To expect quality street tins to have roughly equal amounts of each sweet?

Allthequalitystreet · 27/11/2020 19:51

I have just opened a 2kg tin and found it had 26 coconut, 25 fudge, 25 toffee penny. 8 green triangle. 8 purple one. 9 orange crunch etc.

To me that's not an acceptable mix in a tin marketed as an assortment with each sweet shown with equal weighting on the side of the tin.

AIBU?

In addition, if you have a new tin yourselves and are willing to count, please post what proportions you've got.

I am sure loads of you will be tempted to post that iabu for liking quality street at all but a) it's that smell of christmas when you open the tin and b) not the point of the thread.

TIA

I read an article a few weeks ago saying the mix would not happen this year - sorry didn’t retain reason why but it was enough for me to decide not to buy them this year

Who gives a stuff about the nutritional value of Quality Street!

There is no nutrition whatsoever therefore there is no need to worry about it. Happy days!

I wish we could get Australian Roses here. The mix would suit me better
Classic Milk - Purple and Silver.
Peppermint Créme Crunch - Green with Silver.
Hazelnut Swirl - Pink with Silver.
Classic Caramel - Light blue with Silver.
Caramel Deluxe - Orange with Brown.
Hazelnut Créme Crisp - Orange with Silver.
Vanilla Nougat - Cream with Brown.
White Raspberry - Silver with Pink.
Turkish Delight - Yellow with Red.
Dark Mocha Nougat - Brown with Silver

Slightly off the subject, have any of you tried the chocolate cherry liqueurs from Aldi. Gorgeous.

MercyBooth · 28/11/2020 01:29

@Lockheart If thats the case how come Quality Street Purely Purple Ones are able to buy (the whole thing looks like a giant purple sweet)

Iamthewombat · 28/11/2020 01:32

Lockheart works in the confectionery biz. That is my guess.

Here is another guess: that the green triangles, the purple one and the orange crunch are scarcer because they contain more chocolate and expensive ingredients (nuts) by weight and are more expensive to make.

If we all want tubs of Quality Street and Roses for £4.50 a go, what can we expect? QS used to be a special Christmas treat in a big tin, and was priced accordingly. Probably the equivalent of £25 today, but nobody wants to pay that any more because we’re all too used to cheap stuff.

Ive seen Tonys Chocolonely bars in Sainsburys for a long while now and never tried them but in the Christmas aisle they have two new Tonys Chocolonely Christmas flavours. dark mint candy cane and milk chocolate gingerbread. Ive bought DH the dark mint one to try as he loves mint Matchmakers. I cant stand mint. Tonys bars are expensive but they are quite thick slabs.

My dear old nana used to only like a soft centre. She could never be bothered working out what chocolate was what from the menu. When you went round at Xmas you'd be offered a Quality Street or a Roses and on opening it you'd find her teeth marks in it where she'd helpfully 'tested them'

Twofurrycatsagain · 28/11/2020 02:08

I've never forgiven them for taking out the gooseberry cream.

CatMuffin · 28/11/2020 09:19

Marks sell good Christmas chocolates, including coffee ones, cherry liqueur, nougat. Not checked this year, but they usually do.

CatMuffin · 28/11/2020 09:20

The purple one tasted nicer in the past. Apparently it used to have brazil nut in it but now has hazlenut

WitchesSpelleas · 28/11/2020 09:33

Slightly off-topic but I remember as a teenager going to a friend's house just after Christmas and being offered a chocolate from their huge selection box. I saw the orange cremes were intact (gone in 60 seconds in our house) and thinking they might be saving the best till last, politely asked if it was OK to take one.

Imagine my joy when my friend told me no-one in their house liked orange cremes, and, glad of the chance to get rid of them, took all of them out and bagged them up for me to take home!

PoloNeckKnickers · 28/11/2020 09:36

Love, love, love the toffee penny and the toffee stick thing with chocolate on.

Viviennemary · 28/11/2020 09:44

I'm obsessed now with coffee creams. I googled them. Fatal. Never heard of Friars chocolates. But they do boxes of them. Not cheap. But think I'll have to try them. And Thorntons.

Wandafishcake · 28/11/2020 09:49

Yanbu
But
The coconuts are my favourite so I’d be happy with your tin !

Oysterbabe · 28/11/2020 09:53

Toffee pennies are hands down the worst sweet in the tin.

Mcnotty · 28/11/2020 09:54

@WitchesSpelleas

The coconut ones and toffee pennies always get left in our house, so that mix would be rubbish for us.
The TOFFEE PENNIES get LEFT at your house?Shock, they’re the first to go here. I can’t believe there are toffee pennies sitting around idly at @WitchesSpelleas house. 😫
Oysterbabe · 28/11/2020 09:56

Strawberry and orange creams are the best. DH hates them. Also he only likes chicken breast whereas I prefer legs. It works out well and probably worth including things like this on your dating profile.

WitchesSpelleas · 28/11/2020 09:57

Don't worry, In past years I've taken them into the office to get used up, @Mcnotty, so they didn't go to waste - but since that won't be an option this year as we're all WFH I will have to look for a different selection!

Madcats · 28/11/2020 11:25

I've not really got the hang of Quality Street since they ditched the chocolate cracknel one in the red wrapper and messed all the other colour wrappers about.

Can anybody recommend a brand/box that doesn't include the cream/fondant? They have to taste chocolatey too.

cologne4711 · 28/11/2020 11:44

@Subordinateclause

There do always seem to be toffee pennies left at the end, but I always assumed that was because no one ate them. I wonder if they're the cheapest to make.
Since they got rid of the luxury toffee, the pennies are about the only ones I like. I thought the strawberry creams were the cheapest to make as there are always millions of those. I've stopped buying Quality Street now, such a waste of £££ (and plastic tubs).
WhoWants2Know · 28/11/2020 11:54

My favourites are the toffee and coconut ones. I don't really like the others.

Any donations cast/offs accepted.

NiceGerbil · 28/11/2020 12:58

Guess in this household is that they put in more of the cheaper heavier ones. Also the more of the cheaper ones sounds likely.

I always thought that sweets were, well. Sweets. And so they don't have to put the red green amber thing. Interested to find out about the regs too from the poster on the know. Link would be fab.

TitilatedOcelot · 28/11/2020 13:07

I misread toffee pennies as toffee penis. Never found one of those in the tin Grin
