Worrying
"Credible threats of violence" have prompted Michigan authorities to close the state capitol to the public and shutter House and Senate offices, a spokeswoman says, on the day the Electoral College will formally declare Joe Biden the President-elect. - CNN

I've never watched the electors cast their votes, so today I am doing so. It feels very personal this year.

Roominmyhouse · 14/12/2020 20:28

It’s absolutely crazy. Loads of people going mad that GOP ‘electors’ aren’t being allowed in to vote in Michigan. Not understanding that those republicans weren’t elected...

It’s worrying how many people are calling for riots and violence too Sad

BruceAndNosh · 14/12/2020 20:33

@Cacacoisfarraige

This EC is reminding me of the Eurovision
"Donn-ahld Troomp.... NULL POINTS"
BruceAndNosh · 14/12/2020 20:38

@AcrossthePond55

On another subject, DH is going mad watching the EC vote 'ticker' on CNN. I keep explaining that a lot of 'Trumpy' states are in EST so their voting will be earlier than ours (CA). But I've finally had to turn it off. He's sure that somehow by 'wicked hook or evil crook' he's going to 'steal' the EC vote. I told him to have a drink (or a spliff) and just relax.

I've opened the ticker on my laptop.

Yes, I guess California's 55 votes will very late.

Most amusing..
"GOP Electors" turned up at Michigan Capitol to 'vote' and were turned away by police at the door and were told "the electors are already here, they've been checked in"
Dangnabbit. If only we'd got that earlier bus, Trump would still be president

chomalungma · 14/12/2020 20:43

It's interesting that 2 States split their electoral college votes.

Nebraska is one of two states that apportions some of its electoral votes based on congressional district. While Trump won the statewide popular vote, Biden won an Omaha-based congressional district by almost seven points. This is the second time Nebraska has ever split its electoral votes — the first time was in 2008 when Barack Obama also won the Omaha district

The whole electoral college system is very strange - compared to the elections we are used to in the UK.

DuncinToffee · 14/12/2020 20:43

Bloomberg
BREAKING: Electoral College members in all six battleground states where President Donald Trump most fiercely contested the results cast their ballots for Democrat Joe Biden, effectively cutting off the president’s path to overturning the election

Meanwhile in Trump world

ZoeTillman @ZoeTillman

New: It appears the Trump campaign has filed another election challenge in federal court, this time in New Mexico — it's objecting to the use of drop boxes for voters to return absentee ballots. It was filed today, as the Electoral College is voting.

The US system was set up in the horse-and-buggy days, and the last major revision was in1870 --- 150 years ago. There is a very readable summary on CNN

TheSilveryPussycat · 14/12/2020 21:05

I am imagining Trump, rather like Across's DH, sitting watching the count and going "See, I'm ahead, so I must have won" then railing "Fraud!" as the remaining votes come in.

AcrossthePond55 · 14/12/2020 21:08

Yes, I guess California's 55 votes will very late.

Our electors meet to vote at 2pm (local) so 5pm EST. That's a little less than an hour from now.

States left to vote are:

Montana 4pm 3 R
Oregon 4.30pm D 7
California 5pm 55 D (this should send Joe over 270)
Hawaii 7pm 4 D

Totals of right now:
CNN, tied at 229 each
270towin Biden 240 Trump 229

Ha Ha! I'd love to be a fly on the WH walls about now. Scrotus must be going berserk and aides are madly trying to distract him with shiny objects to keep him away from his phone.

DH has calmed down and isn't worried that there will be a landslide of 'faithless electors' so we've turned MSNBC back on. I just want to be watching when my state sends Joe over the top.

DGRossetti · 14/12/2020 21:18

The whole electoral college system is very strange - compared to the elections we are used to in the UK.

In some ways the states that split their allocations seem fairer.

The winner takes all approach to elections - in the US and UK - is almost guaranteed to ensure a large proportion of the electorate are ignored. Good breeding grounds for extremism.

Anniegetyourgun · 14/12/2020 21:20

Which was the state where certain Republican activists were quite indignant at being forbidden to put down unauthorised dropboxes during the postal voting phase? Or is my memory doing that thing again...

DuncinToffee · 14/12/2020 21:25

Nevada? Trump has been tweeting some false claims about Nevada tinight

I know it happened in my area (No. California), but I don't think we were the only state it happened in.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 14/12/2020 21:36

240 for Biden and 232 for Trump

The three states remaining are all Biden:

Oregon 7
California 55
Hawaii 4

lionheart · 14/12/2020 21:56

My goodness this election business is a drawn out affair.

Anniegetyourgun · 14/12/2020 22:01

So random partisan drop boxes are OK, and official drop boxes are not OK. Got it.
