To not feel like 70 is old

My parents are 70 and 75 and I just don’t see them as elderly is this because they are my parents?

No, its because many 70 year olds live the same life as they did at 50 but with the added benefits of retirement and excellent healthcare. Old = frail to me, and many are not frail until they’re into their 80s

MatildaTheCat · 27/11/2020 17:37

My mum is 80 and I barely see her as old. She really doesn’t look her age although she has slowed down a bit. Most people I know have really become’old’ around their mid eighties.

Brandaris · 27/11/2020 17:39

Perhaps because you are ageing at the same rate as they are? When you’re a child everyone over 20 seems old, because it’s your perception. But if you’re maybe 40 and your parents are 70 it won’t feel like such a difference.

GreekOddess · 27/11/2020 17:40

They aren't elderly. I consider over 60 to be senior but not elderly until over 80.

ChanklyBore · 27/11/2020 17:43

It’s more than 20-30 years longer than my parents got, from my perspective it’s pretty old. Certainly I’d be happy to reach those ages

ZaraW · 27/11/2020 17:43

Depends what health conditions they have and how active they are. My parents are 72 and 75. Their diet has never been healthy and my dad has always been a borderline alcoholic. Their lifestyle has caught up with them. I see them as elderly.

McRibpain · 27/11/2020 17:44

I think 80s is elderly now.

Wbeezer · 27/11/2020 17:49

My Dad is 80 and doesn't seem elderly yet! He's barely changed in 20 years, obviously I'd see the difference in side by side photos but it's not glaring. His mother lived to 100 though so he must have good genes.

Ultimatecougar · 27/11/2020 17:53

70 is old objectively speaking. But if you are genetically lucky, look after yourself and have access to healthcare it doesn't mean infirmity necessarily. Plenty of old people are active.

ComDummings · 27/11/2020 17:54

I suppose it is old really. I think the perception of old changes with health as well. A fit and well 70 year old can seem miles younger than someone of the same age who suffers with ill health.

DappledThings · 27/11/2020 17:57

My parents and PIL range from 68 to 75 and none of them seem old to me.

sandragreen · 27/11/2020 17:58

70 is definitely old, but maybe not elderly

CloudyVanilla · 27/11/2020 17:58

No my mum is 66 and doesn't seem anywhere near elderly. I also work with a lady who is 62 and I just see her as an older adult woman.

I'm mid twenties and when I was younger assumed it was elderly, but people are just people until they are really pretty old!

PolarnOPirate · 27/11/2020 18:02

Yeah grandparents are all between 86 and 90 (still have all 4 of them) and they've only got noticeably old in the past 5 ish years. Dementia, strokes etc starting to creep in. Don't know when they started feeling old though, but from the outside, yeah.
