To expect quality street tins to have roughly equal amounts of each sweet?

Allthequalitystreet · 27/11/2020 19:51

I have just opened a 2kg tin and found it had 26 coconut, 25 fudge, 25 toffee penny. 8 green triangle. 8 purple one. 9 orange crunch etc.

To me that's not an acceptable mix in a tin marketed as an assortment with each sweet shown with equal weighting on the side of the tin.

AIBU?

In addition, if you have a new tin yourselves and are willing to count, please post what proportions you've got.

I am sure loads of you will be tempted to post that iabu for liking quality street at all but a) it's that smell of christmas when you open the tin and b) not the point of the thread.

TIA

Not orange or strawberry creams Shock

HilaryBriss · 27/11/2020 19:53

I haven't got any so can't check but my experience is always that you hardly get any of the nice ones (green triangle, orange crunch) but always get loads of the nasty ones (coconut).

WitchesSpelleas · 27/11/2020 19:55

The coconut ones and toffee pennies always get left in our house, so that mix would be rubbish for us.

Lockheart · 27/11/2020 19:55

It's always like that, this shouldn't be a surprise to you.

namochangoro · 27/11/2020 19:55

25 fudge! Why haven't the tins we got had that? But then again it's all our of our favourite one in this house...🤔

Subordinateclause · 27/11/2020 19:55

There do always seem to be toffee pennies left at the end, but I always assumed that was because no one ate them. I wonder if they're the cheapest to make.

FredtheFerret · 27/11/2020 19:55

I'd be extremely pissed off with that, and it's put me off getting a tin of Quality Street to be honest. As you say, it represents childhood Christmasses to me.

I like the soft centres, so I'd be really unhappy with that.

LauraAshleySofa · 27/11/2020 19:59

I love toffee pennies and fudges, they're the very best.

Not opening our tin up until Xmas eve so not participating in the survey but don't you underestimate those sugary delights, they're all delicious!

x2boys · 27/11/2020 20:01

I like the coconut ones and I'm not keen on soft centres, but yes those bloody toffee pennies who likes them?

PeggyMoo · 27/11/2020 20:02

Is it done by weight? Can you weigh them and check the proportions?!

Albuswulfricbriandumbledore · 27/11/2020 20:03

Yes the toffees and fudge are the cheapest to make. But get in touch with them and I'm sure they'll help you out 🙂

aidelmaidel · 27/11/2020 20:05

Do they still have those repellent peanut things? Have gone expat and haven't had a tin of QS in years, but there were always far too many toffees and not enough orange creams even twenty years ago. Not good enough.

Singlebutmarried · 27/11/2020 20:05

I’m mostly passed off no one does coffee cremes anymore.

Sweetooth92 · 27/11/2020 20:06

What is wrong with you all?!
Where’s the toffee penny love?!
The fingers and toffee pennies are up there with the best ones! Add the chocolate chunk, green triangle, purple one, and those dark brown wrapper toffees and that’s the perfect box. No need for the soft centres or the rank fudge 🤢

BeneficiaryMadness · 27/11/2020 20:06

Every year we open our various tubs celebration/heroes/quality street, sort all the sweets into rows, from most to least, then tweet the manufacturer to tell them how disappointed we are 😀

CoRhona · 27/11/2020 20:07

Completely unreasonable. I love the coconut ones...

happylittlechick · 27/11/2020 20:07

My husband was going to buy a bespoke box for me. Half green triangles. Quarter strawberry cream. Quarter orange cream. Decided it was cheaper to get three boxes to make my box and gift the remaining two. I've ended up with 12 triangle. Out of 3boxes. 12!!!!!

TheKeatingFive · 27/11/2020 20:09

Absolutely unacceptable OP. I’m furious on your behalf.

My ‘get extremely rich’ business idea is to set up a website to facilitate swapping of chocolates you don’t want. So I send you my toffee penny’s and you send me your orange creams.

Probably not very attractive post Covid though.

Lockheart · 27/11/2020 20:09

It's not about price or weight. It's about type and calorific content.

You should have broadly equal amounts of each of the three types: chocolates, toffees / fudges, and cremes.

There are only two cremes so you always seem to get a lot of the strawberry and orange cremes.

But there are lots of chocolates which is why you get fewer of each.

Additionally, purple and green ones are higher in calorific content and the manufacturers have to adhere to certain nutritional guidelines so they can't stuff the tins with the high calorie ones. They need to keep more lower calorie sweets in to keep the overall tin in regulation.

As I said, they have always been like that.

If you don't like it you can always do the pick and mix ones online from their website.

When my kids were about 8 and 5 I gave them a bag of Swizzels mixed chews to keep them quiet on a long car journey. It only contained one Refresher which caused sibling strife. I was so fed up with them moaning I told them to write and complain. DD wrote a letter which I then had to send. Bless Swizzels they sent them a box with about 3kg of sweets in. You might want to get your kids to write to Quality Street Wink

22Giraffes · 27/11/2020 20:09

Yanbu at all, there is never enough strawberry cremes! Toffee pennies and coconut can do one

Allthequalitystreet · 27/11/2020 20:11

I have complained to Nestle and got a truly rubbish response that did not really acknowledge my point.

Happylittlechick - I swear they are doing it deliberately to push people to pricier bespoke boxes. But it's not on, its marketed as an assortment, a customer should have a reasonable expectation of a broadly even mix!

As if you'd risk the dentist at Christmas by going for the toffee penny Shock

Lockheart · 27/11/2020 20:12

They're not doing it deliberately to get people to shell out for more.

They know which ones are preferred. I imagine there would be less purple ones too as they are popular but I did t count them. They know what they re doing. 😡
