told to go to a&e. On arrival at a&e her temp was 40 and didn't come down for a long time after they gave her ibuprofen.
She's now been admitted with a kidney infection and is on iv antibiotics. She can't keep her temp down and isn't eating.
Now I'm worried that I should have been more forceful at the docs when we were told that the test was clear even though she was still having symptoms. I feel like I've messed up.

sorry to hear the same thing happened to me and the gp gave me a 3 day supply for urine infection called nitrfurantoin but if didnt work so they gave me a week supply of the same thing this still didn't work after i got cephalexin week supply it worked. Just remember the medication for next time. Some urine infections that have gone up to the kidneys seem harder to treat. I had my infection 3 weeks without knowing really before bad symtoms like back pain and none stop peeing. Sounds like you did the right thing 111 also can send you to pick up meds if out of hours.

SleepingStandingUp · 01/12/2020 18:18

You did your best oo, you followed their advice and when it was clear it wasn't working you went back and pushed harded. You didn't fail

formerbabe · 01/12/2020 18:20

Hindsight is a wonderful thing. Don't worry

Marmite27 · 01/12/2020 18:22

I had a kidney infection at a similar age. I projectile vomited and felt like I was dying.

You haven’t done anything other than follow the medical advice you were given.

I hope your daughter feels better soon.

Pleasegodgotosleep · 01/12/2020 18:23

I have an on going kidney problem that results in repeated It is. Very few antibiotics work, and urine dios are often clear but having had this for over 20 years I KNOW when something's wrong. If this re-occurs ease be forceful with gp. Kudney unfevtions can bevome sepsis very easily and untreated infections can cause scarring to the kidneys.
Really good it's getting sorted now, I hope she feels well soon

KnockThatVolumeDown · 01/12/2020 18:24

Thank you. I really appreciate the time taken to reply. I think I feel a bit helpless. I'm staying with her tonight. She has been so brave.

You did your best, and your DD is getting the treatment she needs now, though I sometimes think it's our job almost to feel guilty as parents!
I had something similar, I started with mild symptoms and SIX urine tests later (3 of which they confirmed my lack of pregnancy - that it didn't go to be tested for 🙄 and of the other 3 two vanished and one was positive for infection) I ended up with a kidney infection too. Sadly I ended up in hospital on IV antibiotics because to compound the situation the chemist closed due to all the staff testing positive and they had my script. Drs were refusing to redo and we just had to wait it out. That bit was no one's fault really but I went through 111 and then a&e and had the temperature issues etc. I'm fine now, hope your DD is feeling better soon

BovrilonToast · 01/12/2020 18:29

The same thing happened to me about 14 years ago, the GP misdiagnosed a kidney infection and I ended up in hospital. She’ll be right as rain soon. Try not to worry. Flowers

Dontpasstovardy · 01/12/2020 18:33

I always get given at least a 7 day prescription of antibiotics. Is a 3 day one common?

littleharissa · 01/12/2020 19:17

Exactly the same thing happened to me when I was younger.

All water infections were missed by the GP and it wasn't until I had a kidney infection that people started paying attention.

Bit crap, but no the end of the world.
She'll be fine OP, cut yourself some slack

I'm assuming it was just to get her over the weekend until the gp was open? I've never heard of one either.

Uck the poor soul, she must be feeling rotten. The important thing is that she's being looked after now by the best people for the job.
You did the right thing by getting her attention today and that's all that matters. Thanks

KnockThatVolumeDown · 01/12/2020 19:51

@41weekswithno2 rotten is literally the word I've been using. She's very weepy and missing her siblings.

Erinaz · 01/12/2020 19:52

yes its a nitrrofurantoin a 3 or 7 day course.

WellIWasInTheNeighbourhoo · 01/12/2020 20:17

In my experience anything related to female issues is side lined by the NHS. Same thing happened to me as a young person and Ive had issues ever since. The bacteria embeds itself in the lining of the urinary system and lies dormant until opportunity presents. Use this experience to impart the seriousness of the problem if it presents again. Kidney damage is no small thing.

sakura06 · 01/12/2020 20:24

You did the right thing. You kept pushing and got your DD treatment. Hope she feels better soon.

KnockThatVolumeDown · 02/12/2020 00:11

I'm so tired. I just can't get to sleep. Luckily dd is out for the count and has managed to doze through all the obs so far. They've given her more oral meds and put the fan back on as she's got hot again. So I'm freezing. Not that I mind. I'd forgotten how noisy hospitals can be at night. I've got ear plugs in but they don't block out much. Plus they've just admitted a child's whose father has been on the phone to family members and doesn't seem to know how loud he is. Sad
I'm trying to do stuff on here until I can't keep my eyes open. Next lot of iv antibiotics at 1am so I need to sleep before then as dd found the last lot quite painful 😣
Thanks for the handholds.

This happened to my daughter last year when she was two and I beat myself up awfully about it. Please be kind to yourself. I hope she gets better soon xxx

KnockThatVolumeDown · 02/12/2020 03:55

Thank you. The one bit of time I needed to be awake whilst she had her second lot of iv antibiotics I was out for the count Blush
The doctor has just come in and said there's some issue with her blood results. Could be lab error which they think it is or something bad. He didn't expand just asked her if it was ok for him to take some more bloods. He seemed to take loads and did it from her arm which made her feel sick and panicky.
She did so well and hopefully these will come back with some more answers. I'm so worried.

BefuddledPerson · 02/12/2020 04:04

So sorry you're very worried. Did the doctor say what they are testing for? At least you are in the right place and have experts to look into things now. Try very hard to just keep breathing calmly, the waiting is awful but eventually the time passed. Flowers

Gunpowder · 02/12/2020 04:38

You didn’t mess up. You advocated for your daughter and even when the walk in didn’t want to see you you insisted. You brought her to a&e. You did all the rights things with the information you had. You are a great mum. BefuddledPerson is right that you are in the right place and I hope the new blood test results come soon. Flowers

Gunpowder · 02/12/2020 04:38

*Right not rights

HaggieMaggie · 02/12/2020 05:54

I hope she’s better soon OP 💐

moose62 · 02/12/2020 06:37

You certainly didn't mess up. I was given a three day course of antibiotics for the same thing even though I told the locum doctor that I was a diabetic and should have 7 days. 4 calls to the doctor later I ended up in hospital with Eurosepsis. It can happen to anyone. I hope she is better very soon and they get to the root of it all.

ZigZaggyZoo · 02/12/2020 06:47

Hoping it was lab error and your daughter feels much better soon. Don't blame yourself, you followed all advice- even pushed for her to be seen at the doc Flowers
