Why do so many posters on here seem to be struggling to accept that the U.K. doesn’t just include England?

And that we have different rules regarding Covid?

Over the last couple of weeks I’ve seen so many comments from posters asking rather aggressively why others posters are still meeting up, going for meals, to the pub, for drinks, to the gym etc ‘when we are in lockdown’? Well actually no, England is in lockdown. I’m in Wales and we are not in lockdown. Scotland is not in lockdown. I believe Northern Ireland wasn’t but is about to go back into it. The U.K. doesn’t begin and end at the borders of England...

I’ve just seen one thread where a poster continually pointed out she was in Scotland but that didn’t stop the ‘ we are in lockdown’ remarks.

Please educate yourselves. It’s annoying.

Aren't they just the same as last time @savethewales?
Except that there will be more in tiers 2 and 3 this time. Only Cornwall, the Isle of Wight and the Scillies will be tier 1.
All of South Yorkshire, where we are will be tier 3 again.

StealthPolarBear · 29/11/2020 21:22

Oh brilliant. No doubt that'll be us.

Ginfordinner · 29/11/2020 21:25

Full list of tiers here @StealthPolarBear

StealthPolarBear · 29/11/2020 21:28

I know at the moment we're moving into tier three. If these rumours about a fourth tier are correct we'll be in it no doubt.

savethewales · 29/11/2020 21:32

So will we! Although our cases are a lot less than London, funny how it all pans out!

lyralalala · 29/11/2020 21:34

There’s rumour of a fourth tier - very very high perhaps!

DH's Granny, who has no filter sometimes (think it's due to the dementia which is there, although she's on the ball sometimes still), suggested that the highest tier should be called "the really fucking bloody high tier" Grin

Haha love it. ‘You’re all fucked tier’ and that’s when they’ll send in the zombies and leave us to it!
CountFosco · 29/11/2020 21:36

As a child/teen I struggled to know the difference between England, Britain, Great Britain, UK (United Kingdom). I thought it was all one and the same thing. I think a lot of people still do.

Said no Scot, Welsh or Northern Irish person ever Hmm.

Ginfordinner · 29/11/2020 21:38

The tiers are based on hospital admissions. Our numbers are coming down significantly, but with so many hospital staff self isolating at our local hospital and high numbers of admissions I can see why we are in tier 3.

Sadly, a good friend of mine has covid, and she's pretty sure she caught it at work. She works in a small supermarket and the numbers of non mask weareers who cough without covering their mouths is frightening.

Butchyrestingface · 29/11/2020 21:39

@Rhine, you must be used to it by now though, surely?

I lived abroad as a child in the 1980s and we were always being asked when we were "going back to England for a holiday". My parents were asked if they'd like to join the Conservatives Abroad Association. A pair or Scots/Irish Catholics - is it likely?? Grin

StealthPolarBear · 29/11/2020 21:39

Dh and I have been watching forged in fire. When they send the zombies in, as long as we get about four hours notice (five including time to fire up the barbecue) we'll be fine making our throwing knives and swords.

blubberyboo · 29/11/2020 21:53

@Welcometonowhere

It’s similar in Northern Ireland, scifi, but not quite as drastic. I think the cutoff is 31 July (any northern Irish mnetters who can confirm?) so an august born child will be the very oldest

In Northern Ireland the school cut off date is 1st July so a child born 2nd July would be the oldest in the year

blubberyboo · 29/11/2020 21:55

Therefore 2nd July through to end August born are already 5 years old when they start primary 1

blubberyboo · 29/11/2020 21:59

@NiceandCalm

I'll probably be shot but I think if you come from Wales, Scotland or Ireland - just bloody say so

Yeah sadly this highlights the total ignorance displayed about other UK regions when English people can’t even get the bloody name right, much less learn the differences

Ireland isn’t in the UK
Northern Ireland is

If you get mixed up, it is written on the front cover of your passport

oneglassandpuzzled · 29/11/2020 22:07

And a tangential point to remind people that the ‘Great’ in Britain originated in the sense of it being the largest island. Not the best. I’ve been accused of indirectly claiming this, as a Brit 😄

Savourysenorita · 29/11/2020 22:18

So it's OK to start a thread bashing the English yet if an English person dared to start a thread in negative spirits about a whole nation e. G Scots, Welsh... Wowza.. Firstly itd be taken down and secondly the op would be attacked viciously. It's not OK to attack 'majorities' either. Most people recognise what beautiful countries are in the UK and of course it isn't just England! But as a poster further up thread mentioned because England makes up the majority of the UK it can be a natural default mentality to assume a poster is in England. It's neither right nor wrong but happens all the time. What's the first country that springs to mind when you say 'Europe' its not Latvia or Estonia is it? It'll likely be Germany or France. Do you see? It's just the way it is. It doesn't mean Wales Scotland and Northern Ireland are less important.

MindyStClaire · 29/11/2020 22:37

If 4/5 of the population of the UK are in England, that means one in five posters from the UK on here aren't in England. Add in all of the international posters, and it's not a small fraction by any stretch. Which is why the "BUT WE'RE IN LOCKDOWN!!!!" posts bewilder me. What's more likely - that the poster has found a restaurant that's opening illicitly or whatever, or that they're somewhere with different restrictions.

Butchyrestingface · 29/11/2020 22:42

Why haven't you added England in there? Shouldn't people from England say they're from England too?

Loads of xenophobic posts attacking ireland/Irish on here. Mn occasionally respond but generally ignore the xenophobic comments. No reason why the English should be treated any better.

Don't see how starting a thread complaining that people assume everyone on here is English is bashing the English.

Where is anyone ‘bashing’ the English?

YABU we don’t view it to be England only London

BashfulClam · 29/11/2020 23:22

I did actually correct someone on the day England began lockdown when they posted on Facebook ‘ok well the UK is back in lockdown!’ No it isn’t just one part.

I remember a poster being my accused of being a troll as she says her children were at school in August. Scotland has different holidays ffs!

The most ridiculous was when someone was told not to bother buying shoes for her son during the first lockdown due to the extremely hot weather. They were in the far south and in Scotland it was raining and struggling to get into double figures. Also the poster who felt sorry for Scottish kids back at school in extreme heat and suggested we change our education system. She was told that it was really ok as 17c and drizzle wasn’t too hot.

NiceandCalm · 30/11/2020 00:42

Should have put Northern Ireland not Ireland. Apologies.

Piggybacking on this to point out that the term British Isles is very controversial and not recognized by the Irish Government. On fact it's been formally disavowed...not related to your point I know but I see it used all the time here and it always gets on my tits.
