Here it is.
Thanks @BruceandNosh for the title.

And still we persist.

@Mittens030869

Enough influential Republicans have repudiated Trump's claims now, as have Trump supporters in the FBI and Republican governors. They know that if the US allows democracy to be subverted, their international reputation will be in shreds.
er, more shreds ...
Mittens030869 · 09/12/2020 15:51

@DGRossetti That's true, their reputation is very poor as it is. But if they subvert the election, they will never again be able to lecture the rest of the world about democracy. They've always been so proud of their democracy after all.

AcrossthePond55 · 09/12/2020 15:53

@maggiethecat
@CoteFolie

I realize I made a mistake on the lodging of objections, I said 'any member' (singular). The objection must be made in writing and signed by both one Senator AND one House Representative . I think that reduces Scrotus' chances to having an objection lodged (let alone invalidating EC votes by this method) to practically nil. In addition, the objection can be made to the whole EC vote OR the votes of specific electors.

There were objections lodged in both 2000 and 2016, but none of them were upheld. The 2000 was voted down and the 2016 was rejected as it didn't meet the criteria for debate.

As far as maggie's question regarding majority needed to uphold an objection, I can't seem to find an answer. All I read says "they debate and vote" but doesn't specify the needed majority to uphold an objection.

Yeah, that's the bit that really sticks in a lot of peoples craw. And I say that as a subject of the United Kingdom that also likes to lecture rather than practice democracy.

Like all countries the US is a complex beast - admirable and execrable in parts with a solid base of decent compassionate people.

(If my DF had bothered to claim his US citizenship, I'd be American too. Like a lot of Italians ...)

@AskingQuestionsAllTheTime

It is possible that a Trump supporter may also be a decent human being in every other respect, I suppose (in a Quakerish way, since there is that of God in every man).
Oh bless you Asking. You sound just like my wonderful mum. She always insisted there was some good somewhere in the rottenest person. Except for the usual villains like Hitler and Nixon. But even then all she'd do is murmur "If you can't say anything nice....". Although I do remember her saying during Watergate "He is just not a very nice man".

She truly lived by her Christian 'lights'. She has advanced dementia now and I thank God for two things; she was still cognizant when Obama was elected. She was so joyful. And that she was NOT cognizant when Scrotus was elected. She would have been horrified.

My grandad had the privilege of kicking Nixon out of his barber shop back in 1946. Nixon was running for the House against Jerry Voorhis, who was a friend of one of my uncles and whose family were well known local philanthropists. Nixon paid a 'visit' to Grandad's shop and started telling blatant lies about Mr Voohis, upon which Grandad told him to shut up and get the hell out of his shop. Nixon decamped with his tail between his legs.

DGRossetti · 09/12/2020 16:36

This is a lie. Nixon. 1960.

It really is a dumb move to make a stupid lie that will only drag Nixons name (and crimes) into the Twittersphere where your own name is being discussed.

Especially as I'd call Nixon a goddamn traitor.

Trump has declared he will be INTERVENING in the Texas versus Pennsylvania et all SCOTUS bun fight.
I don't think he really understands...

showmethegin · 09/12/2020 16:39

I'm interested to see what happens on Inauguration Day. Trump has been parroting for weeks that it won't get that far but clearly it will.

Reminiscent of those domesday cults that predict the end of the world then are left looking sheepish when nothing happens

Jim Jones sadly springs to mind.

My brain suggested a worse insult than Trump Supporter - Trumpsucker Hmm

Perhaps not.

maggiethecat · 09/12/2020 17:06

Oh you foul mouthed kitty!! Shock

maggiethecat · 09/12/2020 17:39

AcrossThe Pond55 - whatever the majority needed, if more than a simple majority, can't see any objection being upheld in the house.

EveryoneRevealsThemselves · 09/12/2020 18:54

And just as a reminder that the big problem here is the lies that Trump has been feeding the people have power - from a friend of mine:
Ok going to get political but the SUPREME COURT is now involved since 8 states have filed suits that four other ones violated the constitution by making changes to voting laws by circumventing their legislatures. For those who say big deal, that means the elite ruling class can make ANY LAW despite the constitution and basically thrown middle finger to OWN state residents and voters as stating their votes/voices dont matter no matter HOW they vote because THEY will decide what's best. IT BASICALLY means that your governor and judges and state level leaders dont care that citizens votes were either stolen or not counted, that they didn't protect constitutional provided voter rights, that they allowed people ineligible to vote to decide

DuncinToffee · 09/12/2020 18:55

Trump is still tweeting completely imaginary things, and it’s both unhinged and kind of boring.

#crybabyTrump is trending on Twitter

This is all about draining the swamp. Draining the swamp means only having people who agree with Trump and his supporters, in any position of authority, in Washington and elsewhere, particularly in Democratic voting states. Doesn't matter what the Constitution says, as long as Trump refuses to believe it, he is draining the swamp, which is a Good Thing and will Make America Great Again. So there.

Election integrity ad campaign urges conservatives to accept 2020 results.
ctory.

The group has been airing 30-second advertisements on Fox News that prominently feature the words of Trump's own Attorney General Bill Barr assuring that the election was clean -- even as some of the network's hosts continue to sow doubts about the election results.

AcrossthePond55 · 09/12/2020 19:23

I honestly think that HE thinks he can 'intervene' with the SCOTUS. Why wouldn't he? He's been in the quid pro quo and/or blackmail business for decades. He learnt it at his daddy's knee and it's how he's always operated and (apparently) either one or the other has always worked for him in his business life.

I think he's too stupid to understand that 'it doesn't work that way' in the SCOTUS. And if any of his three nominees now on the court promised him it did, then he's been played.

lionheart · 09/12/2020 19:53

For some reason I think it will be like the end of Vernon Scannell's 'Hide and Seek':

'They must be thinking that you’re very clever,
Getting more puzzled as they search all over.
It seems a long time since they went away.
Your legs are stiff, the cold bites through your coat;
The dark damp smell of sand moves in your throat.
It’s time to let them know that you’re the winner.
Push off the sacks. Uncurl and stretch. That’s better!
Out of the shed and call to them: ‘I’ve won!
Here I am! Come and own up I’ve caught you!’
The darkening garden watches. Nothing stirs.
The bushes hold their breath; the sun is gone.
Yes, here you are. But where are they who sought you?'

Another news flash on my phone

The US Attorney in Delaware has launched an investigation into Hunter Biden's taxes. As far as I'm concerned, it's pure vindictiveness. Scrotus and Barr can't possibly think this would stop Joe from being inaugurated, can they/
