To expect quality street tins to have roughly equal amounts of each sweet?

Allthequalitystreet · 27/11/2020 19:51

I have just opened a 2kg tin and found it had 26 coconut, 25 fudge, 25 toffee penny. 8 green triangle. 8 purple one. 9 orange crunch etc.

To me that's not an acceptable mix in a tin marketed as an assortment with each sweet shown with equal weighting on the side of the tin.

AIBU?

In addition, if you have a new tin yourselves and are willing to count, please post what proportions you've got.

I am sure loads of you will be tempted to post that iabu for liking quality street at all but a) it's that smell of christmas when you open the tin and b) not the point of the thread.

TIA

Why don't I ever get 25 TPs?? Mine always have 2 of those and 4799654 hateful purple ones. The tins see me coming.

YesIDoLoveCrisps · 27/11/2020 20:25

Not orange or strawberry creamsShock

This year has been shit enough and now none of my favorite sweets in the tin. I would go fucking mental. There’s a line and it’s been crossed.

Takethewine

Perhaps we need a mnet QS swap shop. I will trade you toffee penny for purples!

It's not about popularity either.

It's just making sure that the nutritional RDA information printed on the tin isn't entirely out of whack by having unbalanced tins. This is why they break it down by the three types and then limit the calorific ones.

It's not a conspiracy or a personal slight.

Money will be at the heart of it.

Maybe coconuts are cheaper to produce.

Why not say that on their response to me and ffs who gives a shit about calorie content in quality street? They are sweets Hmm

@Lockheart

It's always like that, this shouldn't be a surprise to you.
She didn't say she was surprised. She asked if it was a bit bollocks. Which it is.
Holothane · 27/11/2020 20:31

I’d like a tin with toffee finger, fudge, coconut one and caramel.

Joswis · 27/11/2020 20:31

@Singlebutmarried

I’m mostly passed off no one does coffee cremes anymore.
This!

Love toffee penny and fudge. Soft centres or orange make me gag.

Allthequalitystreet · 27/11/2020 20:32

Lockwood I'm just looking at my tin. There's nothing here that distinguishes
nutritionally between 3 types - where have you got that from?

OP posts:
alltoomuchrightnow · 27/11/2020 20:32

I bin the toffee pennies

grassisjeweled · 27/11/2020 20:34

Coconuts are cheaper to produce? What, than pennies?

Heatherjayne1972 · 27/11/2020 20:34

Ahh. It’s Toffee season.
Dentists spend time every January with toffee related mishaps

They still have to adhere to guidelines.

Nutritional information is printed on healthy and unhealthy packaging alike. It doesn't matter that they're sweets.

The reasons for the mix of sweets are well-published, if you want to look:

I would be disppointed.

Give me coffee or fruit creams- orange, strawberry or my favourite- violet creams.

jrb123 · 27/11/2020 20:39

@toomuchrightnow don't bin the toffee pennies - send them to me!

They don't distinguish between the three types nutritionally, but each type will have different average calories. If you eat 5 toffee pennies it's different to eating 5 green triangles.

They can't print everything so they have to use an average for the tin.

By knowing the average calorific content of each type and making sure the tin has approximately 1/3 of each type, they can estimate the average nutrition sufficiently.

They could NOT do this if the tins were truly randomised because you'd get tins with much higher and much lower RDAs.

This is not the same as buying a box of only purple ones for example, where the content is know and nutritional information can be published accurately.

Crankley · 27/11/2020 20:46

They are full of palm oil which makes them taste of shit so I would save your money if I were you.

CallmeAngelina · 27/11/2020 20:47

Every year, our extended family does a stock-take on the Quality Street tins.
Here's ours from last year (some gannets had already started on them before we'd done the count, hence some wrappers being rescued from the bin). Please excuse the carpet, which was badly in need of a hoover.

To expect quality street tins to have roughly equal amounts of each sweet?
MrsTravers · 27/11/2020 20:48

Sounds like my dream tin and would stop DD nabbing all the coconut ones!

YANBU, though - they need to follow Revels' example. Perfect distribution of all,
including the rank coffee cream ones that make the toffee ones all the more enjoyable.

Allthequalitystreet · 27/11/2020 20:48

Lockheart

Thank you - genuinely useful information.

They refer to recommended calorie levels though, wonder what on earth those are. If they are allowed to sell a bespoke tin containing only the higher calorie varieties (they are), if it was a simple as ensuring the RDA etc on tin is reasonable, they could simply change that nutritional reporting to allow for higher proportions of those higher calorie sweets and have roughly even proportions.

I'm sure this was mentioned esr6 in the year as being a possibility. They said it was due to the production lines having to be covid secure and therefore affecting the making and packing process!

Pandemic year and therefore we have to expect some things are going to be different!

Notanothernamechanged101 · 27/11/2020 20:54

@BeneficiaryMadness

Every year we open our various tubs celebration/heroes/quality street, sort all the sweets into rows, from most to least, then tweet the manufacturer to tell them how disappointed we are 😀
What sort of response do you get? @BeneficiaryMadness

Blimey @CallmeAngelina only 3 triangles & loads of creams -so disappointing.
