Dd14 started with the symptoms of a water infection two weeks ago. After a conversation with the emergency doctor she was prescribed three days work of antibiotics and we were told that of she still had symptoms on the fourth day to contact our gp. I did as the symptoms hadn't lessened. Our gp emailed back to ask us to take her in for a urine dip. This apparently came back clear. That was last Wednesday. Her symptoms have worsened but as we had been told she definitely didn't have a water infection she's been drinking loads of water and taking paracetamol when needed.
The last two days she started with a temp and started being sick. She hasn't eaten since Sunday. This morning I checked her temp and it was 39'
I emailed our gp at 8am. At 10am I rang 111 who told me to take her to the local walk in centre. They initially refused to see her as she had a temp. Once I reinforced that we had been told to attend by 111 they saw her in a side room.
Five minutes later we were told to go to a&e. On arrival at a&e her temp was 40 and didn't come down for a long time after they gave her ibuprofen.
She's now been admitted with a kidney infection and is on iv antibiotics. She can't keep her temp down and isn't eating.
Now I'm worried that I should have been more forceful at the docs when we were told that the test was clear even though she was still having symptoms. I feel like I've messed up.

Thank you. She slept pretty well and doesn't remember most of the meds and obs! I, however, saw all of hers and heard everyone else's!
Hopefully we will get some answers today.

Still not seen anyone yet and she's thrown up the half piece of toast she ate. :(

Can you ask to see her named nurse? Ask whether the repeat blood results are back. Do they do ward rounds? Ask when this is, as they should do a full review with a care plan

KnockThatVolumeDown · 02/12/2020 11:21

Just waiting for the nurse to come back and let us know when she's due more meds. Rounds are happening and heading our way apparently

Don't beat yourself up about it!! I feel like you did the best you could with getting her seen and treated - it's sucks that she's in the hospital now but that's not your fault and she will be ok!!

snapple21 · 02/12/2020 12:04

I bet you're both exhausted. Hope she's feeling better soon.

41weekswithno2 · 02/12/2020 12:25

Glad she slept. Antibiotics always upset my tummy, hopefully she will keep something down later but as long as she's not dehydrated don't worry.
I hope you get some rest at some point.

KnockThatVolumeDown · 02/12/2020 12:38

They've just been round and said they will prescribe something to stop her being sick.
Looks like we will be in for a few more days.

Finally had her anti sickness meds and an ultrasound. Her temp has gone back up to 40 so trying to get that back down :(

Hope she's ok op, and not in too much pain

ZigZaggyZoo · 02/12/2020 16:32

Thinking of you both. Hope the ultrasound results come through quickly. Did you get the 2nd blood results?

HollaHolla · 02/12/2020 16:48

Another one who had a very similar situation at a similar age. Have they checked for stones? Tbf, if they were blocking anything, you’d know all about it.
Good that they let you stay - surprised (pleasantly) that they are allowing it with Covid, and her age. Is she on an child or adult ward?
All you can do us keep going with the treatment. We all feel a bit delicate in these situations, but glad she’s not too poorly, in the grand scheme of things. In my experience of many kidney infections, water and more water is her friend right now.

HollaHolla · 02/12/2020 16:50

Ps. To the previous poster who said about the multiple pregnancy tests, I understand it’s to check for the possibility of an ectopic pregnancy, which can be way way worse than a kidney infection.

Happyheartlovelife · 02/12/2020 17:05

Same thing happened to me

I saw a socialist nephrologist. Who says the antibiotic beginning with T? I forget the name. Is so bad and it’s the go to antibiotic for a urine infection.

I was hospitalised myself. I had a urine infection. Let getting told it was nothing. Left it two weeks. By that time I couldn’t even stand. Was told a week later and I’d of been septic.

They said that her kidneys were clear and her bladder looked good. They showed us her womb and ovaries too which was pretty cool! Bloods wise on the notes it says please ignore previous bloods. On the new ones her infection markers? Are raised. He used a term I don't understand! They've given her something to stop her being sick. She's managed a bit of food. Just hope it stays down now.

