Person A takes a trolley from Person B outside a shop.
Person A gives Person B £1 for the trolley, then Person B says it was tricky to get the trolley unhooked from the other trollies when they got it.
Person A finishes shopping and the coin won’t come out out of the trolley, because the pin won’t go in properly.
Shop assistant at the door says the trolley has been broken for ages.
Manager refuses to refund Person A the £1 as “when they are busy they get all the broken trollies out” and “people are told to return the broken trolley to them(?)”, although Person A knew nothing of this and Person B didn’t return the trolley either. His stance is that Person B robbed Person A so it's not up to them to refund the money.
Who’s at fault here? Hmm

We have a trolley like this in the shop I work in. There's been a £1 stuck in there for 4+ years. Almost on a weekly basis we get someone saying 'my £1 won't come out' and trying to get us to give them one from the till. 😆

This shit wouldn't happen in Waitrose. Lesson learned

Sorry but you really need to get out more. I know it's hard what with lockdown and everything, but you know things are really bad for you when this becomes the main event of the day.

Perhaps take your own advice...?

For some people this would actually be a problem. Maybe losing the £1 wasn't a huge deal for the OP, but it would be for a lot of people. That's a bottle of milk, two loaves of cheap bread, three packs of pasta. People on here really need to get out of their own little bubble at times and realise that a quid to some people really means having to argue with the staff at supermarkets.

I'm more shocked you could be bothered to write a post about £1

Calmandmeasured1 · 01/12/2020 11:50

Neither A not B are at fault. The manager should have refunded you.

Calmandmeasured1 · 01/12/2020 11:53

There are many people who are furloughed, have lost jobs, are on UC for whom £1 could make a difference so I don't think it is helpful to pile on and say "it's only £1". Remember we don't know people's circumstances.

Honestly it’s £1 try not to let it get to you, it’s really not worth it.

MAK93 · 01/12/2020 12:13

I understand what you’re saying but if £1 makes such a huge difference, I would stop paying for WiFi &/or phone contracts..

And there goes someone with no awareness. Universal Credit has to be claimed online for a start, homework often needs to be done online too. Libraries are currently closed so not an option and even pre 2nd lockdown, the computers were no longer able to be hired at my local library Being skint is not always about spending money on the wrong things

You'd just stop paying for your WiFi or phone? I'm sure those who expect you to oblige your contract would be thrilled with that. Its so easy just to stop paying for household bills when you suddenly find yourself short, isn't it Hmm.

A lady once gave me her trolley and I gave her a pound.

When I went to put the trolley back at the end of my shop, I saw there was never any money inside it.

She definitely robbed me of my £1! Still feel annoyed to this day!

eaglejulesk · 01/12/2020 18:56

Thank you for your explanations about the money in the trolley - I had heard of it before and wondered.

Where I live - if we leave the trolleys outside a supermarket employee puts them back in their place!

Maybe the old lady genuinely forgot she had put money in it? She was probably in the shop a while and just thought the pound was in it? Distracted? I guess I'm sticking up for short term memory loss which I get from time to time! It might not have been intentional! I try to avoid shops that have these trollies as I just find it a faff and even had ones that wouldn't click back or got stuck etc. it is annoying losing a quid especially if I've had to pay to park too!
wirldsgonemad · 01/12/2020 19:36

The person not the company is at fault. But it's only £1!!

Boobahs · 01/12/2020 21:56

Just checked back on this thread, these replies have entertained me no end!

Just some points to clarify...

Nobody stood arguing over it. Person B obviously left after handing over the trolley.

I didn't ask for the manager, the shop assistant called him as she saw me struggling with the trolley.

I'm lucky enough that losing a quid is actually not a big deal for me, but for some people it could be.

I only posted on here to get a group opinion on whose fault it was deemed to be, as I was bored, you know lockdown and all that.

Someone did lose a pound. Whoever put their pound in that broke the trolley did. And I did.

OP posts:
Boobahs · 01/12/2020 21:59

Oh and I actually use a token, but as I approached Person B, she said she had put money in so I had to find a pound as it was the only trolley there. She did attempt to attach the trolley to the chain as I stood there so I don't think she was planning to con me.

I never used the words "robbed me", the manager actually said that.

The COVID police haven't spoken up yet about the unsanitised trolley or pound coin
