Why do so many posters on here seem to be struggling to accept that the U.K. doesn’t just include England?

And that we have different rules regarding Covid?

Over the last couple of weeks I’ve seen so many comments from posters asking rather aggressively why others posters are still meeting up, going for meals, to the pub, for drinks, to the gym etc ‘when we are in lockdown’? Well actually no, England is in lockdown. I’m in Wales and we are not in lockdown. Scotland is not in lockdown. I believe Northern Ireland wasn’t but is about to go back into it. The U.K. doesn’t begin and end at the borders of England...

I’ve just seen one thread where a poster continually pointed out she was in Scotland but that didn’t stop the ‘ we are in lockdown’ remarks.

Please educate yourselves. It’s annoying.

@covidnomore, so tell them not to be an ignorant twat? It's not like there's any excuse. Even if someone has never left their home town, there's google and common sense.
I could say I'm fed up with being labelled ignorant and being treated as if I am personally and solely responsible for the shitty actions of the English government towards the other countries of the UK.
Swings and roundabouts, really.

Sparklingbrook · 30/11/2020 18:04

There is now a thread in Site Stuff suggesting an optional country flag next to our usernames.

Covidnomore · 30/11/2020 18:06

Mumble i do.

But unless you are a non English Brit you probably wouldn't even notice when it does happen.

Of course not everyone in England is ignorant but there are a few.

Its not your fault, and its not my fault, but some people are incredibly ignorant and self aborsbed.

But no one is personally blaming you. You seem to be taking offence for no reason.

It’s amazing the amount of large companies that don’t know the difference between England and the UK. The amount of emails I received from the likes of Papa Johns telling me not to worry the UK was in Lockdown I could still order Pizza. When I am very much in the UK and not in lockdown .

MumbleBee20 · 30/11/2020 18:16

To be fair, @covidnomore, there's a few too many. It makes me cringe and I do call them out on it. Maybe that's why i get a bit offended when I'm automatically grouped together with them.

The mentally that Scotland is a region of England

mayaknew · 30/11/2020 18:19

WTF Scotland is not a region of England

Bloodypunkrockers · 30/11/2020 18:20

The mentality that there's any "English government"

Covidnomore · 30/11/2020 18:21

Mumble I live in England and normally get really irritated by many of the anti English posts I have seen.

But this is not one of them, as it happens and it happens quite a lot.

JacobMarley · 30/11/2020 18:23

“Ooooh do I not have to pay tax because I'm not in London or England? I wish someone had enlightened me before”

Crikey! Me too 😳

MumbleBee20 · 30/11/2020 18:24

I don't just mean on here, @Rhine. I get why the other nations would be angry at the government. I get why they would be angry with the people who seemingly forget they even exist. But you can't deny that posts like these bring out all the people waiting for a chance to berate 'the English.' We're not all up our own arses and blind to the wider world.

You can say, no one said all English, but the undertones of all the posts says differently. It doesn't need spelling out and it is just as ignorant the ones you are complaining about.

Sarahandduck18 · 30/11/2020 18:25

MN is very anti rUK to the point of xenophobia.

The vitriol against the Scottish independence movement is a prime example.

OchonAgusOchonO · 30/11/2020 18:26

@LoveandHateWhatABeautifulComb

You're not paying attention. This is about geography, not identity.

NI people can feel as Irish as they like, but NI is in the UK, and Ireland is not. Therefore, do not ever refer to Ireland as a component of the UK. if you mean NI, say NI. Ireland is a distinct and separate entity that is not interchangeable with NI.

This is not opinion, it is fact, and you don't get to disagree.

I think perhaps it is you who is not paying attention. You seem to be conflating the words "Ireland" and "Irish".

The sentence we are disagreeing on is: I find most English people give no shuts about whether someone is English, Welsh, Irish or Scottish

Certainly, if that poster had used the words England, Wales, Ireland and Scotland, you would have a valid point with which I would agree, but they didn't. Yes, NI is in the UK but a large percentage of its population is Irish and it is not for you to deny them their nationality.

I can assure you I have never referred to Ireland as being part of the UK. I am Irish and get as annoyed as the next Irish person when people do that. However, as an Irish person, I will also stand up for the rights of people in NI to claim their Irish nationality.

MumbleBee20 · 30/11/2020 18:29

@bloodypunkrockers if that's aimed at me, I just thought it was easier than saying the corrupt government that let's all other nations think they are making their own rules, but have the last say in pretty much everything 🤷‍♀️

MumbleBee20 · 30/11/2020 18:31

@covidnomore I agree the opening post wasn't, but some of the ones that followed certainly are.

MythsandSparkles · 30/11/2020 22:01

I think it’s because most English people don’t actually see any difference between English, Welsh, Scottish, Northern Irish - if BA was the kit sponsor for Wales and they’d tweeted “Good Luck Wales” then I’m pretty sure there wouldn’t have been the same national outrage that Wales had over the reverse.

Whereas (in my experience, 7 years living in Wales) everything seems to revolve being “not English”. There’s many many years of historical angst between the internal countries of the U.K. that most English people aren’t aware of/don’t care about.

I was genuinely surprised at the vitriol directed towards England when I first moved to Wales - especially around Rugby, most English in my experience will cheer for the home (U.K.) nation if England isnt playing - the Welsh will cheer for anyone who isn’t England, and not in a joking way.

So when someone says “oh you know what I mean, it doesn’t matter ” when corrected for referring to England as the U.K. they actually mean it doesn’t matter - because they can’t imagine why it would cause offence.

I do think it’s fighting a numbers game on here given the large majority of regular posters seem to be based in England and if your location is relevant to the advice you need - then it should be stated - whether that’s England, Scotland or Australia.

derxa · 30/11/2020 22:23

I hate 'King of England' with a passion

TikTokFinger · 30/11/2020 22:26

Try being Ireland. Most people in the UK don’t actually realise that it’s not in the UK.

Bloodypunkrockers · 30/11/2020 22:41

Me too

And the theme to Dads Army. My black watch grandfather used to get very annoyed

You don't get it. You just really don't get it. You are a lost cause and you are the problem!
Covidnomore · 30/11/2020 22:45

Oh and trust me - as a Scot living in England, they most definitely do see the difference, hence lots of wee comments here and there.

Nicknacky · 30/11/2020 22:48

As an aside I was raging when I ordered furniture and I was charged £25 delivery as I was in the highlands.

I’m south of Glasgow in a major town!!!

But to that company Scotland = highlands.

Wbeezer · 30/11/2020 23:06

I dislike comments from English people complaining about rUK sports fans not supporting English teams, do they not understand the dynamics of team loyalty and rivalry at all, the very thing that makes team sport exciting. Would you expect Liverpool fans to cheer on Man U in the cup final? No, so don't expect Scottish fans to cheer on England. Not such a big deal in individual sports so you won't find Scottish people watching the Olympic athletics hoping Jessica Ennis trips up but any team sport involving balls is another matter. And as for cricket... Mega yawn...

Don’t forget that Andy Murray is British when he is winning and Scottish when he is losing 🙄
