Who's in the wrong?

Person A takes a trolley from Person B outside a shop.
Person A gives Person B £1 for the trolley, then Person B says it was tricky to get the trolley unhooked from the other trollies when they got it.
Person A finishes shopping and the coin won’t come out out of the trolley, because the pin won’t go in properly.
Shop assistant at the door says the trolley has been broken for ages.
Manager refuses to refund Person A the £1 as “when they are busy they get all the broken trollies out” and “people are told to return the broken trolley to them(?)”, although Person A knew nothing of this and Person B didn’t return the trolley either. His stance is that Person B robbed Person A so it's not up to them to refund the money.
Who’s at fault here? Hmm

Supermarkets don't have money in trolleys now!

Yes they do. Aldi do.

Literally every supermarket that I use takes money in their trolleys. I've never see one that doesn't?

Totally missing the point but it's £1 so it's hardly worth all the aggro..Confused

EveryDayIsADuvetDay · 30/11/2020 00:05

Hollowtalk - that's emm hollow talk - they may have suspended it in your area (they did in some supermarkets I use earlier in the year, but most have reintroduced it now I think).

Really depends; who knows whether B actually put money in to release the trolley, or not?

I didn't have a pound coin at the supermarket the other day - grabbed a broken one that didn't need a coin, but someone approached me in the carpark when I was unloading, I just gave them the trolley and refused the coin they proffered - but B could have put a coin in and it was jsut a bit sticky to release.

Neveranynamesleft · 30/11/2020 00:06

The tight manager could just have given the pound back and got the pound out of the trolley later.

Maskedcrusader · 30/11/2020 00:21

Does it really matter for the sake of a quid?

CareBear50 · 30/11/2020 00:24

........and there are babies dying in the world......Grin

MummmyDayCareNameChangeAGAIN · 30/11/2020 00:25

Seriously? Robbed of a pound!! FML!! HAHHAHA.

parietal · 30/11/2020 00:30

abandon the dodgy trolley with the £1 in it in the most inconvenient location possible in the middle of the parking lot so that grumpy manager has to retrieve it.

go home.

papaelf · 30/11/2020 00:32

Person A is BU for not just putting the trolley in the Reilly bay and going home with their shopping.

Cheeseandwin5 · 30/11/2020 01:05

To be honest I think its the supermarkets.
If there was £1 in the trolly when Person A got the trolley of Person B, then that's what was expected.
The fact the Person A couldn't get it out and the Manager wouldn't help is the issue

greenlynx · 30/11/2020 01:11

“ Shop assistant at the door says the trolley has been broken for ages. ”

How does the shop assistant know that it’s this particular trolley? Do their trolleys have number plates on?

mummmy2017 · 30/11/2020 01:16

You have no idea if B put a pound in or not, so you can't say they robbed you.
The Manager could have refunded you and sorted out the problem afterwards, so he is the idiot.

mummysherlock · 30/11/2020 01:21

I would have just left it, I really cannot be bothered to get wound up and argue over a £1 coin.

SingingInTheShithouse · 30/11/2020 01:23

It cost you a pound for a valuable life lesson. Move on

Boobahs · 30/11/2020 01:27

Just to be clear, I didn't ask for the manager. The door assistant saw me struggling with the trolley and came over, because there were other people waiting for trolleys. She then decided to call the manager by herself.

Yes, HE used the words "robbed me" Confused

I actually just packed the shopping in the car and left, so no big scene from me and although I'm aware that's it's only £1, the point is I don't think that they should use trolleys that they know people are going to put money into and not get it back. Regardless of who actually put the coin in in the first place, someone is a quid down.

AryaStarkWolf · 30/11/2020 16:12

Person B was in the wrong but I think for good customer service they should have given you the money back anyway

mummmy2017 · 30/11/2020 16:35

I'm person B, I put the coin in the slot, I gave you a trolley that worked .
The store are lying to you.
They just stole your money.

Runnerduck34 · 01/12/2020 07:36

Annoying but not worth losing sleep over.
How did shop staff know that particular trolly was already broken ?? Dont they all.look the same?? Bad customer service, the shop should have returned the pound and taken trolly out of service.
If someone really didnt put a pound in the trolly they should have just said so and given it away .

Nottherealslimshady · 01/12/2020 07:44

There's no way of knowing the full story, person B could well have put a quid in the trolley. The manager should really have given your money back as they supplied a faulty trolley. The money bit comes off easily so if they're faulty they should remove it.

flaviaritt · 01/12/2020 07:50

101 NOW.

Northofsomewhere · 01/12/2020 08:02

The suggestion of leaving a trolly in the car park unsafely is absolutely ridiculous, it won't be the manager you inconvenience but other drivers and the poor colleague who goes and collects them from the shelters. The manager most certainly isn't the one dealing with the car park or trollies.
I don't think it's a simple as just pulling £1 out of the till as all money needs to be accounted for and particularly where you might have multiple cashiers on a till during the day it could get someone in trouble if the £1 is missing and no one remembers about reimbursement for the trolly. But I also see the other point, to some people £1 will make a difference and if it happens multiple times it can make a difference. Ultimately, I'd leave it because to me £1 isn't that much to lose but it might be the principal.

Cheeseandlobster · 01/12/2020 08:11

Ffs people are so rude on here sometimes. I was on the bones of my arse skint a few years ago when ds was small despite working full time. I couldnt even afford to put money in collections for birthdays at the time and that pound would have made a difference to me. So its all relative.

The supermarket should have refunded the pound without judgement if it was going to be left on their premises
