After more than two years in an Iranian prison, I was starting to doubt that the Australian/British government were going to do anything, especially after their 'quiet diplomacy' statement ages ago which sounded like an excuse tbh. This is great news.

Such good news.
Circumstances make it pretty clear she was being held as a political hostage.

GurpsAgain · 26/11/2020 01:42

Yes, it would seem that was the case, and ultimately it worked. I think there's a fair chance the Iranian government would've kept her inside out of spite however, had the deal been refused.

I was quite surprised to see that it hadn't been discussed much on here. A search showed an AIBU thread with no replies and one in feminism chat, which turned into a bunfight as it seems the OP posted it to scold people about not caring about it. But the few posters that engaged said that the trans issue was more important and that this wasn't a feminist issue. I'd have defo said it was at least a women's rights issue.

But glad it is now resolved. Was hard reading about her being in solitary confinement for so long and being beaten for singing to try and keep her spirits up.

It's a human rights issue for sure.

I hope she is in good enough health to return home asap, and that she can recover from the trauma she's undergone.

I believe two UK-Iranian women are still being held, unfortunately.

GurpsAgain · 26/11/2020 03:01

Yes, I believe there are others. I speculate that having Iranian citizenship might it even more difficult.

Wonderful news. The statement from the Australian government said that they had followed the wishes of her family in using quiet diplomatic channels.

BitOfFun · 26/11/2020 03:28

The Feminism thread is here, and you will see from the surviving comments that it was started by a troll who wanted to smear feminist posters on mumsnet for addressing the trans issue and the attacks by men on women around it.

Nobody told the OP that they should be quiet because they were more interested in the trans topic, or any other, as is blindingly obvious.

I question your motives here, tbh. See if you can reframe that into me telling you to shut up because I'm not interested if it's not about the trans debate, will you? I'm reporting this thread.

I never said people 'told the OP that they should be quiet because they were more interested in the trans topic.' Confused

Please don't misquote me. I said that people said the trans issue was more important which is exactly what the quote below states.

"Instead we are focusing our energies on fighting against a sustained and vicious attack on women's rights by men in our own country."

I have nothing to hide so report away, but please don't derail my thread.

So you've basically just done on here what you're denying, bitoffun. Gives the trans stuff a rest, its not relevant- people still cant bloody help themselves when we're talking about women locked up by repressive regimes.

user1471565182 · 26/11/2020 06:36

and reporting the thread because you dont like the light it shows that thread in. Dont you think this might be a bit more important than that?
