MN obsessions

Why is MN obsessed with fluffy socks, why not just socks?

Also see new pyjamas, posh chocolate, warm coats, good quality yet inexpensive anything.

Can we use some new adjectives.

I miss when the only thing naice was ham.

People writing scripted responses as a solution for the OP to memorise and recite.

Said script is usually written in some turgid bellicose nauseatingly smug style where you get the impression the author is chuckling away to herself at her own wit and brilliance as a wordsmith where in actual fact a dog shitting a bag of scrabble tiles across the lawn would provide more entertaining reading.

I laughed.

People on mumsnet who feel the need to correct how others talk. I'm not the brightest and it shows in how i speak on here. My grammar and punctuation is shit, the words i use are shit. It does bother me, I will do something about it. But why do some people think it's okay to embarrass you because of this? Mumsnet is the absolute worst for this, if you have an opinion different to someone elses? Someone a lot brighter and more literate then you swoops in and trys to belittle you. Awful thing to do.

Bitcherama · 03/12/2020 18:21

Oh yeah, the claim that Mumsnet is witty. The odd post is brilliant but really, it's not a witty place.

NuniaBeeswax · 03/12/2020 18:38

"Oh yeah, the claim that Mumsnet is witty. The odd post is brilliant but really, it's not a witty place."

What are you talking about? "Did you mean to be so rude" is the zenith of cutting put downs. Especially when accompanied by a "tinkly laugh".

Oh God, I do this regularly (point out bad grammar, I mean) Blush
This post has actually made me stop and think.

Redolent · 03/12/2020 19:15

An obsession with finding something offensive in the OP. Anything, the tiniest thing, that could reveal the OP’s prejudices, invalidate her feelings of hurt and show her to be a hypocrite.

Recent example:

OP recounts distressing tales of racism against her by a certain individual

Why did you mention she’s a single mum? Prejudiced yourself much?
Hmm

WinterWhore · 03/12/2020 20:30

@Bluesheep8 I'm glad it has to be honest. It really is such a horrible feeling when someone does this. My school life wasn't the best and it impacted my education immensely. Then when someone takes the piss on here it makes me feel like I'm back at school

It doesn't make them brighter, just twats 🤷‍♂️

IToldYouIWantedTheUnicorn · 03/12/2020 21:48

@Bluesheep8 how could you possibly ever have thought that correcting peoples' grammar was a nice thing to do? You must be very unaware of other peoples' feelings if it's needed a post on here saying it's hurtful to make you realise it.

PrancersgotnothingonPortia · 03/12/2020 22:08

I'm really angry that WinterWhore has been made to feel as she does, that's bloody awful!
How dare people make a poster feel like that
Disgraceful behaviour!
Mind you when the grammar police make a post criticising others then make errors themselves they usually get their well deserved come uppance.

draughtycatflap · 03/12/2020 22:28

All the Grimmers on MN make me laugh.

lemonsquashie · 03/12/2020 22:36

Can somebody please explain:

What on Earth is all the Dp DH Dc DM, DD DS all about?

And I've now seen DDog!!!

Also, AF makes me want to hurl

Asking for an friend Smile

Charcutaria · 03/12/2020 22:42

When a poster realises that she has been guilty of online behaviour that has made someone feel awful, and admits that she has had a rethink. Another completely unrelated poster has to put the boot in. Give that repentant poster a good kicking, go on, make her feel worse.
That's one of the worst obsessive behaviour on MN. Anonymous keyboard warriors who feel that they have right to vent their spleen on anyone and everybody.

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 03/12/2020 22:49

Really? Just Wow. Oh, well - you be you, then.

This is brilliant, but to be truly Mumsnet I must announce that I've flooded the whole neighbourhood with the amount of tea I have just spat out due to hysterical laughter. Wink

Financial Abuse if your DH doesn't split every single penny with you yet you are advised to have a "running away" fund.

Absolutely. I'm an English language teacher and would never, ever correct somebody on here.

It's a mam forum, not an academic essay.

It's one of the nastiest things that happens all too regularly. And the people that do it, (whose English is invariably far from perfect) if called out, try the "well, I'd want to know if I made mistakes". Really? You'd want to publicly have the piss taken out of you and told off as if you were four?

Okay then. I'll get my red pen out and roll my sleeves up. Because in all these years I've yet to find someone correcting another person's grammar who hasn't made at least one themselves. Usually more, because unlike real grammar pedants, they don't know nearly as much as they think they do.

Yep, happens all the time!

Ginfordinner · 06/12/2020 09:01

University snobbery. Some posters seem to think that any university that isn't in the top 5 isn't worth applying to, and a small minority thinks that anything other than Oxbridge is beyond the pale.

ItsALovelyDayToday · 06/12/2020 11:48

Middle names. No one cares what anyone’s middle name is. It’s rarely used or mentioned. But on every baby name thread there are all these options, agonising over which to choose.

Daisy Rose
Daisy May
Daisy Brooklyn
Daisy Geronimo

And then the opinions! Ooh, Daisy Brooklyn is less classic-sounding than Daisy Rose etc etc. Like anyone will ever call them that.

I obviously don’t mean hyphenated first names like Daisy-May etc.

This. There was a post a while back where the OP listed five unis her child was considering and asked for opinions. All in the top 40, but none from the top 20. Well, you can imagine the responses! Quite pissed me off actually.
SlightlyJaded · 06/12/2020 16:08

A&E

OP: My finger is a bit sore
Mumsnet" A&E. NOW!

Ginfordinner · 06/12/2020 16:13

Middle names can come in very useful @ItsALovelyDayToday. DD spent a lot of time in our local children's hospital when she was a baby. During one stay there were two little girls on the ward with the same name and surname. I commented on it to the nurse, and she replied "this is where having a middle name comes in useful".
