Worried about smoke from wood burner

We have just had a log burner installed and have a couple of young children. Youngest is 3.
Today the stove started to smoke. We sent the children straight out of the room and opened windows, put on fan etc I’m just worried the smoke could have done them some harm. It was t too much and we went into the room after the smell had cleaned. Just concerned as when I went to check in the smell a couple of times it hurt slightly to breathe in and I now have a headache!
I am a massive worried so may be over reacting!

Who fitted it? Mine was officially commissioned, carbon monoxide alarm and certificate issued, it shouldn’t do that.

As no one seems to have mentioned it.

Kindling on top is the way forward, a few logs in bottom of stove, pile of kindling on top.
Fire lighter above logs but under kindling.

It will heat up quickly and push cold air out of flue and catch the logs.

"we have a small open fire that we burn logs on - maybe one or two evenings at the weekend. We're in a well-spaced suburb - are we being dreadfully ant-social?"

If you live in a smoke control area you could be breaking the law and setting yourself up for a £1000 fine. These tend to cover most towns and cities, including the suburbs.

This government website contains details, and you'll be able to find out if you live in a smoke control area from your local authority website:

www.gov.uk/smoke-control-area-rules

Worth double checking to save yourself some grief and money!
