Why do so many posters on here seem to be struggling to accept that the U.K. doesn’t just include England?

And that we have different rules regarding Covid?

Over the last couple of weeks I’ve seen so many comments from posters asking rather aggressively why others posters are still meeting up, going for meals, to the pub, for drinks, to the gym etc ‘when we are in lockdown’? Well actually no, England is in lockdown. I’m in Wales and we are not in lockdown. Scotland is not in lockdown. I believe Northern Ireland wasn’t but is about to go back into it. The U.K. doesn’t begin and end at the borders of England...

I’ve just seen one thread where a poster continually pointed out she was in Scotland but that didn’t stop the ‘ we are in lockdown’ remarks.

Please educate yourselves. It’s annoying.

To be far, this could be avoided by op's stating their location (everyone, including those in England). I've lost count of how many times people have asked for advice, not just for covid but also legal stuff etc. Then mentioning several pages in that they're in a different location, so non of the advice given applies.

LouScot · 29/11/2020 13:53

Yip..can only agree @Rhine.. We get pretty used to it, but still doesn't stop us shouting at the BBC news Grin

OwlBeThere · 29/11/2020 13:53

YANBU. most mumsnetters barely seem to realise the U.K. includes more than London. Most English people seem to think England and the U.K. are interchangeable. I pointed this out to a man recently and he called me Fucking cunt for the audacity of being Not English. GrinHmm

Mrsjayy · 29/11/2020 13:57

This isn't new some people honestly can't see past the south east of England it is very frustrating.saying that op I'm in a local lockdown area of Scotland so you know some of Scotland is in A lockdown Wink

Wow, he called you a ‘fucking cunt’ for point out the obvious?! It’s true and, I don’t think a lot of English people realise how small minded they are about the U.K. as a whole. They don’t see the bias in reporting over sporting events for example (international football and rugby competitions being the main culprit).

I agree with this ^^

Well I got accused of xenophobia on a thread yesterday by a nutter who felt I couldn’t possibly deduce that the majority of posters on a UK based website, and specifically those posting about English law might be British!

Sparklingbrook · 29/11/2020 14:00

I assume if posters are moaning about people doing something they shouldn't they are in an area where that something isn't currently allowed.

That said I am quite close to hiding the whole Coronavirus topic.

OwlBeThere · 29/11/2020 14:02

@ForeverBubblegum but even when you say you aren’t in England people don’t listen. Or if you point out when someone says England that they really mean U.K./Britain you get dismissed with ‘oh you know what I mean’ as if it’s unimportant. It’s not unimportant.

PicsInRed · 29/11/2020 14:06

Because the rules are so intentionally nebulous that no one even knows their own rules, let alone the rules of the next county, certainly let alone the rules of another country.

It's a total shitshow. That's why.

Ifailed · 29/11/2020 14:08

probably because England accounts for over 4/5 of the UK population.

This!

I pointed out that not all of the UK were currently in lockdown on a thread and got told to stop being so pedantic. 🙄

SuitedandBooted · 29/11/2020 14:10

I'm Welsh, but currently living in England.

When English people say "England", they often really mean the UK.

When the rest of us (Welsh, Scots Irish) say "England" we mean just that, only England.

T'was ever thus...

Dishwashersaurous · 29/11/2020 14:16

Well of the 66 million people in the UK, over 56 million live in England.

Therefore the majority of people live in England and it is a sensible assumption to make.

If someone is not in the majority position, same as living overseas when this is a UK site, it makes sense to include location in first sentence

nibdedibble · 29/11/2020 14:18

When I moved from Scotland to England it was explained to me:

The other 3 countries are regions. If you’re from Dorset you’re probably not interested in how Cumbria is running itself, same with Scotland. Wales and NI.

That was pre-devolution but I think it’s probably still true. England is well known for being inward looking and not much educated on what goes on around it.

‘This is a U.K.’ site. Yes it is and Wales and Scotland and Northern Ireland are also part of the U.K. This attitude is precisely why the other home nations get so hacked off with the English...

Sadly its not just people on MN who cannot recognise that England is not the whole of the UK. This government struggled to remember this as well, even though there are Tory MPs in Wales and Scotland, and they are the Conservative and Unionist party.

Dishwashersaurous · 29/11/2020 14:23

I was making two separate points.

One that in the UK the vast, vast, majority is England.

Two, that also people not in the UK should state that they are not in the UK.

So just because the majority are in England that makes it ok to forget we all exist?

I'm in England and agree with you it's annoying enough when ,posters seem to assume that everyone lives in London or the South east ,so it must be doubly annoying for posters who live in Wales , Scotland etc

Dishwashersaurous · 29/11/2020 14:29

No.

But if you are posting about something that the current restrictions have an implication for, it makes sense to state your location before asking for advice

This kind of comment completely proves the ops point.

British Airways forgot this yesterday when wishing the English rugby team good luck in their game against Wales.

Sorry OP you've just shown off equal ignorance. "Scotland is not lockdown" Well parts of Scotland are actually in lockdown. We have a different tier system to England. eg I am in Level 4 area. no gyms, pubs, restaurants, non essential shops open. Its even against the law to travel outside your own local authority area. No households to meet inside other's homes. etc etc and it will be like this until at least 11th December. Different rules for different levels.

There hopefully I have educated you a bit.