@HollaHolla on the children's ward.

By the time my 15yo dd was admitted to hospital with a kidney abscess, she had also been ill for two weeks. I had started to get pushy at about 12 days as I was not happy with dd's recovery. On the ward I asked the paediatrician whether things should or could have been done things, avoiding dd being ill for so long. The consultant reassured me that the GP had followed the correct processes, and had prescribed correctly for dd's symptoms and test results. She also reminded me that dd was now in hospital because I had become pushy at the right time.

Dd made a full recovery, but was exhausted by her illness. She missed a month of school and was only able to do half days for about half a term.

She found the IV very painful when the cannula was sited in her elbow. She said the best location was in her wrist. Completely painless. She even went to school with the cannula in her wrist at one point. You can ask for the cannula to be re-sited if its bothering your dd.

I hope this is reassuring and helpful, and that your dd recovers very soon.

Gunpowder · 02/12/2020 20:53

That sounds like good news about the ultrasound. Ask a friendly nurse for a blanket for yourself for tonight so you don’t get cold again. Hope she starts to feel better soon.

boredasf · 03/12/2020 00:05

I hope she picks up quickly op. It's scary when your child is sick.

Not your fault for not realising earlier, you followed medical advice. I had a urine infection in pregnancy that I didn't know I had until it caused me to go into early labour.

SheilaWilcox · 03/12/2020 00:27

You've got her the help she needs and you're with her. You sound like a great Mum. I hope you manage to get some sleep and that your DD feels better soon.

KnockThatVolumeDown · 03/12/2020 10:13

Thank you everyone you've all really helped. I was thinking last night about it and realised that I had been to the desk a few times to check on when her meds were due and pushed a bit to get the anti sickness meds. I am advocating for her aren't I?
She's had a settled night. Her night nurse spoke to me in the evening and I said she had been back to square one temp wise when they didn't keep on top of the paracetamol and ibuprofen. She was great and did them at regular intervals all night. This morning she has managed a bit of something to eat and isn't anywhere near as warm. I'm hoping We can come home today.

Yes you certainly are!! It sounds really encouraging that she had a settled night and temp coming down. Sending you and your DD all the very best to get well soon!!

KnockThatVolumeDown · 03/12/2020 10:36

Thank you. I'm a bit teary today missing dh and my other children. I had a shower and a good cry last night. I know it's just because I'm tired and I've been on high alert with dd.
She's much more herself today and managed to have a wash and dress herself without having to sit down. She's still a bit dizzy but I'm guessing that's lack of food?
She's still quite weak and goes dizzy getting out of bed so I'm making her do things slowly.
Dh brought her some meditation colouring books in but she couldn't grip the pen properly as the canula is in the back of her right hand.
Think we will stick a programme on her iPad in a minute and watch that together.
Thanks again for the support. You've helped me feel less crap and alone.

How about a lovely Christmas movie together (I can recommend Nativity 1& 2, hilarious) and have a cuddle - I know you said she wasn't keeping much down, could she could drink something? A hot choc maybe?

I remember when I was in hospital years ago with pleurisy and double pneumonia - I was on IV antibiotics, O2, nebulisers and in hospital for 10 days. Even when I went home I was exhausted for weeks and weeks, couldn't dress myself at first, then I could sit up but not stand for long, then couldn't walk far without getting dizzy etc. (These days they'd probably call it long covid!) Fighting infections can just take it right out of you and you need to take it slow to build your strength up after. Your DD is young and will probably bounce back sooner than I did though! My mum and MIL fed me lots of practically Victorian things afterwards to build me back up, blancmange, beef tea, chicken soup, tonics with iron and vitamins etc.

KnockThatVolumeDown · 03/12/2020 14:37

We are home! Thank you all so much for your help.
She's very teary and tired and weak.
Any dos or don'ts? I'm trying to get her to take it slowly because when she's on her pain relief she feels better but when it wears off she's warm and weary.
