Thanks @BruceandNosh for the title.

And still we persist.

[quote chomalungma]If people are interested. this is the docket of the Supreme Court case to be heard on Thursday.

If you want a lay person's translation of that, Brad Heath (Reuters) has got a great twitter thread going.

chomalungma · 09/12/2020 21:45

This guy also has one.

I am not sure if it will even be heard.

BruceAndNosh · 09/12/2020 22:40

It's bonkers.
State A can't sue State B for doing things differently.
What next? Abortion laws, gun laws?

DuncinToffee · 09/12/2020 23:02

CNN
All 50 states and the District of Columbia have certified their presidential results. President-elect Biden is projected to win 306 Electoral College votes.

It is bonkers. This is too (can you imagine a four year Biden Presidency followed by the return of Trump?)

I can't see Trump being able to run again. He'll be 4 years older physically, and 20 years older mentally. I think the effect of finally losing the presidency will tip him over the edge into full blown psychosis.
But I wouldn't put it past one of the Trump spawn to run instead.

lionheart · 10/12/2020 07:47

Trump will be a wreck in four years (more so than now).

Look at Flynn here:

DGRossetti · 10/12/2020 10:03

A very quick skim of the submission to SCOTUS did not reveal any evidence.

It's basically a whinge that because SCOTUS might be able to do something, SCOTUS should.

Very readable analysis of why Texas will get their butt kicked

Ignoring the fact that it would mean 4 more years of trump, but if SCOTUS allowed this to go through at Texas' behest, it would totally fuck up the country

I doubt they will, from reading. But if they do, then plenty of states are ready to sue Alabama to overturn their abortion law, and some of the less progressive environmental states to force them to up their protections.

Which suggests that SCOTUS approach this far - which seems to involve a bargepole you could cross the Mississippi on - might continue and they will toss it out.

If they don't they'll have to do their own fact finding too.

Roominmyhouse · 10/12/2020 13:44

Ughhh I just want this to be over with. Common sense says they should just throw this out. But part of me is still worried trump might get his own way!

Re brexit, it will be interesting to see what influence Bbiden will have

Lewis Goodall has been tweeting about it
I suspect an important player in what happens next isn’t even in Europe. It’s @JoeBiden.

.@SpeakerPelosi has a press conference today- suspect she’ll be asked about it. Her lead will then likely be followed by the President elect, who won’t see this purely as an Irish question (though that is very important to him) but a geopolitical one.

And for Texit, can Nigel bring his good pal Alexander along?

AcrossthePond55 · 10/12/2020 15:32

Another good article that explains the SCOTUS suit in very plain language, the procedures, and possible results. This article finally allowed me to get a hand on exactly what's happening.

www.cnn.com/2020/12/10/politics/trump-texas-supreme-court-election/index.html

Where we are now...SCOTUS has to decide if they're even going to allow the Texas AG to file the suit. Apparently the next 'step' is that the 4 states being 'sued' have until 3pm EST today (Thur) to respond. Then SCOTUS meets (virtually) on Friday to decide whether or not to allow the suit to be filed.

DGRossetti · 10/12/2020 15:34

Re brexit, it will be interesting to see what influence Bbiden will have

He's already having it. There is no way the Uks complete capitulation on the IMB wasn't because Boris knew he couldn't meet Biden until it was history.

That's before you consider that Biden has clearly indicated he has zero time for Boris anyway.

And regardless of how Brexit finally falls (apart) any UK Prime Minister is going to have to meet a POTUS who has been briefed - since 2016 - that Brexit harms the US. There's no way around it.

The interesting thing UK-wise is that Boris is still in thrall to a bunch of ERGers who haven't yet got the memo that there's nothing in the US for them now - not until 2024 at the earliest.

I can actually imagine US encouragement for Irish unification too. Just to stick it to the Brexiteers.

The precedents aren't good for Texas. Seems SCOTUS have done their level best to avoid such suits (because it seems they actually have to then go and research the matter themselves, since they can't rely on one sides evidence).

I can't see them rushing to take this case. And their reasoning will be that each state involved has addressed all the issues in accordance with their own laws and it's up to their legislatures to take it from their supreme courts to SCOTUS, not Texas. Which is in danger of being labelled the Lone (brain) cell State and taken as a compliment.

Texas wants to secede?

Here, Texas, let me help you pack. Do you need a ride to the airport? Shall I pack you a snack? You don't want to be late, maybe you better leave for the airport right now!

Already I suspect the entire episode is being airbrushed from history ..

"Remember that time the UK voted to break an international treaty ?"
"That never happened"

The fuck all comfort for anyone regarding Brexit. However remainers can force a bitter smile as the UK government is forced act as if all those mines they recently cleared the Falklands of were somehow placed around Northern Ireland - at least until 2024.

I don't think there's too much doubt how a President-elect who told the BBC "I'm Irish" and who has personally asked for The Chieftains to play at his inauguration feels about the UK right now. I can't imagine what it will take for us to bring into school for our first day with the new teacher to make them like us. Especially if it's Boris "the racist" Johnson.
