Dog on sofa - yes or no vote

Hi - just got a 5 month pup, he's a large breed, so lovely. He's settled brilliantly. Started with basics, house rules and clicker training from the get go. So he's actually doing well and being responsive. He's a clever working breed & livestock guardian.
He's got plenty of outdoor space to access, so his world isn't limited to indoors or the floor space.

Anyways, one thing i cant decide - let him on the sofas or is that an absolute no no?

YABU - let that pup on the sofa
YANBU - pups shouldn't be on sofa

As you can see, mine is never allowed on sofa, or bed!
Previous dogs, Border Collies, never showed any interest in leaving their beds near the Aga.

@letsnotscaretheneighbours

Yes, but then my dogs also have their own double bed as well as use of mine so probably very biased.
This might an outlier! 🙈 I'd like to say I can see it reaching that stage, my guest room is occupied atm anyways....but i also said I'd not let him on the sofa and here I am considering that, so you never know

Most definitely. Excuse the wall. Water leak and insurance company yet to repair!

As long as they are made to make room for humans. I've actually been told by my sister before to sit on the floor as the only space free on the sofa is the dog's space Confused I have her a Hmm look and sat on the sofa anyway. I mean it was rank but I was roving a point Grin

HotPatootiebootie · 01/12/2020 19:44

I have massive throws on my two couches and they are 4 weeks old. I do let all 4 dogs on them because they are my dogs and I love them. They also sleep in my bed. The throws and bedding is cleaned every 3-5 days so I don't see the problem.

LittleGungHo · 01/12/2020 19:49

I was no. However at 18 months we allowed our pup up, by invitation. We put at blanket on the sofa and tap and say 'up' should would not dream of coming up without being invited.
She is not 2 1/2 and come up maybe once a week only.

I would wait until the dog is older.

whatisthepointofatoering · 01/12/2020 20:20

No but I used to. I decided I didn't like the mess and the dust on my sofa. It took some training, and a few additional baskets, but ddog no longer gets on the sofa. For some reason he does get on the end our bed for about hour if you are reading at night, but won't sleep there. He has another basket in our bedroom. He doesn't go on the bed in the day. No access if we are out.

GobletOfIre · 01/12/2020 21:17

Ddog is small and doesn’t shed. He also has his paws wiped after a muddy walk. He’s allowed on the sofa (and snuggles) but not the bed.

LakieLady · 01/12/2020 21:33

Lovely pics and I'm delighted to see that so many dogs have access to sofas!

I used to have a boyfriend who had a whippet. She used to sleep at the bottom of the bed, but under the covers. I never had cold feet in the night all that winter.

I lost my lakeland terrier 4 weeks ago, and really miss her snuggling up.

CockleburIck · 01/12/2020 21:37

I absolutely forbid it Wink

I let farty dh on the sofa so why wouldn't i let less farty dear dog Smile

catsrus · 01/12/2020 22:00

yes, but only when there are throws on it - and they know the commands "move over" and "off". they all seem to like sleeping in MY spot so the "move over" command is the most used.

It's musical spaces anyway because it's a two seater sofa and there are three dogs and me.

Chesneyhawkes1 · 01/12/2020 22:04

@LakieLady I'm so sorry for your loss. I have a little working lakie and they are such characters.

Ihatefish · 01/12/2020 22:10

Our childhood dog also had her own armchair.

Our dog doesn’t shed she’s allowed on the sofa also sleeps on our bed. Basically it’s mumsnet hell in our houseSmile

Baybetterdays · 01/12/2020 22:17

Yes - nothing better than warm cuddles at this time of year, it’s their home too and I’d rather change the sofa tbh...

Felifox · 01/12/2020 22:25

Our dogs never got on the sofa, but would get on the bed. The cats have always got on the sofa as well.

Yes my dog is part of my family. She is a big dog too and loves to be cuddled and stroked A LOT. I'd hate to have to sit on the floor with her every night to spend time with her. she usually lies across my body on her back living the dream each evening.
I have light grey fabric sofas, I have covers down but tbh there's bits of it she lies on and it's still like new.

GlummyMcGlummerson · 01/12/2020 22:32

I'm really not a dog person usually but these pics are absolutely adorable especially @CockleburIck 😍😍😍

errrm - isn't the question whether or not he lets you share?

Tootsietoot · 01/12/2020 22:48

What is the point of a dog if not for the cuddles of love.

dopenguinsdance · 01/12/2020 22:48

No. Of course I'm assuming that you don't walk across your sofa with dirty, muddy shoes, wipe your bum on it, drip blood and mucus on it or scratch it with a garden rake? If you do then you won't mind when the dog does it, so go ahead. Oh. and all dogs shed even those with short coats do do tor that in too.
I speak from experience, with three Danes who would all happily climb on the sofas, preferably on top of a human, were it allowed. Instead they have their own heavy duty thick mattress with removable, washable covers. Important because big dogs are uncomfortable lying on hard ground and will get calloused elbows & sore joints on any hard floor, even carpeted ones

LizzieMacQueen · 01/12/2020 22:55

Yes to sofas but a big fat NO to our beds. Which is odd because our bed sheets get cleaned a heck of a lot more frequently than our sofa.

userxx · 01/12/2020 22:57

@BadEyeBri 🤣🤣

gah2teenagers · 01/12/2020 23:06

@MaskingForIt

My sister’s dog is allowed on their sofa and when she visited she expressed her anal glands on my sofa. Made me glad my dog isn’t a sofa surfer!
Omg. Beyond disgusted. So yes let your dog on the sofa I’d certainly never visit.
