after a long, stressful cold day what is your ultimate fav comforting food? mine has to be milky coffee with seeded white lightly toasted bread smothered in melted flora ... your suggestions?

Haven't got the ingredients, but am planning to!

perhaps you're right about it not being particularly indulgent, but now I think about it it goes back to when I was 14.
I had an eating disorder and completely cut out carbs and fats like butter, until one day I was exercising heavily in an attempt to burn off extra calories and fainted in public. My mother was so devastated and implored me to eat some toast (just because it was the easiest and quickest thing to make at the time). That first bite of hot buttery toast was completely gorgeous to me and now whenever I eat toast that comforted feeling comes flooding back.
I don't know if this sounds strange and convoluted but there we go!

Aw @teaandtoast49 I'm glad to hear you were able to eat the toast! And that (presumably) you got past the ED.
Winter comfort food for me, oh so many things! A good home-made soup like minestrone or carrot and lentil. Fish pie (having that tonight). Steak and mushroom pie (had that last night). Sausage and haricot casserole in the slow cooker. Something with a jacket potato.
